Best in Mid Wales: Finalist
Named one of the best Hipcamps to visit in 2023.

Just five caravans or motorhomes and a maximum of ten tents populate the green fields of Rhos Y Gallt Campsite at any one time. And the nearest neighbours? Well, those are sheep. This is a rural campsite in a couple of farmer’s fields, one of which is bounded by a river that you’re welcome to swim or fish in. It’s not too far off the A-road that takes people from the Midlands to the Welsh coast at Barmouth but there’s no particular reason to stop here. Unless, that is, you fancy camping in peaceful countryside with campfires allowed, dogs welcome and wild swimming on the doorstep.

The main two-acre field offers hardstanding pitches and electric hook-up but if you’re coming with a tent and you can live without power for a day or two, we’d suggest you wander further. A second field borders the river where a wilder kind of camping is allowed. Pitch up riverside and you can enjoy the sight and sound of water flowing by and wildlife visiting. But of course, wild as it seems, this is not wild camping and everything you need is provided including loos, showers and a freezer for your ice blocks in a little facilities block. This is a simple site for campers who can look after themselves. Farmer John calls in once a day to check all is running smoothly and his son may come around to see if you want to hire a fire pit and buy some logs but otherwise you are left to enjoy the place with your camping neighbours – and the sheep.

There’s a handy shop, cafe and pub a couple of miles away and there are footpaths everywhere – including the not insignificant Glyndŵr’s Way National Trail, just a mile away and the 11-mile route around Lake Vyrnwy, a half-hour drive from site. It’s the same distance to the southern edge of Snowdonia National Park with that coast that others are whizzing past Rhos Y Gallt to get to, less than an hour’s drive from here.

Quiet small site in beautiful Mid Wales where you can pitch your tent in the field with electric hook up and shower block with washing up area. Alternatively, walk down to the river meadow for a more wild camping experience, wild swimming and fishing. Village shop and vintage café within 2 miles.

Rhos y Gallt Campsite
Pros: Owner John was very quick in replying to messages and was very friendly and helpful on-site. Brought over an excellent firepit (£5) and a huge crate of firewood (£10) as soon as we arrived. Site is well laid out and facilities are very clean and tidy: 2 x toilets and showers (£1 for 5mins), kettle, freezer, microwave and good recycling area - a fridge would be a useful addition. River is great to explore. Wonderful place for stargazing. Cons: River meadow (bottom field) was a bit too overgrown for us which was a bit disappointing. Not mowed and the sheep aren't grazing it this week so the grass was too long. Sound carries a tiny bit from a distant road - nothing too drastic just a slight annoyance which you soon ignore. On the subject of noise, single sex groups are allowed and this could be policed a little better (quiet time 10 to 8?), as naturally these can be a bit rowdy if you are seeking peace and quiet. Overall definitely recommended and would return - just a tiny tweak here or there for perfection!

Just WOW, Outstanding Campsite ⛺️
Just WOW! What a truly outstanding and beautiful place to camp. We booked for five nights but ended up in the end only staying for three nights due to The extreme winds 50+ . I am single mum with two children and we felt it would be a too much for us all. The site itself is easy to get to and John communicates well before hand. The campsite and land surrounding the campsite is picturesque and really made us all relax. The toilets, showers and kitchen facilities were all kept clean and stocked throughout our stay. We took advantage of the extra fire pit and logs which we really enjoyed using at night to cook on and keep warm in the evenings. John stopped by each day and was very friendly and helpful. 100 % we will be returning again and would recommend to anyone who is looking for a nice peaceful getaway. The pitches on this site are not allocated we felt this was a nice touch as could turn up and choose where you want to pitch up. 5* from us . Thank you John. Sarah Ruby and Oliver

Three night stay
Our family of five loved tent camping on John’s land. Our three boys especially loved the river. We spent as much time as we could playing in the water and fishing. John was very friendly and quick to respond. The facilities were clean and well stocked. We would love to come back again!

Guests to Rhos y Gallt describe the campsite as a little gem of a site - small, quite and tranquil with wonderful sunsets. The site can accommodate up to 5 caravans and 10 tents situated on a level 2 acre site within the beautiful rolling hills of Montgomeryshire in Mid Wales. There are hard standing pitches with electric hook-up as well as grass pitches with and without electric hook-up. There is also a field bordering a river which is used for wild camping - but you'll have to share it with the sheep! The toilet block has a family wet room with shower, toilet, wash hand basin and baby changing unit, a separate toilet, shower and kitchen area with freezer. The site borders a river meadow where visitors can wonder down and take a walk down with the river bank, relax by the water edge, throw a few skimmers, do a spot of fishing or even go wild water swimming (at your own risk!). Well behaved dogs are welcome (maximum 2 per unit). We were delighted to receive a nomination for The Camping and Caravanning Club Best Hideaway Site in 2021 and grateful to our wonderful guests for the nomination.
Nearby attractions

There’s great walking straight from site and for more of a hike, you can join Glyndŵr’s Way National Trail, about a mile away. For more walking as well as horse riding and mountain biking, the Dyfnant Forest is five miles away and Lake Vyrnwy is 11 miles away where there’s also birdwatching at the RSPB reserve and watersports too. The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway and Powis Castle offer other places to explore on days out nearby. Snowdonia National Park’s southern edge is only a half-hour drive away with Cadair Idris, Wales’ second highest peak, a popular peak to summit. Barmouth on the Welsh coast is just under an hour’s drive.

Food and drink

The closest place for a meal or drink out is the Cann Office (01938 820202) a couple of miles down the road. Just a little further is Cwpan Pinc, the village shop, post office and cafe.
