Simple, eco-friendly camping with epic views at the foot of a famed Welsh mountain range

Cwmffrwd Farm's, Pengenffordd off-grid, pop-up site is a back-to-nature retreat for those looking for simple camping in stunning surroundings. Nestled within 22 acres of wildflower meadows, the spacious pitches for campers and glampers alike make visitors feel like they've found a secret spot in South Wales - tucked away amid towering mountains in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Exemplified by the site's focus on maintaining the natural biodiversity of their surroundings, hosts James and Pridie are advocates of outdoor life and positive environmental change, with James working in the energy and environment sector and Pridie being both a survival instructor and professional outdoor performance storyteller.

The secluded nature of Cwmffrwd Farm ensures guests' privacy compared to other, more densely populated sites, along with keeping this beautiful land unspoiled. This is reflected in the simple amenities, with composting loos in the meadows and a washroom and flushing toilet located in the 'The Byre', with hot water and an electric shower. Please note that no vehicles are allowed on the meadows to protect the ground and the people running wild and free! Cars park in the meadow entrance and campervan pitches are all located along the bottom of both camping meadows. Wheelbarrows are provided for moving kit.

The amenities may be basic here, but they're situated in a site owned by people who know a great outdoor spot with a view when they see one. Camping pitches are spaciously spread out across the meadows and the highest one has a gate that opens out onto the Waun Fach mountain range (with the highest peak of south-eastern Wales' Black Mountains at 811m.) Select your pitch, plant your tent / park your campervan, and explore your surroundings with minimal fuss. For glamping, choose between the two five-metre bell tents, the four-metre bell tent or the extra special 4m bell with linen and stove. The bell tents have the meadow all to themselves with a lovely babbling brook running down the mountain beside it.

Your mountainous surroundings provide ample opportunities for lengthy rambles and hikes, while guests should ditch their phones (there's no WiFi here, allowing a firm disconnect from modern life) and replace them with books from the site's little outdoor library, which also contains charts to help you identify the resident wildlife. You and the kids can also enjoy a variety of workshops run throughout the year that feature folklore, folktales, bushcraft and wilderness skills - see extras and website for dates. Beautiful rural campsite

My family and I loved camping on Pridie’s land, the views were stunning and campsite was very peaceful. There was lots to do in the area, we enjoyed exploring the local towns and nearby countryside.

A stay you won’t regret

We absolutely loved our stay at pridie’s campsite. The pitches have the most amazing view, the setting was just breathtaking. Purdue made us feel very at home and our toddler loved walking the mown paths through the high grass. The starry sky at night is spectacular and we loved getting a visit every night from the hedgehog we befriended and put out walnuts for. Location is also 10/10, crickhowell is the loveliest town with the nicest people (don’t skip the courthall cafe) and it’s only 25 min to abergavenny and hay on wye. Also highly recommend the waterfall hikes. We will come back for sure, can’t say enough good things about it basically…

Lower Meadow - Van/Bell/Roof Tent

Lovely host, very welcoming and allowed us to choose our own pitch. The compost toilets were surprisingly ok not even my daughter minded this new experience, a lovely little gem. It can be tricky to find and there is no signal so have everything already downloaded before you travel, its an old fashioned map situation.

Peaceful and well located

Lovely location close to an A road, pitches nicely spaced out and it was a beautiful view from our pitch. Pridie was very welcoming on our arrival which is exactly what we needed after a long car journey. Facilities were good, nice hot shower and flushable toilet (if you are not brave enough for the compost ones). Would stay again 😃

Camping with a stunning view

We loved our stay on Cwmffrwd Farm. Pridie gave us a warm welcome and got us settled in. Pitches are in a very big field, so you have space and are not on top of other campers. Beautiful view and lots and stunning walks nearby. We also recommend the workshops they organise. We did a couple - they are great fun and we learned a lot. Thanks Pridie! We’ll be back!

Free spirits (or those who need to free their spirits a little…), this is the place for you! Cwmffrwd Farm is a back-to-nature paradise if you are looking for a very special camping holiday in truly beautiful surroundings. Nestled within twenty-two acres of wildflower meadows on the south-west facing slopes of the Black Mountains range, you'll feel like you've found a secret spot in South Wales. Described as a 'spectacularly scenic and peaceful Powys site' in the Brecon Beacons National Park, Cwmffrwd Farm is a place where you really can reconnect with nature, with each tent and van pitch mown into the swaying wildflower meadow grasses (and each four acre meadow being limited to a small number of individual pitches, with plenty of wild meadow grass and mountain between every pitch), big beautiful trees to climb and a babbling stream to paddle and build dams in. All pitches have a steel wheel fire pit and wood boxes are available for £10 cash only. Parking is on entry to the campsite and wheelbarrows are provided to move kit :) Protecting and supporting the natural biodiversity is a priority here, as well as preserving a sense of wilderness. To achieve this, everything is kept very simple and traditional (one flushing toilet / one shower / one washing up area / three compost toilets). Guests are asked to take their rubbish home to recycle. Further info: We are open between May and September, but calls or emails about staying outside of those times are very welcome. Give us a shout if we look booked up as we always keep back a few pitches for last minute campers :) For tent and vans, check in is between 2pm and 9pm/dusk on the day of arrival and check out is by midday. For bell tents and The Hayloft, check in is 4pm and check out is 10am. The meadows are vehicle free, so all campsite parking is on entry to the first meadow. Vans can drive to their pitches along their own lane through the grass. Tent and van pitches are spaciously spread out on levelled circular mown areas across the wildflower meadows and van pitches are along the bottom of all the meadows. Guests select their tent and van pitches in the camping meadows on arrival (the size of the levelled area and the view varies at each). There is space for one medium size tent (4/6 person) per pitch...but guests have also happily fitted up to 8 person tents on some of our pitches with the sleeping area on the levelled area and the rest of the tent on the surrounding mown pitch area. Bell tents are tucked up in the highest meadow with a babbling brook running just beside them, and our beautiful fully furnished 17th Century Hayloft is located at the heart of the farm and sleeps up to six people. Please be aware that entry to the camping fields is narrow (through a normal size field gate) which is why we ask for campervans to be 5m or less in length. Mountainous surroundings provide ample opportunities for lengthy rambles and hikes. Private story walking are available to book with Pridie, and it's worth keeping an eye on the events page to see if she is running her popular Folklore and Foraging Walks, Family Bushcraft sessions and Adult Bushcraft workshops when you stay :) For campers that want to be right next to their neighbour, it's important to know that each pitch is levelled into the mountain slope and will only accommodate one tent. Every pitch is surrounded by wildflowers and grasses that we want to protect from being compressed, so no more than one tent is allowed per tent pitch. The van pitches are slightly larger and will accommodate one van + tent or two tents. It's a good idea to take a look at the map in the photos section and watch the video on our website (just search thewildofthewords) to see what we mean :) We're really quite a small and quiet campsite, so you'll never be far from your friends. It's only ever a hop, skip and a jump through the long grass and flowers when you want to visit a neighbouring pitch to watch the stars from their fire. There is no additional charge for pets, pup tent, gazebo or awning. Be ready to really switch off! The farm doesn't have Wi-Fi. Instead, indulge in some stunning walks, enjoy rummaging around in the little outdoor library for books and charts to help you identify the resident birds and mini beasts, or go for a paddle in the stream and see if you can spot any creatures in the alder, willow, hazel and hawthorn that thrive across the site. Along with the seclusion of each individual pitch, the farm feels like it is tucked away too. It’s 12 minutes drive to picturesque Crickhowell (and a superb wild swimming spot), and 25 minutes to celebrated book town Hay-on-Wye and bustling market town Brecon. It’s best to stock up on food before you arrive, or shop at local supermarkets in Brecon, Abergavenny or the high street in Crickhowell.

Campers can embark on picturesque travels straight from their tent, with the site being within reach of Waun Fach, an open-access mountain with the highest summit of southeast Wales' Black Mountains. The gorgeous town of Crickhowell is a 15-minute drive away from the site, providing you with an array of shops to visit in this small Usk Valley community. In the surrounding area, the site resides in the heart of Brecon Beacons National Park, offering scenic walks through the stunning countryside. Enjoy the Brecon Promenade, a grade 2 walk along the river Usk, or look across the lakes and ponds as part of the Craig-y-nos route. Also tucked away in this National Park is the Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (01874 658272), an award-winning indoor and outdoor centre with horse riding, an indoor climbing centre, and pony trekking trips. For a night out with the family, Theatr Brycheiniog (01874 611622) is a little under 30 minutes away, a modern theatre and community venue, with a variety of shows from ballet through to comedy clubs.

Food and drink

The Farmers Arms (01874 202132) is around a 5-minute drive from the site, located in the village of Cwmdu and serving pub classics and a delicious Sunday lunch. Nantyfinn Cider Mill Inn (01873 810775) is a 10-minute drive, with this stylishly rustic pub serving a traditional Welsh menu. For those with an adventurous palate, the New Gurkha Inn (01874 711581) is a little under six miles away and serves authentic Nepalese and Gurkha cuisine, with a specialised chef blending Indian and Chinese cuisine. Meanwhile, for those looking for an afternoon bite and a coffee, the Walnut Tree (01874 730358) is a riverside cafe and bar a 20-minute drive away, letting you enjoy fish and chips while overlooking the water.
