Pitches and tiny home glamping on a cider farm in Herefordshire

The Cider Shack at Penylan Farm is a tiny home that’s romantic, rustic, cool and—as seen on TV. This bolthole for two in Herefordshire featured on the BBC’s My Unique B&B so it may well seem familiar. But whether you watched the programme or not, it doesn’t take long to work out that this cabin sits in a truly lovely spot on the English-Welsh border. The shack, along with a handful of pitches for caravans and motorhomes, is located on a cider farm between the Wye Valley and The Black Mountains, which are part of the Brecon Beacons. They are also part of the view you’ll be drinking in while you’re here—along with a made-on-site cider.

On arrival, The Cider Shack looks as rustic as its name suggests. It’s clad in a patchwork of corrugated tin, and positioned under an old oak tree in a corner of the farm. But follow the stepping stones into its sheltered courtyard garden and you’ll find that things are not quite as they seem. This is a “shack” with outdoor space which includes a bath, an under-the-stars cinema, and a fire pit in the middle. It’s all thoughtfully done with plenty of reclaimed materials so it doesn’t feel out of place. It’s lovely, low key luxury and the theme carries on indoors. There’s the Cider Shack itself; a bedroom and living space that’s warmed by a log burner, and a curved-roof facilities cabin. There you’ll find a private compost loo, hot shower, and an equipped kitchen.

Over at the campsite, pitches are reserved for members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club. Join up, book in and you can enjoy the same lovely location in your own accommodation-on-wheels, with access to separate facilities in an outbuilding; a flushing loo and a hot-water shower.

The views, the loos, and the cider mean you could stay on the farm for the duration of your holiday but there’s plenty to drag you away. Those peaks in the distance, for example, or the River Wye and all its adventures. But much closer than that, just a stumble away in fact, is your hosts’ Ty Gwyn cider shop and bar. This on-the-farm enterprise is typical of the area; Herefordshire’s Golden Valley where good food and great walks make the most of the countryside. What more do you need for a weekend away?

Idyllic & Beautiful
Wow !! What an amazing place this is.. A real gem of a find. Stayed for only one night in our campervan as we are getting used to our new VW camper and this is less than 1hr from Cardiff where we live. But we could stay here for days ... The booking process was excellent (via Hipcamp) and the communication with the host (Laura) was excellent. Upon arrival we were met by Laura and given free range to look around the grounds, Glamping and cider shop. So lovely, welcoming and friendly. Such a lovely welcome. Loved the dogs also, especially scrumpy (great name for a cider farm dog) Parked the camper up with stunning views and perfect facilities. Bottle of wine and a bbq under the stars. Perfect. This place is truely wonderful and we'll definitely be back with friends, and recommend it to everyone. Love, love & love it.

Peace and quiet with fab views
Where do we start.. 🤔.. we are here for 4 nights. .. If you want peace come here… if you want amazing views.. come here.. if you want to walk come here if you want to chill come here.. and of course if you want to try scrumptious cider definitely come here!! Note open Wednesday to Sunday but you can buy from Laura on the days they are closed if you ask. Laura is so helpful and welcoming.and has always been on hand if needed. A busy bee with her lovely family, cider farm and 2 holiday cottages but always has time for her customers. The site is for 4 van pitches and each offer a hard standing. (Stones)Little shade so you would need your own awning but we have had a good breeze also. Clean facilities and a washing up area on site, with water and a grey water combined chemical disposal point. One pitch with a grass pitch for a caravan/motorhome and awning. Pubs and restaurants close by with walks from the site and a walk to buy ice cream 😃. Just book it and enjoy 😃👍 Highly recommended if you hadn’t noticed 😃

Nestled between the black mountains and the Wye Valley, we have magnificent views in every direction. We are a small, friendly, family run business and live on site. Alex runs the award winning cidery, with licenced bar and Laura runs the two holiday lets. Many great places to dine and explore nearby.
Nearby attractions

Penylan Farm is almost on the border between England and Wales, close to the village of Ewyas Harold. It’s an area known as Herefordshire’s Golden Valley – lovely countryside that’s great for walking and Laura and Alex have OS Maps, walking boots and lots of suggestions. Ewyas Valley Common is a local favourite spot. You can even take a llama for a walk up there, courtesy of Golden Valley Llamas. For a wander into the Black Mountains, you don’t have to drive far either. The 596-metre peak of Sugar Loaf Mountain provides a three-hour hike that’s not too challenging and offers great views and there are plenty more to choose from within the Brecon Beacons National Park. Abergavenny, 12 miles from site, is a good place to start out on numerous adventures. As well as walking, there’s cycling and boat rides along the Abergavenny-Brecon Canal. You can also get on the water, on the River Wye, at Symonds Yat for kayaking and canoeing (about 20 miles from site). The book town of Hay-on-Wye is 20 miles in the other direction up the river. Oldfield Forge, six miles away, makes for a creative and fun day out too; you can book in to make your own axehead, dagger or even wedding rings.

Food and drink

You don’t need to go far for a good local tipple as your hosts at Penylan Farm also make Ty Gwyn cider right here on the farm. You can order it in advance (along with breakfast hampers, Prosecco or Champagne) or head to the tap room and shop while you're here. And cider is not the only fresh-from-the-farm produce available nearby. About a mile up the road is Rowlestone Farm Ice Cream – where the little ice cream parlour and shop has a huge variety of flavours on sale as well as coffees, paninis and cakes. For lunch or dinner at the pub, head for Ewyas Harold (just over a mile away) where you can choose from The Temple Bar and The Dog Inn, both recommended and within walking distance. There’s also a fish and chip shop in the village as well as a village store and butcher, if you want to cook for yourself. The Bridge Inn at Kentchurch (just over two miles away) is a good spot for riverside dining with a pizza oven and deck overlooking the water and The Kilpeck Inn is a traditional Herefordshire country Inn that’s not too far from site (five miles).
