Care-free Welsh camping with acres of space, excellent walks and a beautiful woodland on the doorstep

It’s very easy to get lost at Top of the Woods Campsite. Not in the literal sense – owners Soo and Jon give you a map on arrival – but lost in the more airy-fairy, do as you care-y sort of way. The atmosphere is one so laid back it’s almost horizontal, the flittering of bird and wildlife enlivens every acre, and the light, white-grey wisps of campfire smoke give that essential campsite feel that holiday parks just can’t contend with. No, there’s something lose-yourself special at Top of the Woods.

All the same, when we talk in the literal, this is a sizeable patch of land. Spread over 27 acres, campers here aren’t exactly short of space. And, as if to add to it all, where the corner of the site feathers into a mature flank of oak trees, the gargantuan Ffynone Wood begins - a vast 325 acres of forest - much of which is now a designated SSSI.

The varied accommodation comprises of a large camping meadow (with just 15 pitch-where-you-want spots), 4 fully-furnished nature domes (complete with log burners), 4 luxury safari lodges and 9 pioneer camps. There are no electrical hook-ups which means the campsite has a rustic, traditional atmosphere, something accentuated by the fact cars are parked by the entrance with wheelbarrows for trucking in your gear.

When you pop your head through the tent flaps, its not long before you find a neighbour – usually of the non-human kind. The woods have the largest resident badger population in West Wales, rabbits work like natural hedge trimmers, nuzzling along the meadow edges and, if your particularly lucky, otters can sometimes be spotted slipping into Afon Dulas, a charmingly peaceful stream that runs along the southern edge of the site.

Once part of the huge Ffynone Estate, which was split up in the late 50s, the campsite is located on quaint Penralt Farm. The 18th-century farmstead still has chickens scratching around outside and three kunekune pigs that grey the line between pet and farm-animal. Within the Georgian farm sheds, house martins too and fro by day, while rare breed of bat (the farm hosts 7 of the UK's 17 bat species) also nest within the eves. Slightly separate from the other farm buildings, a Dutch Barn has been converted for camper's use as a covered picnic area. It has tables, hammocks and a stash of games for anyone to use – a handy place to mull over the mapped out walking route that leads you into the trees to the enchantingly named ‘secret waterfall’.

In all, Top of the Woods has an almost fictional feel; a countryside atmosphere embodied in books and paintings of the past. Like a care-free kid from the famous five you can delve into the woods in search of adventure or play cricket in the meadows and picnic in the sun. The Pembrokeshire location may often be the reason campers first arrive – a valuable attraction in itself – but by the time they leave many find they’ve hardly left the campsite at all, such is its size, shape and sheer space that's there to get lost in!

Meadow Camping Pitch
The best mini getaway
Had an absolutely amazing time, perfect for dog loves and the kids can just go wild. The owners really go above and beyond with everything they do and they saved us when we forgot sleeping bags. 100% recommend the pizza night. Everyone is so friendly, breath of fresh air compared to London

1 - Bluebell Dome
We spent 4 nights at top of the woods. I have to say every aspect of our stay was absolutely first rate. The land is set a beautiful Welsh valley but not too far away from Cardigan. We stayed in a beautiful geodesic dome style tent, with a covered kitchen, wood burner, and actual beds. It was somehow out in the wilderness and yet all the comforts of home. We made loads of memories and came home feeling relaxed and refreshed. Soo and Jon were excellent hosts and made me and my family feel right at home. Top of the woods is a definite must.

Wonderful campsite
This was one of the loveliest campsites we’ve ever been to, run with so much care and attention to detail by Soo and Jonny. Their green credentials are really impressive, the campsite is absolutely beautiful, the facilities are so clean and everyone is incredibly friendly. Pizza nights are wonderful social occasions with everyone getting together in the Dutch barn. The site is so family friendly it’s almost like being part of one big family, with all the children playing together in the hay barn, and all the adults comparing notes about the best beaches or places to eat in Cardigan. Cardigan is a lovely town with a brilliant butcher and lots of nice independent shops. We had such a fabulous time and we were sorry to leave and go elsewhere. If you are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the stars, they are truly a sight to behold!

Meadow Camping Pitch
A Welsh hidden gem
Lovely family feel to this beautiful hidden gem! Pizza oven night and then a barn cinema was a highlight! They even put the euros England final on for us on the Sunday. We had the stunning breakfast in soo’s shed too and it was perfect. Super clean toilets and showers. Children particularly enjoyed feeding the pigs. Thank you for a gorgeous stay, would highly recommend.

Places like Penrallt Farm are a rare and special thing in today's world. Penrallt loosely translates from the Welsh as "top of the woods", and is our 27 acre Georgian farm in the stunning unspoilt Teifi Valley in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. Our mission is to inspire through nature and to be the best loved eco-holiday business in Wales!  Everything we do is inspired by creating something which is sustainable, enriching and unique.
Nearby attractions
The campsite sometimes lays on special events, like guided wildlife walks, through the adjoining 325-acre Ffynone Wood and maps are also provided on your arrival with local routes, including Soo’s Secret Waterfall Trail. The site is directly traversed by a bridleway that leads immediately into the woods. Further afield, nearby attractions include fantastic Cardigan Castle (01239 615131), opened to the public in April 2015 after a massive 12 year restoration project, and The Welsh Wildlife Centre, in the Teifi Marsh Nature Reserve. There's also very easy access to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, the Preseli Hills and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with a particular highlight being the Teifi gorge, fabulous for kayaking and canoeing.
Food and drink
Top of the Woods offers guests hot farmhouse breakfasts at weekends and hosted dinners evenings, all prepared with high quality local produce.  They also host pop up restaurants such as wood fired pizzas during school holidays. A mobile fishmonger also visits twice weekly, selling the freshest Welsh seafood. Pub-wise there are two locals. The Nags Head (01239 841200) at Abercych offers seasonal menus, all cooked in house by their chef using the best Welsh ingredients. The Fynnone Arms in Newchapel (01239 841800) does excellent Sunday lunches and specialises in dairy free, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan menu options.
