A little shepherd’s hut with big views on a smallholding in north Wales

The Shepherd’s Hut at Haftoy Boeth is situated on a smallholding between the Clwydian Hills and Bannau Brycheiniog (Snowdonia) National Park. But we wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t visit either during a stay here. Once you clap eyes on the view, you might find it hard to leave. This shepherd’s hut for two is situated in a little paddock with big views and if you tire of gazing out at the breathtaking rolling farmland there’s usually something in the foreground to keep you amused. You might spot a farm cat stalking through the long grass of the surrounding meadow, a peacock getting ready to put on a display or, perhaps, an alpaca grazing.

It seems there’s always something going on at Hafoty Boeth but it’s a low level of activity – for us glampers at least. While host Carol is always busy keeping everything running smoothly, the pace of life for visitors is relaxed. The lack of WiFi helps keep attention on more wholesome things – like reading books, watching red kites flying overhead, and wondering what to cook on the campfire for dinner. Mind you, campfire cooking isn’t a necessity here. Your shepherd’s hut is well equipped with enough to make simple meals. In fact, the whole thing is well set up self catering stays. You have a flushing toilet and hot water shower. It’s even got underfloor heating. The homely effect is enhanced by warm-toned timber cladding on the walls, a pot-bellied stove, and decor that’s appropriately themed. And for those that want it there’s a TV too – handy on rainy or blustery nights.

For the most part though, we think you’ll be outside. After all, there’s that view to enjoy. Plus, if you do manage to tear yourself away, all the pleasures of North Wales await. Ten minutes in the car takes you into the Clwydian Hills and half an hour gets you into Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. Choose either to scale mountains, ride white water or simply sightsee in areas of natural beauty that’ll take more of your breath away.

While staying at our shepherd’s hut in the summertime guests can enjoy outdoor living. There is a fire pit / BBQ, picnic table and comfortable outdoor egg chairs to relax in. Guests are welcome to enjoy our land and visit our animals as long as they observe the country rules regarding the closing of gates and that they always respect our livestock. We have a standing stone circle where guests can sit and watch the sun set with a glass of wine.In wintertime, guests can cosy up inside the shepherd’s hut and relax in the warmth of the underfloor heating and the pot bellied stove, or wrap up warm and venture out. There is much to do in North Wales at any time of the year. We are always happy to make suggestions as to what might be of interest to our visitors or of course they can search on line. They will be spoilt for choice!

The Shepherd’s Hut at Hafoty Boeth
Great hut on the hill
Fantastic little spot overlooking the valley. Everything you need and all clean, organised and working. Don and Carol couldn’t be more helpful. This was a great last minute find when visiting the area. Leyland arms pub up the road had a great food as well.

Hafoty Boeth is situated in the heart of North Wales, surrounded by wonderful mountain views. We have twenty acres of land on which we keep alpacas, llamas, sheep, horses and a variety of birds; geese, swans, peacocks, guinea fowl, hens. There is much to enjoy in the region. Mountain climbing in Snowdonia, walks around our many lakes as well as the beaches of the Welsh coastline. There are many very individual towns and villages and the Roman city of Chester is within easy driving distance with its international cuisine and nightlife.
Nearby attractions

The Shepherd’s Hut at Hafoty Boeth is not far off the A494 which provides a quick route to Corwen (six miles), a town on the edge of the Clwydian Range, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are plenty of places to walk there with the 549-metre summit of Moel Morfydd one of the more challenging routes nearby. Further into the hills is the pretty town of Llangollen (16 miles) where you can join Offa’s Dyke Path, go paddleboarding on the Langollen canal, jump aboard a heritage train or even cross the Pontcysyllte Aquaduct on a canal boat. In the other direction from site, the edge of Bannau Brycheiniog (Snowdonia) National Park is 20 miles away with plenty more walking, mountain biking and other adventurous activities on offer. Snowdon itself is about an hour’s drive away. It takes about the same time to reach the coast of North Wales at Colwyn Bay (30 miles).

Food and drink

The closest pub is The Leyland Arms (two miles) another is the community-owned Glan Llyn Inn (three miles), both have menus of good pub food. The Glan Llyn is also a community shop if you need to pick up a few supplies for cooking back on site. Alternatively head into Corwen (six miles) where there’s a grocery shop as well as cafes and two pubs in its high street.
