Glamping on a former farm and working mill with a private lake, plenty of space to explore and stunning views across the Welsh countryside

Planning a glamping site may seem simple at first – buy some accommodation, fill it with the most luxurious items you can find and install some plush facilities – but the reality of blending these comforts with the back-to-nature camping ethos is easier said than done. How refreshing it is, then, to find a site as subtly sublime as Sloeberry Farm in West Wales – a place where glamping is done right.

The first thing that strikes you about the place when you arrive is the sheer space of it all. The buttercup-dotted meadows and naturally irregular lines of mature trees seem to have been left to their own devices. Bushes bulge and tiny birds flitter along the hedge lines. For children, the exploration opportunities are endless.

The accommodation, meanwhile, seems to fit within the space just as a harmoniously as a herd of cows might have done some years ago. There are a couple of timber cabins and four ginormous canvas lodges, built of wood and a forest-green canvas that camouflages them among the surroundings. Although the accommodation, with private facilities and hot tubs, is comfortably and undeniably glamping, it retains the rustic vibe of a good old-fashioned farm campsite with ample space to roam. Little wonder then that Sloeberry Farm has been awarded the prestigious Gold Award by Visit Wales.

Each of the cabins and lodges features comfy made-up beds, a fully-equipped kitchen, old-style lanterns and a log-burning stove. And outside every one has a private wood-fired hot tub, picnic table, barbecue and fire pit. Crucially each has its own facilities too — en suite for the lodges which can sleep up to six and just out back of the cabins which cater to families of up to four.

From the farm you can join local lanes and footpaths heading down to the coast – it's about a three-mile walk all the way down to Aberporth beach. Or you can drive there and enjoy a walk along the coastal path instead. The choice is yours but when you stay at Sloeberry Farm you’re certainly starting in the right place!

Otter Lodge with wood fired hot tub
Glazing but camping.
We loved the canvas Lodge and the hot tub. It was clean, amenities were excellent and no electricity was great as the kids had to plan out their screen time. Loved that we could have the dog with us too! Beautiful area and lots to do.

Badger Lodge with wood fired hot tub
Stayed in Badger Safari lodge, which was excellent. The lodges are all spread out to allow each family/group to enjoy themselves whilst having plenty of privacy. Log fired hot tub is excellent to wind down and relax after a day walking along the local cliff tops. Beds were really comfy, and the log burner and Chesterfield sofa were great for a cosy autumn night. Accommodation is well stocked with all the essentials and owners are really pleased to help and offer help or recommendations of places to visit. Will definitely book another stay!

Badger Lodge with wood fired hot tub
We enjoyed our late summer stay in Badger Lodge, the wood burning stove ensured that we were warm when the temperature dropped in the evening. Watching the moon rise while lounging in the hot tub was perfect. The lodge is situated in lovely surroundings and has everything required for a pleasant stay. My only suggestion is that perhaps a teapot would be a nice addition!

Otter Lodge with wood fired hot tub
2nd stay at the farm, and again just perfect. Tent clean and fresh on arrival, 5 minute check in process. Hosts friendly and accommodating requested more logs and there with 10 minutes. Beautiful quiet surroundings can't wait to return thank you

Owl Lodge with wood fired hot tub
Our safari tent was furnished to a very high standard throughout. Plenty of hot water for showers and dishes and plenty of light provided by solar powered lamps - not very bright but we didn't pick a secluded spot in the country to sit indoors with bright lights on! Wood fire hot tub takes a while to heat up but be careful not to overstock it with wood as you can end up with a tub that's too hot! Ours was still plenty warm enough to use again the following morning. You do get through the wood as you want it for hot tub, log burner and firepit but the prices charged by the site are quite reasonable really (roughly the same as buying from a supermarket or garage). Lots of wildlife about including various birds and bats and I caught badger, fox and polecat (plus lots of rabbits) on my trail cam (an added reason to keep dogs on leads on the site!). It was far from the cheapest getaway we've had but I can't fault the location, facilities or quality of the tents / lodges. We'll cretainly be considering returning soon. Thanks all at Sloeberry Farm.

Owl Lodge with wood fired hot tub
Had a wonderful time at this beautiful and secluded farm. The setting is absolutely perfect and the peace and quiet after the last 18 months were exactly what we all needed. The tent was wonderful and so luxurious - and it had absolutely everything we needed - even a flushing toilet and a hot shower - the water pressure was spot on too! I think we took up every single one of the hosts food and activity recommendations. Highly recommend.

Coastal glamping at Sloeberry Farm, recently awarded Gold Glamping the highest possible by VisitWales as part of the Welsh Government Quality Assured Glamping Scheme. The farm is located close to Aberporth Beach near Cardigan in West Wales. The farm was founded in the early 1800s making use of the natural spring to power a mill and dairy. It sits in a sheltered spot with stunning views across the countryside and is a short drive to many local sandy beaches and coves. Sloeberry Farm Lodges and Cabins all with private facilities are located in 13 acres of pasture & woods, only 3 miles from the fishing village and stunning beaches of Aberporth and a short drive from the historic town of Cardigan. As we only have four lodges and in a different meadow a couple of cabins , peace, quiet and privacy have always been an integral part of a stay here at Sloeberry Farm. The canvas lodges sleep up to six people (max 3 adults) in a king bed, bunk beds, and a king-size cabin bed (note Owl Lodge sleeps up to eight (max 3 adults) in a king bed, king cabin bed and 4 single beds on a mezzanine floor). They're equipped with leather sofas, wood burners, dining tables and fully equipped kitchens. Each has a private shower room and en-suite washroom with basin and flushing toilet. Outside, each lodge has a picnic table, a private wood-fired hot tub, a firepit and a separate BBQ. Cabins are equipped with wood burners, dining tables and fully equipped kitchens, with a BBQ/firepit, picnic table and private wood fired hot tub outside . In the bedroom, there is a king-sized bed and in a separate nook bunk beds to comfortably sleep a family of four. Behind each cabin there are huts created by a local craftsman housing a private toilet and hot showers. Sloeberry Farm is perfect for families and couples looking for a quiet relaxing break. Tents, campervans, caravans, large groups, stags and hens cannot be accommodated. If you can't find the dates you are looking for please check SloeberryFarm.com or contact us.
Nearby attractions

Lonely Planet recently voted Cardigan Bay "the best place to be in the world right now" and it certainly fits the bill with it's mix of fantastic beaches and coastal villages, yet still retaining a relatively uncrowded feel, especially out of peak season. Cliff walks on the coastal path, sandy bays and National Trust-owned beaches are the highlights. By car, the town of Cardigan is not far away, formed around a Norman castle which is open to the public and boasts a great café and frequent outdoor events. Nearby Cilgerran Castle (01239 621339) still welcomes visitors – its two massive drum towers dominate the surroundings. North, picture perfect New Quay has a cobbled stone harbour – with plenty of cafés and fantastic chippies, it's a great place to enjoy the views and spot the Cardigan Bay dolphins.

Food and drink

The nearest pub, the Penllwyndu Inn (01239 682533), is an easy mile and a half walk away – don’t be put off by the hangman's noose sign! There are plenty of other places to eat and drink within within easy striking distance but the nearest are either in Cardigan (five miles) or Aberporth (three miles). The former has plenty of choice, plus a supermarket for supplies, while the latter is slightly smaller but has a great fish and chip shop (01239 811003) next door to The Ship Inn (01239 810822), both of which have excellent views of the beach.
