Safari tents among acres of foliage and open spaces that young explorers will adore

The folds of the landscape around Pant Yr Hwch Farm – home of Canvas & Campfires – seem ready made for glamping. A stream bubbles down one side of the small holding’s 11 acres, feeding its way into the River Grannell and also filling the small pond, while the slopes and undulation of the land creates a site of several natural tiers. At the top is the early 19th-century farmhouse, beautifully restored inside and out, and an old stone barn which now serves as a holiday cottage. Then a slope breaks away, rolling down to the pond and an area of open meadow space where the new safari tents are found. For glampers with children the place is a boon. Look for birdlife in the giant, old oaks, roly-poly down the meadow slopes or take your wellies for a wander by the stream. For young explorers, you can’t go wrong.

The glamping side of things consists of just five safari tents, each sleeping up to six people and facing out from the hill to the opposing side of the Teifi valley, a mirror of woodland and hedge-lined fields. Inside they’re thoroughly well kitted out. There are two bedrooms – a master room with a king sized bed and a twin room with singles – while the remaining two campers will find their snug night den inside a cupboard in the living area. Open the doors and a double bed is hidden away. Sleeping in there is an adventure in itself. The kitchen is well stocked – crockery, cutlery and utensils are all provided – and there’s an excellent porch out front for dining on sunny days. All the safari tents have en-suite flushing loos too – so no dewy feet during the morning dash to the lav – while the Seren safari tent even has its own wood-fired hot tub.

Venture beyond the cocoon of the valley, past the sheep and down the narrow country lanes, and the historic market town of Lampeter is a five-minute drive away. A cluster of independent shops and small cafés make it a pleasant little spot to explore, and the university there provides some real vibrancy to what might otherwise be a sleepy spot. In the opposite direction, meanwhile, it’s a mere 15 minutes to the beaches of the west coast and the pretty, Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron. A patchwork of colourful houses line the main quay, overlooking the dinghies as they bob between the harbour walls, and there are number of delightfully old fashioned pubs to be found. It's also a nice place to stock up on chocolate and marshmallows for your evening back at camp. After all, you can't stay at a site called Canvas & Campfires without an evening toasting marshmallows!

Seren - The Hot Tub Tent
Amazing!!
We absolutely loved our stay!! Made to feel so welcome from the moment we arrived with lots of little touches that make the difference. Help with taking our things to the pitch, our hot tub being heated up ready for us to get straight in and the free range eggs they gave us. One of the best glamping experiences we've had. Tent was spotless and nothing would have been to much trouble. Thanks for a great stay.

We arrived for our 6 night break and from the start the hospitality from Ellie and Dan was fabulous, nothing was too much. They kept us stocked up with firewood daily. There were 9 of us plus 3 dogs staying in the two disabled access tents and we were completely wowed by the standard and cleanliness of the tents. Each tent was very comfortable and had lots of space. The surrounding area was beautiful and though we did not venture out that much (due to the weather) staying onsite playing games and socialising with our extended families that we have not seen since January was all we needed. I would definitely recommend staying here and we will return.

We arrived on Monday to the Seren hot tub tent and were blown away with the glamping tents The owners were very welcoming and throughout our stay were very friendly and helpful to what activities were available in the area. Including an amazing day on a beach that we would have never found. The overall cleanliness of the place was exceptional from the actual tent to the hot tub and shower facilities. It was a perfect stay for 5 lads and couldn’t have asked for anything more!

From the emails about our booking to the lovely touches in the 'tent' this holiday has been great. Location - ticks all the boxes, close to lots of beaches and walks for us and Bramble our cocker spaniel. Tent - amazing. I don't like to call it a tent as you feel like you are in a house until of course it rains and the temperature drops a bit and then you remember you are glamping, but none of that matters as the wood burning stove keeps the tent cosy and the beds are so comfy it is lovely listening to the pitter patter of rain and know that you are not really camping... We also had one of the wet room tents which was nice as we had a shower on hand but the showers on site looked good and we would not have minded one of those if we were in one of the tents that did not have one, I believe that they all have a loo and sink. Welcome - Eliie, Dan and the girls could not do enough for us, we were welcomed by them and the three big pigs and the girls gave us a tour of the site. The safari tents had everything we needed and more with nice touches like Baavets (duvets made of wool, we are now getting one!) everything we needed to cook with and nice cosy blankets bought to us the first evening as the temperature dropped. We ordered a breakfast hamper and as the shop where they are purchased from (a local organic fam shoppe type of place we stocked up in a couple of times whilst there) did not bake on Mondays Ellie baked us a loaf herself and even popped in some homemade jam which was lush. To sum up a small family business with all the right touches and more, you will not be disappointed if you book a stay here !!

We had a really wonderful and relaxing couple of nights in the heart of the beautiful Welsh countryside. The tent was really comfortable, and even wowed our hard-to-impress teenage children - though I thought our daughter was never going to leave the box bed! With one stormy night cosying up by the stove and one tranquil night barbecuing under the stars we couldn't have wished for a better stay. Thank you.

We travelled in Wales for more than 3 weeks and did a lot of glampingsites, but this one was by far out the best!!!! The tents are sooo luxurious!! And Dan, Ellie and their kids are the best hosts ever!!! Our kids really loved the morning walks where they could help to feed all the animals on the farm. The beds were so comfy and the tent is pretty dark in the morning, so we could enjoy long sleeps! This was just overall such a lovely place to stay!!! Amazing view, amazing tents, amazing hosts and amazing property! THE BEST!!!

Come and join us for an amazing glamping experience in one of the most breath-taking corners of Wales. Experience rural wales at it's absolute best. Soak up incredible night skies, the sounds of birdsong, the culture, the heritage, the food, the amazing coastline. Pant Yr Hwch is our 19th century 11 acre smallholding in rural Wales. We are a family and dog friendly site, although children and dogs are not compulsory! We have five stunning safari tents, and a converted cow shed, all equipped with wood burning stoves, comfy beds, sofas, flushing toilets and running water. One of our tents 'Seren' has a wood-fired hot tub, as does our Little Cowshed Beudy Bach. Dyffryn and Enfys are our two accessible tents. The tents are located in a southwest facing part of the farm with amazing views. The site is home to a huge variety of wildlife, and we also have a small flock of sheep, chickens, and three pigs. Guests are welcome to help feed the animals most mornings. We are just 8 mins from the historic University town of Lampeter, 20 mins from the beautiful Georgian harbour town of Aberaron, 25 mins from the stunning Brechfa forest, and 30 mins from the beautiful beaches of New Quay, Llangranog, and Tresaith. There is loads to do nearby, but if you want to venture slightly further afield you can explore the Cambian uplands, the Brecon Beacons, Cardigan, Aberystwyth, Pembrokeshire and the Elan Valley.
Nearby attractions

Pant yr Hwch is on the doorstep of the Ceredigion Coastal Path, so there are plenty of spectacular walks nearby. Pick a stretch near Llangrannog, then head for a spot of lunch at The Ship. Alternatively, take a walk from Llanerchaeron, a beautiful 18th-century gentry estate, to the picturesque harbour town of Aberaeron – a pretty Georgian village with pastel coloured houses. Here, you can taste The Hive's famous honey ice-cream whilst taking a stroll along the harbour. There are plenty of fantastic beaches along the Cardigan coastline. Poppit Sands is a wide stretch of golden sandy beach backed by dunes, on the northern northern end of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. For a little more seclusion, Mwnt beach (owned by the National Trust) is a sheltered cove where seals and bottlenose dolphins are often spotted.

Food and drink

There's a small honesty shop onsite, but any extra fruit and veg can be collected from Watson & Pratts or the Blaencamel Organic Farm, both in Lampeter. Whilst you are there, try the homemade ice-cream at Conti’s Café. The market town also hosts a popular food festival in July, held on the grounds of the University college.
