Best in South Wales: Finalist
Named one of the best Hipcamps to visit in 2024.
A back-to-basics Carmarthenshire campsite with farm animals and a tearoom

This rural Carmarthenshire campsite manages to be both in the middle of nowhere and the middle of everything you might want to visit in south Wales. Situated on a smallholding with an on-site tearoom, its location lies between the mountains of the Brecon Beacons and the sea. It’s close enough to both for day trips and far enough from anywhere to be peaceful. By day, you might hear sheep in nearby fields and by night it’ll just be owls hooting as you toast marshmallows on your campfire.

It’s the stuff of a classic farm campsite – and that’s what you can expect from here. There’s no club house, no electric hook up and no reception building: it’s simply a place to pitch your tent or park up in a campervan or motorhome. There’s a compost loo and a drinking water tap in the two-acre field which never gets too crowded, thanks to a sensible 15 unit limit. Clear signs direct you in and you’re welcome to find your own place to pitch as nothing is marked out here.

Host Andy will likely pay you a visit to see if you need firewood or a fire pit later or you can wander over to the tearoom to say hello and, perhaps, book in for tomorrow’s breakfast or lunch. It's a great option if you don’t fancy cooking but don't want to get in the car. The animals on site will help keep the kids amused: cute pygmy goats, chickens, and ducks, with horses grazing in neighbouring fields. There’s a great walk with cracking views straight from the site: a circular route taking in the peak of nearby Mynydd Llangyndeyrn. But, in truth, the glory of this site is its location in central south Wales. It’s not too far off the A48, so relatively easy to get to and from here you can visit so much. Llandeilo, the Brecon Beacons, Tenby, the Gower Peninsula and even Swansea itself are all within an hour’s drive.

Beautiful Open field. Sheltered pitches along the treeline, max 15 pitches. Unallocated. Beautiful composting toilet (no shower yet but it's on it's way). Fresh water tap. There is a flushing toilet / wash basin with hot running water at the Tea Room (250yard walk). Tearoom open Thurs - Sun. We are surrounded by farmland / animals. Owls, Bats, Red Kites, Buzzards - all regular sightings.

Host comes across really friendly! Plot size was fine for me, I had field to myself as I went during off-season, nice size though. Easy enough to get to. Would return if I was back in the area

Great land in the middle of nowhere, perfect little pitch for people who just want to escape for a little while, easy enough to find with the clear instructions that were sent over. Would recommend

The space was super quiet and the hosts friendly. They came down to welcome us then left us to it. We had the whole space to ourselves which was great

Good old-fashioned, proper camping.

We've just returned from a lovely weekend camping at Tor Cefn Tearooms. Andy was friendly and helpful and our lunch in the tearoom was very good indeed. I would definitely recommend hiring a firepit from Andy, that was excellent value for money. There is plenty of space in the field, and all the other campers were very amenable.

Lovely little camping field approx 2 acres in the beautiful and peaceful Carmarthenshire countryside. Currently camping pitches in field but we are creating some individual woodland camping pitches over the next few weeks. Fire pits/firewood wood available, as well as a communal fire pit. Well behaved dogs welcome. We usually rear a few orphaned lambs from a neighbours farm in the spring early summer if you fancy trying your hand at bottle feeding........ there's also goats/chickens/ducks. Oh nearly forgot we have a fabulous Tea Room open Thurs - Sun for breakfast, lunches, Teas, Coffee, Beer, Wine! We're 15 minutes from the amazing Cefen Siden Sand beach (8 miles of golden sand and dunes) and the Pembrey Country Park. There's excellent walking/cycling direct from the campsite. Pub and local Co-op are a mile down the road.
Nearby attractions

You can head out on some nice walks directly from Tor Cefn campsite. A good one is the route up Mynydd Llangyndeyrn, a 263-metre peak that can be reached on a three-mile round trip. And if walking is your thing, head for the Brecon Beacons National Park. The western edge is about half an hour’s drive from here. You can reach both Tenby on the very edge of the Pembrokeshire coast and the Gower peninsula within an hour, but a closer beach is Cefn Sidan Sands, just 15 miles (but a drive of about 45 minutes) away. The Royal Botanic Gardens of Wales are seven miles from the campsite.

Food and drink

The on-site tea rooms are a real bonus for hungry campers, serving food during the daytime Thursday-Sunday. At other times, recommended local options are a drive away. Try The Red Lion in Llandyfaelog (five miles) or The White Hart Inn at Llanddarog (six miles). There’s a Co-op about a mile from site if you need supplies for cooking on the campsite.
