Creature comforts
Enjoy the comforts of home at some sites—including flush toilets, showers, and a kitchen.
Luxury glamping lodges with hot tubs and sprawling views across Mid Wales' Elan Valley.

Rural getaways don’t come much more luxurious than Bechan Retreats, its two high-end lodges sitting pretty atop the hidden Elan Valley in the heart of Mid Wales. The views are stunning both inside and out, with interiors that wouldn’t look out of place in a glamorous apartment, animals roaming the nearby meadows, and a hot tub from which to admire the countryside and ancient woodland.

Bechan Retreats is located only a few miles from Newtown, a pleasant town straddling the River Severn with a broad, busy, high street and a park beside the river. A comparatively unexplored part of Wales, Bechan’s position between Snowdonia and Shropshire Hills makes it handy for day trips to the hot spots but also a great place for exploring somewhere quieter. You can hike from the site to the ruins of Medieval Dolforwyn Castle or drive 20 minutes for a particularly special walk up to Llyn Mawr. The historic market town of Montgomery is around 15 minutes in one direction and the 750-acre estate of Gregynog Hall is 10 minutes in the other. There's plenty to see and do.

The secretive nature of this region is echoed by Bechan Retreats itself. Both lodges are tucked away on a valley slope and backed by trees for privacy. The site is located on a working farm, so grazing cows and sheep can be viewed from your private decking, while the clover pasture provides a large open space for the kids to play in. Evenings can be spent around the log burner, and there's a real home-away-from-home vibe here thanks to the comfy bedrooms, well-equipped kitchen, and modern bathroom complete with rainwater shower.

Luxury lodges within a working beef and sheep farm with access to fields, woodland and streams. Just a few miles from the popular marketing hub of Newtown, Bechan Retreats luxury lodges sit majestically at the helm of a hidden valley with lush green fields, ancient woodland and a flourishing array of natural wildlife. This peaceful oasis feels a million miles from the bustle of the modern world and provides the perfect tonic from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Relax and unwind in this gorgeous natural setting with just the birds and the bees for company. Sitting on the valley slope, both lodges perfectly soak up the sun as it sweeps through the valley and enjoy simply stunning views of the tranquil surrounding Welsh countryside.
Nearby attractions

Montgomery Castle is a 15-minute drive, ruins built by the Normans on the border between England and Wales that date all the way back to the 11th century. It provides tremendous views from its position atop a steep ridge, with visitors appropriately crossing a drawbridge in order to get to it. In a 20-minute drive you can reach Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, transporting visitors back in time with a steam train journey through Mid Wales. Built in 1903, this railway has a variety of experiences for all ages, such as afternoon tea and whisky and gin tasting. Booking is advised (01938 810441).

Food and drink

There are plenty of pubs and restaurants in close proximity to one another in Newtown. La Terrazza is an Italian bistro with very reasonable prices, its friendly staff serving up tasty and plentiful Mediterranean dishes – the carbonara is recommended, and booking is advised (01686 625546). The Waggon and Horses pub has a very popular beer garden, with plenty of seating options to bask in the sun during the summer months. Its restaurant has plenty of food options, including a delicious Sunday lunch (including a veggie wellington for the non-carnivores!), traditional pub classics, seafood, and more. The sirloin steak comes recommended.
