Bell tents and peaceful meadow camping in rural West Wales

Far from the nearest road, under the dark starry skies of rural Ceredigion is where you’ll find the pitches and bell tents of Awel Yr Awen. This is a campsite on an organic farm where you can have a campfire and watch red kites swoop and soar overhead. The site is small, the pitches are off grid and you will find yourself surrounded by nature – as the poet Dylan Thomas did when he stayed in the farmhouse here for a couple of postwar years. And while this peaceful farm is a lovely place to get away from it all – it’s not far from the beaches of Ceredigion Bay either. Aberaeron is a few miles down the road, New Quay is only half an hour’s drive away.

There are just two bell tents and six pitches here so the five-acre meadow that’s given over to camping and glamping guests never gets crowded. It’s so small and so well managed, in fact, that each pitch is named rather than numbered and every one is different. Choose Nuthatch for a south-facing spot, Woodpecker for shade at midday, Hron if you're coming in a van and Poplar for the luxury of your own compost loo.

The bell tents, five-metre Owl (which sleeps up to four) and four-metre Red Kite (which sleeps up to three) each have their own compost loos too. They are also kitted out with beds and bedding inside and a picnic bench outside. Everyone has their own stone-circled fire pit on the ground and logs are for sale on site. The other communal facilities are a pair of compost loos, a pair of rustic hot-water showers and a camper’s cabin where there’s electricity to power a fridge, freezer, kettle and, if you want it, to charge your phone. It’s a back to basics site but all the important stuff is taken care of which makes it an excellent base from which to explore Ceredigion or in which to simply relax and watch red kites and stars.

Beautiful location to camp
This is a beautiful location to camp. The pitches are wonderfully laid out, each with their own space, a fire pit and lots of space. Really a place to unwind and relax.

Quiet meadow with stunning views!
Rolanda's Campsite is absolutely beautiful, wild and peaceful. We had the whole campsite to ourselves which is a first for me! My partner and I stayed in our campervan and my parents stayed in one of the bell tents. Rolanda was lovely and made us feel really welcome, I would highly recommend this campsite for an authentic camping experience.

Awel yr Awen is a charming and exclusive campsite situated on a historic 72-acre organic farm in rural West Wales just 15 minutes from the coast. The beautiful Aeron valley farmhouse was an escape from London for poet Dylan Thomas who lived here with his wife Caitlin in the 1940s. There are now 8 spacious, stunning and secluded pitches spaced out across a 5 acre field tucked well away from roads and neighbours where all the eye can see is farmland, woodland, trees and sky..
Nearby attractions

The closest place to reach the coast is the small and pretty harbour town of Aberaeron (eight miles). There’s a shingle and stone beach there as well as a harbour full of fishing boats and you can join the Wales Coast Path to walk in either direction. Further south, you find the popular seaside town of Newquay (13 miles). There you can hop aboard a dolphin-watching boat trip or build sandcastles on the beach. There are more sandy beaches as you head further south on Cardigan Bay: Penbryn (20 miles) for example. Away from the beach, and closer to site, Ty  Glyn Gardens (three miles) is a nice place to explore for an hour or two and there are more, grander gardens at the National Trust’s Llanerchaeron Estate. The ruins of Strata Florida Abbey are 17 miles away as is the university town of Aberystwyth.

Food and drink

Awel Yr Awen is eight miles from Aberaeron where there’s a good range of places to eat and drink including The Hive and The Harbour Master, which both offer good food overlooking the harbour, and The Cellar for elegant fine dining. In the heart of town, The Stubborn Duckling is a good option offering local, seasonal food. The town is also the place to pick up supplies if you want to cook back at the campsite and Watson and Pratt’s is the go-to place for organic, local goodies. There’s another branch in Lampeter (eight miles) where you’ll also find the closest big-name supermarkets. For basics closer to the campsite, there’s a village shop in Felin Fach.
