A welcoming campsite on the West Highland Way

Hipcamp hosts are generally a welcoming lot but, perhaps, none more so than Andrew Edmonstone of the West Highland Way Campsite. This year-round camping and glamping site in the foothills of the Highlands is a not-for-profit enterprise within the vast Duntreath Estate which Andrew calls home. Your pitch fee not only gives you a rather scenic spot among mountains and forests but it also helps support van lifers—those who live in their vans and vehicles full time. They are offered a safe space to park up for as long as they need it. And for us part-time campers it’s a pretty welcoming place too. Tents, campervans, motorhomes and caravans are all equally welcome. And dogs are invited along as well.

The campsite is about 20 minutes’ drive from the north of Glasgow and 20 minutes from the edge of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. It’s close to the place where the 96-mile West Highland Way crosses the 134-mile John Muir Way, two long-distance walking routes designed to showcase the scenery in this part of Scotland. As a result this place is a godsend for hikers—especially as breakfast is included. That’s served in the site’s clubhouse cafe where tea, coffee, lunch and evening meals are on offer too.

The campsite is pretty big, with 40 pitches for those with a tent, campervan, or motorhome, and 40 bell tents. Pitches can be with or without electric hook-up and are straightforwardly priced per head with no additional charges. Even logs for your campfire (if you want one) are included in the fee. The bell tents, of course, are differently priced but you’re paying for the luxury of a pre-erected tent, a blow-up bed and your bedding all provided.

However you choose to stay, the West Highland Way Campsite is a great base on the edge of the Highlands. The Duntreath Estate offers plenty to do. There’s a whisky distillery, fishing, falconry and golf. Along with the lochs, mountains, forests and wildlife; it’s just about everything you might hope for on a holiday in Scotland.

Site 1 - Safari Bell Tents

The site itself is lovely and the staff were nice. But on my second night there was a lot of noise around the site. Late in the evening a group arrived to stay in the bell tents. One of the male staff was showing them the tents saying they could stay in any of them. He came over to my tent (I was in bed) and attempted to open it telling the group that it was empty, I called out saying it was occupied but he kept trying to open it. I called out again repeatedly and thankfully some of the group heard me and told him to stop, that there was someone in there. He didn't apologise and didn't close the tent again, just walked off. I then heard him asking if the group wanted drugs - cocaine, acid, weed mentioned. Shortly after this two extremely loud fights started between two different groups of people who appeared to be living on the site in caravans and tents. A lot of screaming and shouting and what sounded like plates and things being smashed. This went on until well after 2am. As I was staying here as a solo female traveler this was pretty scary and I wouldn't stay here again as a result. It's a big shame because the house on the site is lovely and the staff seemed nice.

Hi the facility are not very good for Motorhome The site was very clean and in a beautiful situation the staff was very friendly The chemicals toilets cleaning point was next to the kitchen and was a pipe hole in the ground could not find anywhere for grey water Was a little disappointed specially has we had done two week in Scotland on the nc500 so the price was the most we had paid and the facility was the poorest we had stop at for a Motorhome but after saying that for tents it is perfect and very clean and beautiful place to stay Dave

Site 1 - Safari Bell Tents

Had a fantastic time with my partner, little ones and our wee pooch. Andrew was a great host and so friendly. Highly recommended!

Nice camp site, not enough toilets

The grounds are reasonably nice, the staff are friendly, there's a great view from the hard camper van pitches at the front. It is super handy for the west highland way, especially as there a pre-pitched tents available. The main issue is the facilities. There are 5 toilets, 3 of which contain showers for use by campers and those in camper vans. During the summer, especially the weekends, you will find yourself queueing for quite some time for the toilet. For 1 or 2 nights this probably won't frustrate you too much. For a week it gets pretty annoying. Similarly there is 1 sink for washing up/dishes. When it's less busy all of this probably isn't an issue.

Abusive permanent residents

Permenant residents were vile. While we were aware and happy that the site allowed free roaming dogs, one by the name of river climbed up on our table where we were sat having breakfast with our dog on a lead. We gently pushed river down off the table as he'd climbed on with his heckles up for what seemed like a hight advantage and we didn't feel safe nor comfortable with a dog of that stature in that position. The owner came over shouting, pointing and spitting last night's tea out of his teeth telling us all about how he lives on site and he'll have us removed etc calling us all sorts of names in a threatening manner. He made the point several times that it's a dog free roaming site which we knew but dogs on the table not only while we're eating but approaching us and our dog in an unfriendly manner was not good. The site itself was okay, nice enough area although the facilities were somewhat lacking, the bins in the toilets had no lids so it was just full of unwrapped used sanitary pads. Young kids playing football against out tent till early hours of the morning while their mother scolded them for knocking her joint out of her hand.. The included breakfast had little to be desired with toast, crumpets and a couple cereal choices, however, that being said, it was nice to have it on offer. Overall, an okay site, not necessarily worth the £40 for a tent pitch. With a little tlc and an eviction notice for the abusive residents, it could even be a nice place to stay.

Our campsite caters for caravans, motorhomes, backpacking tents etc. We also have Shepherds Huts and Safari Glamping Tents. Pet friendly. Camp fires allowed. Breakfast is included. Evening meals available.

Nearby attractions

The clue is in the name – West Highland Way Campsite is on the West Highland Way, a long distance walking route. It provides a well-signposted way to get out and explore from the campsite – even if you are not tackling the whole thing. It’s also on the John Muir Way and within the estate that the campsite is situated on there are some rhododendron trees that John Muir himself, a Scottish-American naturalist, planted on site in the 19th century. They’re in bloom in May and June. The estate is also home to the Glengoyne Distillery (two miles) where you can enjoy a tour and tasting and Strathblane Falconry (also two miles). Hilton Park Golf Club and Carbeth Fishery are also within three miles. The edge of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park is less than 10 miles away with the shores of Loch Lomond itself about 12 miles away and RSPB Loch Lomond nine miles from the campsite.

Food and drink

A continental breakfast is included in your pitch fee and available in the clubhouse cafe each morning. Free tea and coffee are also available all day. Food is available to buy at other times of the day too, including evening meals, so there’s little need to go elsewhere but if you fancy a trip to the local pub, try The Beech Tree Inn four miles up the road towards Loch Lomond. Closer to home, Strathblane (just over a mile) has a small shop and a coffee shop too.
