Strathnaver Museum, Bettyhill (14 miles) – housed in the former church of St Columba, the museum takes visitors on a tour, from Strathnaver’s numinous past all the way to the Highland Clearances; 01641 521418. Forsinard Nature Reserve (13 miles) – wet bogs aren’t, perhaps, humankind’s favourite terrain, but there’s plenty of wildlife that won’t give them the cold shoulder. At Forsinard there’s a chance of spying greenshanks, hen harriers, golden plovers, dunlin and the odd golden eagle; otters in the river or bog pools; and herds of red deer; 01955 602596.
