A lochside campsite on the Isle of Mull

With loch and mountain views, it’s fair to say that Port nan Gael Campsite on the Isle of Mull is a scenic place to pitch up for the night. It welcomes tents, campervans, motorhomes and touring caravans to its special spot in the south west of this island in the Inner Hebrides. Located halfway along the road that connects Craignure, where ferries from the mainland dock, with Fionnphort, where those for Iona depart, it’s an excellent place to stopover for a night. But once you’ve seen the sunset and the stars, you might wish you were staying longer. This place is excellent for both – and, if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

The campsite faces west, which is good for those sunset views, and there are no streetlights here so, at night, it’s truly dark. And while you feel pretty “out there”, your needs are well catered for on site. Hipcampers with wheels can choose from a handful of grassy pitches with electric hook up and folk with tents have freedom to pitch where they please in a separate field. The site is also home to 30 hardstanding pitches and glamping pods. All pitches have access to wifi, hot showers, flushing loos and an outdoor pot wash. And there’s a pub on site which serves food too. In addition to all this convenience, there's one that tops the lot: a digital automated check in – which works with your car registration number and CCTV so you can check in whenever you want. It's handy as ferries from the mainland sometimes arrive late at night.

You can launch kayaks and paddleboards straight into the loch from here, you can swim, fly fish or watch wildlife. The island is known as a good place to see white-tailed sea eagles and you can often spot them from the campsite along with otters in the loch and deer on the shores. A trip to car-free Iona is one of the island’s must-do activities and a visit to Tobermory is another. Both can be tackled from here and while neither is on the doorstep (it's half an hour to the Iona ferry, an hour to Tobermory), the journey's are all part of this island's adventure.

Lovely new campsite!
Stayed here for a long weekend and it was perfect. Despite being right next to the road its super quiet and peaceful, and the sea breeze keeps the midgies away too. The site is well laid out with signs posted all around the site for ease of use and to know where you're going/ parking etc. Toilet & shower facilities are super clean and spacious and theres a sheltered pot wash with hot water. Could do with a bin in here just for food waste in drains etc but thats nit picking. Its a self check in so you just find a pitch and go if you've booked already, or theres a sign at the entry to book with instructions to follow. Free wifi throughout the site was an appreciated extra. Inn next door is also lovely for food & drinks, very nice staff and dog friendly. Overall a great stay here and would happily come back.

Relaxed loch side camping
Fabulous views across the Loch and over to Ben More Mull. Great facilities and the Inn is a great place for food and a few drinks. Around an hour to Tobermory, Salen and Fionnophort a little less. Great base

Perfect pitch
Site was fab. Brand new facilities and lots of space between pitches. Pretty perfect. Being right on the water is such a special thing. There is also a river with a small fall and pool to swim right on the edge of the camp. Amazing water pressure too! The food and vibe at the Inn is great.

Nearby attractions

Port nan Gael Campsite is in the southern part of the Isle of Mull on the shores of Loch Scridain, a sea loch. The water here is shallow and sheltered, ideal for a paddle, kayak or paddleboard. You can go on a walk on the loch shore or for those who like more of a challenge how about bagging the munroe on the opposite shore? Ben More is a 945-metre peak that forms part of your view here. The best place to tackle it from is a half-hour drive away on the northern side, from Dhiseig (15 miles) and the walk takes around six hours. Another nice, but challenging walk, is to see the Carsaig Arches on the island’s southern shore. The starting point is at Carsaig Pier (four miles), the walk is about five hours. You’ll need to be prepared to walk if you want to visit Iona too as vehicles are left on Mull and you cross via a 10-minute ferry ride. This tiny island is known for its abbey and lovely beaches. Fionnphort where you can hop aboard the ferry is 16 miles from the campsite. There are also boat trips from here to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles where you can see puffins and other seabirds, wildlife and geology. Tobermory, Mull’s main town, is a very attractive fishing port about an hour’s drive from the campsite (32 miles).

Food and drink

The Inn at Port nan Gael is the on-site pub and serves a menu of good pub food everyday. The site also has a small shop with basics due to open in 2024 (check ahead if you are hoping to pick up supplies there). The next closest shop is the Spar at the Post Office in Bunessan (10 miles). There’s another in Craignure (16 miles), which may be more convenient to stop at when you cross from the mainland but the closest supermarkets are on the mainland. At Fionnphort, you can buy fresh fish and seafood from The Creel Seafood Bar and in Tobermory, there’s a choice of places to eat out plus the Tobermory Distillery where you can join a tour and tasting.
