Orchard Farm Camping is a welcoming little campsite for folk who like the simple things in life. A single paddock of just under an acre plays host to a yurt, a bell tent, and five off-grid pitches in the Ayrshire countryside. Dogs are allowed, campfires are allowed, and campervans and motorhomes are allowed too. But be aware that this is a back-to-basics site with mostly grassy pitches. There’s no chemical disposal point and space for manoeuvring is limited, so it’s best suited for those with smaller rigs and tents. If you think you’ll fit in here, lucky you. It’s a pretty spot from which to discover this part of Scotland’s south west, once home to Robert Burns himself.
The closest town, Maybole, is said to be where his parents met and the humble cottage he was born in is preserved as a museum just eight miles from here. But that’s not all. This place is also just 11 miles from the Scottish west coast. Head for Maiden’s Beach for views of Aisla Crag and the Mull of Kintyre or perhaps explore the clifftop Culzean Castle, gardens and country park. Inland, it’s about the same distance to the mountain biking of Galloway Forest.
Orchard Farm is a good off-grid base from which to explore in all directions. It’s just off the main road (though it’s not particularly busy), which leads to the closest shop and pub, to Maybole and beyond. You park up, perhaps say hello to owner, Phil, and stroll about 50 metres to where you’ll pitch your tent. That’s done on an ad-hoc basis as there’s no electricity or pitch markers to hem you in. Facilities are a couple of compost loos, a couple of semi-outdoor hot water showers and a tap for drinking water. Campfires are allowed in off-ground fire pits only; rent one from Phil or bring your own and enjoy the simple pleasures during your stay in Ayrshire.
