Woodland camping and glamping in the heart of France's national forest and right beside a beautiful lake beach

Huttopia Lac de Sillé Campsite isn’t exactly small. There are over 150 pitches in total. Yet you could be forgiven for thinking it’s almost half that size. After all it is completely dwarfed by its surroundings. The forest around spreads for over 3,500 hectares and, just a few yards away, a huge lake in the shape of a teardrop glistens in the sun. It’s creatively named ‘Le Grand Étang’, literally meaning ‘the big lake’.

Pitches vary wildly across the site. At its furthest point, where the trees are thickest, there’s a real woodland feel and tents spread among the bows with bicycles leaning idle against the trees. Closer to reception, meanwhile, the space is far more open and generally feels a bit more ‘parky’ with motorhomes and caravans in among the larger family tents. There’s an array of glamping accommodation options – in particular safari tent-style lodges in various sizes – and wooden cabins equipped with everything you could possibly.

It’s the activities that this campsite is perhaps most well known for. There’s a whole range possible around the lake, including mountain biking, watersports, swimming, climbing, zip-lines, archery, fishing, and more. Then there are the facilities specific to the campsite itself: ping-pong tables, volleyball courts and bikes available to hire. There’s an indoor area with board games and books in case it rains (though if you’ve headed here from the UK, rain probably isn’t anything to worry about).

The focus is definitely on families but if kids and noise all become a bit too much there’s a pleasant 2km walk through the woods to nearby Sillé-le-Guillaume. The tiny town has a sleepy feel but all the French essentials – cute cafés, excellent delicatessens and an old Château. It’s a quiet contrast to the hive that is Huttopia Lac de Sillé.

Beautiful setting in the woods
This is a beautiful spot in the woods and a short walk from many trails and the lake. It was easy to find, and the village, where you can get food and other necessities, is only a couple of miles up the road. We enjoyed cycling to the village, despite it being mostly uphill coming back. The weather was unseasonably cool so we didn't get to enjoy the pool as much as we would have liked, but it is a really lovely pool. The site is huge but wasn't very busy during our stay. There are more secluded pitches than the one we were on, and next time we will request one that is a bit further from the washing facilities/toilet block and a bit quieter. However, even near the facilities and with other campers nearby and walking by, it was still relatively quiet and we enjoyed our stay. The many options for enjoying the natural surroundings is a huge plus at this site.

We only stayed for one night, wouldn’t want to do longer, good sized pitch’s, clean facilities but strange toilets (no seats), the lake was great, a lovely bike ride around it.

After two weeks in another huttopia site we somewhat knew what to expect. However the site didn’t have enough staff on to manage with checking in and other busy points during the day. This meant a 30-40 minute wait just to check in. That said the staff were great, we weren’t happy with our first pitch and they soon helped us find a better one. The site it’s self is in need of a little updating. The shower block is clean and tidy but a little old, toilet seats wouldn’t go a miss. The location is fantastic we had our paddle board with us and it sure had a good run out. The lake is a hive of activity for the whole family. A week is enough as there’s not too much going on aside from lake. Le Mans itself was a little bit disappointing.

Spacious, chilled out campsite among the trees. We could see the lake from our tent, and had great fun paddle boarding and swimming in the lake. It's a 10 minute cycle ride through the woods to the sandy beach on the other side of the lake, where we swam, built sandcastles and ate ice creams and crepes from the small snack bar (there's also a restaurant). Staff are friendly and helpful. The (heated) pool is not huge but the kids loved it regardless. Toilets and showers were kept very clean. All in all, highly recommended especially for families.

We stayed in a classic tent - really enjoyed it had most things we needed. Would recommend taking own bedding though as pillows lumpy and no proper sheets. Very peaceful site with a few activities but not too many - staff very helpful. Lake was amazing with loads of things to do around it including watersports and lots of walks. Site is shady due to the nature of being in a forest but lots of wildlife around. Would recommend to other families.

This campsite is a real find and the lake is superb. There is a beach at one end for smaller children but we swam all over with older children. Kelly was excellent, her English is superb and she would go over and above to help where possible, even when busy. You can order pizzas or rotisserie chicken at the reception area and one night a chap arrived with a van full of wooden games. We would not normally join in with evening entertainment but it is done in such a nice/ non commercial way at this site, we all really enjoyed. We also usually go for a smaller site but this one suited us this time as you never feel like it is too big and there is so much to do. We never had to queue for a shower! The pool is small but most of the time we swam in the lake. It was a very active holiday which suited us and we had an absolute ball - one of the best so far. Take care when booking the watersports on the lake as it is run by a different company and seemed a bit slack. Le Mans racetrack is about 35 mins away and worth a visit. Thanks again to Kelly and the team - we may well be back.

The ideal destination for families looking for active outdoor holidays by the water. Huttopia Lac de Sillé campsite is nestled in the heart of the forest, on the shores of the lake. The ideal destination to relax in a peaceful setting and enjoy open air activities to the full. Nearby attractions
Huttopia Lac de Sillé is alongside the Sillé Beach activity park, with its 3,500 hectares of forest, lakes and Coco Beach swimming area. If you've brought bikes or rent them from the site, then there are ample trails to follow. Pick up maps and ideas at reception. It's 2 km to Sillé Le Guillaume (0033 2 43 20 10 32) where you should pop your head into the Collegiate Church of Our Lady of Assumption and the Château of Sillé – two magnificent historical monuments. Le Mans (0033 2 43 28 17 22) is further away (30km), so you'll need to take the car, but worth a visit. Its compact historical quarter – the Plantagenet City – can all be explored easily on foot and the encircling Roman walls are often considered to be the best preserved of the late Roman Empire in Europe.
Food and drink
The snack wagon offers simple food that you can eat on the terrace overlooking the pool or take away. It is open on the May bank holiday weekends (English and French) and throughout July and August. There's a small grocery store in the reception area and bread and croissants are available to order in advance. For something elsewhere walk (or drive) to Sillé Le Guillaume where there are plenty of options.
