Family-friendly camping near the waters of Lac de Maine and within easy cycling distance of Angers' medieval city centre

Angers may just be the perfect place for an urban camping holiday. Nicknamed ‘the Green City’, on account of its countless parks and green spaces and set around the confluence of river after river after river. It is perhaps the only city that can offer such urban vibrancy alongside lakes, islands, nature parks and protected wildlife zones. And the biggest of these parks – found by crossing the bridge from Angers’ famously grand château and strolling a few minutes south into the Belle-Beille district – is the park of Lac de Maine. It’s here that you’ll find the setting for your almost-urban adventure.

Set in the southwest corner of the 300-acre park, Camping d’Angers has recently been taken over and rejuvenated by the Huttopia group, a conscientious brand with campsites across France where a natural feel is as important as family-friendly facilities. Mature trees populate Camping d’Angers and more have just been planted, while the hundred-odd pitches all have access to a newly refurbished wash-block and heaps of outdoor activity options, including a swimming pool, playground, table tennis tables and a volleyball court.

Cyclists are particularly in their element. The campsite is on a number of popular routes, many of which meet in and around Angers as they follow the course of the various rivers. The Loir, the Sarthe, the Mayenne, the Maine and the Loire all converge within 10km of Angers city centre and the campsite provides bike storage and basic repair equipment for those in need. For everyone else, meanwhile, you can also hire bikes from reception for a pedal around the lake or to cycle your way into town. Between the gothic cathedral (built between the 11th and 16th centuries and a national monument of France) and the massive riverside château that is home to the biggest medieval tapestry ensemble in the world, there are plenty of key attractions to tick off the holiday bucket list. Beyond, meanwhile, lies the UNESCO recognised reaches of the Loire Valley, the rolling vineyards of the region and the countless more château that this part of the world offers at every turn.

Pitch with Electricity
Good facilities but poor pitch
The facilities at the site were great and the staff were very helpful/efficient. However I did consider our pitch to be rather small and it felt like a site that was more geared up for campervans/motor homes than tents. I do not know if there was a noise curfew but if there was it was not enforced on the Saturday night we were there.

Great site with lovely facilities and a super location a short walk/ bike ride from the lake. We stayed in the Evasion chalet, simple but very functional and practically kitted out. Very grateful for the fridge freezer given the hot weather endured! Remember to bring hand soap, extra loo roll, extra bin bags plus all the basics (salt, oil, tea, coffee, sugar ) for the kitchen. Staff were very helpful also very conscientious and mindful with the covid precautions. The bakery order the day before for the following morning, worked very well and the pastries delicious. We also ate very well from the grill. The pool and playground were fab for the kids. Very much enjoyed the bikes hired (hire available by the day or half day at an extra charge subject to availability) and the cycle to Angers is highly recommended.

Very friendly staff (thanks for the suggestion of ‘Chez Pont Pont’ for dinner!), now part of the Huttopia group so you know you’re getting a good standard. Recently renovated so new facilities and a great spot straight onto the extensive cycle tracks. Not quite as clean as I’d have expected given how often it should be cleaned, but that doesn’t detract from the quality of the place. I suppose it did feel a little soulless in a way, but many sites do in September. They’re all still quite busy so I don’t really see why the bar and restaurant are open only for 2 months as they’re such a central and huge feature of the place! They could at least open reduced hours or areas rather than full closure. Still a lovely site though.

Family tent
Really well run, very clean and well organised with lovely staff. Close to lots of great things to do like the Chateau Angers and Terra Botanica. Only draw back is it is perhaps the least characterful Cool Camping site we have been too. Less Cool Camping ad more Efficient Camping in feel.

Opt for a city break in the heart of nature! In the Loire Valley, just a stone's throw from the town centre of Angers, Camping d'Angers campsite boasts an exceptional location in the heart of a 120-hectare park. On site, enjoy quality services: restaurant, heated swimming pool, paddling pool, laundry room, playground and more. The campsite offers peaceful pitches in a wooded setting for you to set up your tent, caravan or motorhome. With electricity (electricity 10Amp), you can choose the pitch that suits you from among the 141 pitches available. The main washrooms have been fully renovated and offer bright and modern facilities, while other services include free WIFI, a motorhome service point, a bread service (for fresh bread every morning) and bikes hire. Castles, cycle paths, renowned wine estates, and the region's traditional heritage. From the springtime, you can explore the tourist attractions of Angers, the historic capital of Anjou, including its castle, cathedral, gardens, quays, and markets. Or explore the city's immediate surroundings and beautiful setting. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the unique landscapes of the Loire Valley are well worth discovering. Set out from Angers along the Loire Valley wine route to discover Anjou's exceptional wine heritage. Come and meet the winegrowers of Savennières and Aubance wines who will share their know-how with you and offer you the pleasure of a wine tasting. Camping d'Angers campsite is an ideal starting point for exploring the many footpaths and cycle paths where nature lovers can enjoy the local flora and fauna, cross the forests, and reach the famous Loire castles.
Nearby attractions
It's 1km to the nearest supermarket, petrol station, bakery, bank and so on, and 5km into the very heart of the old town centre from the campsite. There's a bus stop 300m from the campsite that takes you (via bus number 6) into the centre in 25 minutes and there are also cycle paths right from the campsite entrance (bikes available to hire) that take you into town through a beautiful 250-acre park. In fact, the whole cycle path is a delight, stick with it to enjoy not only the old town of Angers, but also old slate quarries and the banks of the River Maine, which can be followed far beyond the city. The campsite borders Lac de Maine, where swimming is permitted (lifeguards through summer), while kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding and sailing are all options too. You can also join regular nature walks – the lake is a protected bird reserve with a total of nearly 235 species recorded. Finally, in Angers itself, the cathedral (0033 2 4187 5845), the riverside château (0033 2 4186 4877), the Musée des Beaux-Arts (0033 2 4105 3800) and the Museum of Natural Science (0033 2 4105 4850) are the main attractions, but you can spend hours simply exploring the city's nooks and crannies. Start with a visit to the tourist information centre if you want to get your bearings.
Food and drink
An on-site snack wagon opens all day during July and August (drinks, homemade pizzas, salads, snacks and more) with an outdoor terrace overlooking the swimming pool. You can also take away. Fresh bread and pastries are available to order each day (place your order the evening before). Head into Angers centre for endless more options. Bistrot des Ducs (0033 2 4186 8868) on Rue des Deux Haies is a particularly good, independently run eatery for genuinely French cuisine. For something super casual, pizzas from humble-looking Le Napoli (0033 2 4187 6809) on Rue Toussaint are also a guilty pleasure.
