Great synchronicity led us to the wild 30 acres of marsh and woodland that is Turtle Marsh. In addition to making a home here, we dedicating the area as a sanctuary for the quiet enjoyment of nature, eco-spiritual practices and healing. Guests may elect to experience a daily hour-long "Ecospiritual Immersion" walk as part of their stay. These will be led by Ecospiritual Guide and "Wild Mind, Wild Heart" author, Peter Wohl. He has led ecospiritual workshops and retreats for over 20 years. There is a network of trails on our property for enjoying quiet, contemplative walks. In the evenings, weather permitting, there will also be an opportunity for an informal campfire discussion with Peter. There is an additional fee for the walks and campfires. There are several trailheads for the Hills to Sea Trail within a mile of our property. The quintessential New England waterfront town of Belfast on Penobscot Bay, is less than 30 minutes away. One of our favorite spots for quiet hikes along the shore of the bay, is Sears Island. It is one of the largest undeveloped islands on the east coast, that is connected to the mainland by a causeway. The island is 50 minutes away and even on the busiest summer days, its's usually possible to find a quiet spot on the shore to sit and reflect. As we continue to deepen our relationship with this land, we are trying to follow the principles of Deep Ecology in all of our interactions. Our tentsite, while only a 5 minute walk from the road, has been sited to offer as much solitude as possible, with minimal disruption to the surroundings. In spite of being nestled in the woods, no trees were cut to prepare this relatively accessible site. We believe that it still offers a very tangible sense of wildness and solitude. Turn your time away into a transformative and healing experience, as you connect more deeply to the natural world. We hope that you will enjoy the experience of Turtle Marsh as much as we do.“In wildness is the preservation of the world”- Thoreau Located in Unity, Maine, Turtle Marsh is 30 acres of woods, streams and marshland, dedicated to eco-spirituality and nature-based healing. Anyone who wishes to experience deep connection with the natural world and to benefit from the healing energies of these wildlands, is welcome to join us at the Marsh. In keeping with our ecospiritual mission and Deep Ecology principles, we offer a seclued woodland campsite with very simple amenities, including a large (13') comfortable bell tent on a platform, a full size futon bed, a large deck, a 10x10 screenhouse with picnic table, a composting humanure toilet and a sun-shower. The site is about a five minute walk from the parking. For an additional fee of $45.00/day, guests are also welcome to participate in a morning hour long Ecospiritual Immersion walk. and an evening fireside talk, both guided by Peter Wohl, ecospiriual guide, author and Registered Maine Guide. For a fee we can also offer: Nature photography as spiritual practice workshop • Guided eco-spiritual walks on the nearby Hills to Sea Trail.• Structured and supported personal retreats- following Zen Buddhist or eco-spiritual models. I would love to share my deep affection for these wilds with you. Peter

Autumn at Turtle Marsh
My 2nd visit at Turtle Marsh was just as lovely as the first. Beautiful autumn colors on the trees. I especially enjoyed the scenic overlook of the marsh. Interesting bird species throughout the grounds. Peter the host has made well marked trails that feature highlights of the forest, like a towering pine tree named “grandmother pine” and benches for a moment of reflection. Clean, well kept camp site in a quiet location great for getting some much needed rest and relaxation.

This spot was awesome, very secluded. Peter has set up a great site with nearly all needed amenities! Bring your clothes, bedding, food, utensils and you will need a light source! We will definitely visit again! Was very peaceful listening to the owls at night!

Glamping for a Traditional Camper
For my partner and I, this was a glamp experience. For those who normally spend their nights on the ground, it was a welcome retreat to sleep on a bed, and have all the necessary amenities to be comfortable. Peter was extremely helpful. We had amazing weather. While we didn't get the chance to stroll through the marsh, we could tell he did a lovely job with the trails. If you're looking for all the bells and whistles glamping experience, this isn't necessarily for you, but if you are like us, enjoy the simple amenities, nature, and a beautiful place to relax, then take a look at Turtle Marsh.

Magical Forest Camp
Secluded, wooded camp with excellent accommodations. As a solo female traveler I felt very safe here. Tent stayed warm and dry even through a rough rain storm overnight. Peter is helpful but not overbearing, and it was nice to know he was a short walk through the woods if I needed any help. The table set up with a net cover was awesome- make and enjoy your meals without any pests. Fire pit was cozy in the evening. Turtle marsh is a magical little place perfect for getting in touch with nature. My favorite thing was each time I explored the marsh, tiny little toads would hop by my feet. Adorable. If you need something or something to do- the Hills to Sea trailheads are all around nearby. The town of Unity, about 10min north has a small grocery and family dollar, and about 25min south to Liberty or China, there are lakes, ice cream shops, and plenty of farm stands. Great quiet location, I definitely want to return soon! My only advice is if you have an absolutely enormous vehicle you may have to check with the host for parking suggestions. Normal sized cars and SUVS will fit in the driveway just fine.

Turtle Marsh Sanctuary was a gem of a find for our family of 3, including our 22 month old daughter. The host, Peter, is an incredibly hospitable, insightful, and fun person to get to talk to. He went above and beyond to accommodate our stay. Peter made sure to think of everything you would need for a stay at Turtle Marsh. We hope to be back!

We had a wonderfully serene time camping at Peter’s site. The tent is located down a forested path and is quite private. Peter provided everything we could need from fire wood to a gas camp stove. We would stay again!
