Family camping in the Calvados countryside where 21st-century facilities are seamlessly blended into the historic grounds of a Normandy château

When you hear of a campsite with over 100 pitches, a heated swimming pool, a tennis court, mini-golf and a playground, it doesn’t exactly sound like a rural bolthole. More like a miniature holiday village. Yet drive down the wooded country roads of Calvados to Camping Calvados-Normandie, set within the vast 350-acre grounds of an old Normandy château and you will stand corrected. The pool is bordered by traditionally patterned tiles and fronted by landscaped gardens, the reception block is tucked away in a neatly restored, half-timbered barn and the pitches, all dedicated to camping without a chalet or static in sight, are spread across the estate’s beautiful apple orchard. This is big-scale camping with small-time country charm.

Acquired by the Huttopia group at the end of 2017, Camping Calvados-Normandie is slightly off the beaten track, without any villages within immediate walking distance. The result is a real sense of escapism, with walking trails around the surrounding estate and ample space for children to run off safely and explore. Perhaps the main centrepiece is the impressive former dovecote, tastefully transformed to house a cosy bar and library inside and standing tall over the swimming pool beyond. Smartly trimmed hedges and tall mature trees, meanwhile, line the way to the ivy-covered château itself.

While facilities keep parents happy – including excellent washrooms and helpful staff – and activities keep children at bay, the grassy camping space itself is also a real plus. Pitches are flat, spacious and well spread out and, while hedges don’t divide up each pitch, there’s a healthy dotting of trees providing plenty of shade.

Camping Calvados-Normandie is also notable for its handy location, making it a popular stopover for travellers further south. It’s less than an hour to the ports of La Harve and Caen, while it’s two hours to Cherbourg and St-Malo and three to the terminals at Calais. For those looking to mooch around the Normandy coast, however, this is very much a holiday destination in its own right. The ginormous Basilica of St. Thérèse is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in all of France, found in Lisieux, 30 minutes away, while the town also boats a 12th century cathedral and a medieval castle complete with a moat and peacock garden. Throw in the coastal treats of Deauville, Honfleur and Cabourg, plus the campsite’s pretty local village of Moyaux and you could well be here for days on end.

This site has been taken over by Huttopia in the last year or so, and as such no longer have any access to the Chateau and pool. To make up for this there is a new pool and pizza and drinks caravan (which closed end of August) nearby with seating and tables which was opened this summer. Near this area is an old barn which has been converted to a communal TV, games room. The reception was easy, and the receptionist spoke good English as did all other members of staff. In the reception there is a small selection of wine, cheese, milk etc, you can also order the next day’s bread/croissants, as well as a good selection of places to visit. As the site is in an orchard there are lots of apple trees around which are used to define the pitches which on a whole are flat and large and not far from the EHU points. The sanitary block needs refurbishment, that said there was plenty of hot water (very hot and powerful-read scalding hot and pressure washer power) it was always clean and tidy. There was plenty of sinks for washing up along with a couple of washing machines and dryers. There is also a large selection of safari tents and wheeled vans to hire, there is still a large selection of camping pitches. Other facilities crazy golf, basketball type court, play area with sand etc. Places of interest: - Cerza zoo about 10 min drive well worth a visit Chateau De Boutemont gardens at Ouilly La Vicomte just north of Lisieux about 20min drive. Naturospace butterfly house as well as Honfleur itself, about 40 min drive. Paleospace Odyssee a small prehistoric museum at Villers-sur-Mer, about 40 min drive. The nearby town of Cormeilles has a Carrefour super market as well as the normal small-town shops and tourist office and the Busnel Distillery.

Pitch with Electricity
We stayed for a week in August and really enjoyed the site. It's very peaceful and has well sized pitches spread across an apple orchard. Be aware that there are some older pictures of the site online - the swimming pool in the walled garden is no longer attached to the site however there is a new covered pool (with a smaller outdoor pool) on the site to replace it. The site is well run and English is spoken well by all of the staff we talked to. There is a bar and basic cafe facilities plus you can order fresh bread and other products daily. The toilet/shower blocks were always immaculate and the showers are hot, powerful, free and unlimited. Lots of washing up sinks, all undercover. Definitely recommended.

Pitch with Electricity
We stayed for 5 nights after a trip to Paris. After the Paris campsite the space of the pitch was very welcome. We really liked the focus on peace and quiet, with use of the kitchen facilities off limits after 10pm. The bar and pool were perfect, small and low key and not overly crowded. Great for children playing across the site. Only downer was the drain for the grey/black water was difficult to access with a camper - would be good to have just a drive over pad. Great being able to order bread etc. for morning and not very far to a supermarket for other supplies. Loved trying the local cider which we assume the camping orchard contributed to.

Relax and unwind in Normandy in the heart of the Auge region! In a lush green haven of peace in Normandy, Calvados- Normandie campsite is located in Calvados, between Pont-l'Evêque and Lisieux. This is a family-sized campsite where you can stay the way you like best: Set up your tent, caravan, or motorhome on a pitches in the apple trees of our orchard, by the woods or overlooking the meadows... the choice is yours. There are two washrooms with showers and sinks at your disposal and access to people with reduced mobility. Enjoy a range of facilities for all the family: table tennis tables, a tennis court, volleyball court, mini-golf, and playground. Indoors, there are bookshelves, a pool table, and a children's room at your disposal. It is lovely to stroll about the site, which has been prettily landscaped. Around the campsite there are also many footpaths and trails that you can explore on foot or by bike. Visiting the region's best sights, walks, traditional cuisine, swimming, and family activities all await you for active holidays in the heart of bucolic countryside. The Auge region is renowned for its delicious local produce and there are endless opportunities for you to sample it, such as the old-fashioned country market at Pont-l'Evêque every Sunday in July and August or the traditional market in Lisieux every Saturday morning. For history visit the Caen Memorial, the D-Day beaches, but also Bec-Hellouin abbey, the cultural centre of the West in the Middle Ages, and Bayeux for its world-famous tapestry. The Auge region has so much for you to discover during your stay at Calvados- Normandie campsite.
Nearby attractions
Lisieux is 16km away and a real must during your stay (visit on Saturday's for the market). An important centre of power in medieval times it grew over the centuries until, in 1944 the bombings of World War II destroyed two thirds of the town. As such, the huge Basilica of St. Thérèse of Lisieux (0033 2 3148 5508) is actually relatively new – completed in the 1950s – and, with more than two million visitors a year, is the second largest pilgrimage site in France, after Lourdes. Lisieux's Saint-Pierre Cathedral (0033 2 3162 0982), meanwhile, is a rare monument which did survive the 1944 bombardment, built in the Gothic style of the Île de France. The edge of town is also home to the moated Château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet (0033 2 3131 0003). From the campsite, the coast is also within easy reach with such spots as Deauville and Honfleur around 30–40km away.
Food and drink
There is a pretty little on-site crêperie open for lunch and evening meals. Fresh bread and pastries are available to order each day (place your order the evening before and it will be delivered to reception from the local bakery).
