Big Island Farms was the inspiration of its founder Gordon Goff, who came to the Big Island of Hawaii in 1989 in pursuit of a utopian dream to live holistically off the land in a tropical paradise. Over the subsequent 28 years, he established the Hamakua Ecology Center and then, in the mid 90’s, moved into tropical food forest farming which led to the development of an agricultural educational program focused on the fundamentals of permaculture and deep ecology. Throughout this period Goff built a team of like-minded, hard-working individuals who began creating a diversified organic farm and orchard by planting, propagating and nurturing tropical super foods such as Macadamia Nuts, Dwarf Coconuts, and a diverse range of tropical fruits, herbs, and medicinals alongside traditional Hawaiian crops and market gardens. Working closely with his son Alexander Goff and life partner Annick Dauphinais (who are co-founders of BIF), they have developed over 64 acres, planted in dense orchards and gardens. Big Island Farms is a thriving agricultural enterprise with a long-term goal to provide super mineralized, nutritionally superior organic products grown and processed on site to ensure the highest quality of nutritional value to the local and global market. Big Island Farms hosts many varieties of gardens. Currently, we have community market gardens, medicinal gardens, arid climate gardens, and permaculture food forests. Some of the plants you might find in our gardens include: Taro, Papaya, Banana, Cassava, Turmeric, Pineapple, Passion Fruit, Dragon Fruit, Plantains, Ginger, Gooseberry, Squash, Pigeon Pea, Lemons, Limes, Soursop, Eggplant, Hawaiian Chili Pepper, Jalepeños, Bell Peppers, Custard Apple, Sapote, Neem, Lychee, Mangosteen, Starfruit, Surinam Cherry, Bilimbi, Rambutan, Rollenias, Java Plum, Tropical Pumpkin, Jabuticaba, Ti, Hibiscus, Bamboo, and so much more! Learn more about this land: Aloha!  Mahalo, for your interest in visiting Big Island Farms located half way between the Historic Town of Honoka'a and the beautiful Waipi'o Valley. We are a permaculture based farm that hosts students from all over the world  interested in learning more about sustainability, permaculture farming, Hawaiian culture and much more.  During our off season, we open up the farm for you to visit and enjoy the beautiful Aina (land) and facilities.  Your stay with us could vary, from relaxing and reading a good book on one of our many decks or hiking through our upper orchards to find the on property waterfall that runs most of the year.   Our property is 65 acres with 50 acres of Macadamia Nut orchards and free roaming sheep and cows.  The lower 15 acres consist of many different gardens, a green house (please do not enter), multiple Food Forests, 8 Cabanas, 2 classrooms 4 showers, 3 composting toilets and a kitchen with common area.  Each cabana is screened in 360º with views, two bunkbeds (sleeps 4), air mattresses, (Bring your own Sleeping Bag/Pillows) shelves, clothes lines on outside and lockable doors. There is no electricity in the cabanas but there are power strips available in the common area.  The common area consists of a large deck with picnic tables, Wifi access (pw: pickalltheweeds), power strips for charging electronics, canopies for when it rains, a 2-burner hotplate for cooking, pots, pans, plates, utensils, cups, dry food storage and a full sized fridge with freezer. Please keep the area clean. We also offer morning Breakfast Basket options: Small basket $5 - 2 Papayas, 6 bananas, 2 cups of coffee.  Large basket $10 - 4 papayas, 10 bananas, morning coffee during your stay.  Please keep in mind the fruit may vary depending on what is ripe.  Coffee $1/ cup  In order to preserve water we utilize clean non-smelling composting toilets. We also have 4 hot water showers, 2 sinks and vanity areas. Please keep showers to 5 min or less, Mahalo.  If you come with a 4-wheel drive vehicle you are welcome to drive farther up on to the property and park closer to your cabana, just follow the Parking signs. We do not recommend you drive up with cars or low vehicles as the terrain is a bit rough, instead please park down in front in one of the parking spaces.  If you have any questions please don't hesitate to send us a message! Hope to see you soon! Aloha

The place is green and beautiful, hosts were amazing and welcoming, facilities were on point - off grid, yet you have access to warm water when showering, nice kitchen, and you’re very close to Waipio Valley!

Could’ve been better...
This place is overpriced considering the messy facilities, broken amenities (no power) and lack of hospitality. I love rustic camping, but this wasn’t priced accordingly. Sorry, but we didn’t get good vibes here. No one was there to greet us when we arrived and the few farm interns who were around weren’t friendly or really helpful. The place has great potential and looks like it may have at one point been run smoothly- but it’s now quite rundown.

Mixed Feelings
Overall, we loved our stay at the farm as it was a great rainforest experience. Spending time with the woofers (very nice people), living the reality of tropical forest, wet, sunny and flowered all at the same time was a great moment. We don't regret it. But, there are several things we didn't like. We were surprised not seeing hosts at all, even for a small greating. We had a nice welcome from the woofers, but we didn't heard about Annick or Baxter. Perhaps just walk by to say "hi" would have been a good idea. There were not even enough mattresses in the cabana : not sure someone cared about us coming that day. I sent a message few days before to order a basket, but I had no answer... and no basket. I told Annick one of the things that triggered my booking was the picture of Baxter on the swing with a nice cup of coffee. Without woofers, I couldn't even have smelt coffee. Regarding the cabanas, it does the job. I guess we were not in the high mosquito season because we didn't see many. Looking at holes and open space around the roof and the door, not sure the bug screen would stop anything anyway. Living in Québec - with lot of mosquitoes too - such screens would be a nightmare. Could be a good idea to improve the finish : pretty sure workers and hipcampers would appreciate. Bulkbeds are far from beeing comfortable too (and yes, I compare to other basic bulkbeds, as you can see in WMCA (Kauai), parks or other dorms). Ladders are not easy to use : please add a step. Bulkbeds are not even safe : no fence on the upper level : a simple plank would help. Mattresses are strange too. Green ones were not even even : a big bump on one side makes it almost impossible to use. Blue ones are much better, but barely fits the bed. If it would have been a plain wood plank under, we could have used our camping mattresses instead, it would have been almost more confortable and definitely cleaner. And last but not least, cleaning fees added over booking fees : 10$. It's a joke. I'm curious to understand what it's intended for. Showers were with a lot of hairs, sand and leaves. Sinks also with hairs. Composting toilets had no more sawdust or ashes left, and bowl was not clean. Let's be clear, we have no issues with dry toilets - we used such toilets half our stay in Hi - but ones you provide are not exactly "clean non-smelling composting toilets". And mattresses were covered of dust or stains, both sides. 10$ is not much compared to the price of the booking, but in our case, looks like a fraud. If it wasn't for the woofers, we definitely wouldn't have liked our stay as much. As mentioned earlier, we loved our experience, but considering all the "areas of improvements" above, we considered it overpriced. Our overall experience wasn't even half friendly as we felt it looking at the website and that was highly disapointing.

This place had horrible sleeping accommodations, we were provided with only 2 air mattresses for 3 people, one was not even functional. Good thing we had our own pads. The kitchen area was filthy and it was extremely difficult to find dishes to cook with though it was advertised that there was a complete kitchen. The showers were dark and dirty. There were no private areas for urinating, the composting toilets we were told were for number 2 only. So you were expected to pee out in the open. I will not recommend this place to anyone!

Does not meet website description.
Rustic cabanas and group kitchen left much to be desired. Slept on our own camp mats, as only one air mattress was functional for three people. Little privacy for peeing, composting toilets for #2 were fine. Shared kitchen area for hipcampers not stocked with dishes/utensils/pots as advertised on website. Unsanitary.
