A tents-only, dog-friendly campsite near Matlock and the Peak District

The tents-only, car-free camping field at Yew Tree Farm is open all year round. It’s one of the things that make this simple site a great place for those who love the outdoors. It provides a great-value place to pitch a tent whether you want to visit Derbyshire with your kids in the height of summer or come on your own in the off season. And whenever you come you’re welcome to bring the dog and allowed to have a campfire too. In fact, it’s encouraged with logs for sale on site. If you’re into back-to-basics camping there’s not much more you could ask for than what’s on offer here.

Yew Tree Farm offers pitch-where-you-please plots to its visiting campers. All are off grid and free form so you just find your own space in the field. It’s a flat one with views of neighbouring fields and, often, Yew Tree Farm’s cattle a-grazing. The car-free policy means you park the otherside of the fence and trundle your gear to your chosen pitch via wheelbarrow – but even the furthest corner is not too far away. The facilities, flushing loos, a pair of hot-water showers and washing-up sinks, are never too much of a hike either and kept nice and clean by helpful host Alicia.

If it’s a hike you’re after though, you won’t be disappointed here: there are plenty. You can strike out on a long walk into the surrounding Derbyshire countryside straight from this farm-based site or drive 12 miles into the Peak District National Park. In between there are plenty of places to visit, with something to suit all tastes. The limestone crags of Harboro’ Rocks will draw climbers one way with Matlock Farm Park attracting families in the other. The market town of Matlock and Crich Tramway Village are also nearby with Chatsworth House only 15 miles away. In summary, Yew Tree Farm is a simple campsite with simply loads to do nearby.

Dog friendly Yew Tree Farm offers hassle free, back-to-basics tent camping in the Derbyshire countryside, just a short distance from Matlock and the Peak District National Park. No vehicles are allowed on the field at any time, so after a day exploring the peaks and local highlights such as Bakewell and Chatsworth, you can let your little campers run wild without worry before sizzling up the campfire. There are a total of 10 pitches here, each suitable for tents only. Sorry, no tourers. We're just a 15 minute car journey to the Peak District National Park. Open all year round. We have toilets and showers open 24 hours, as well as an under cover dishwashing area. A number of pubs serving food and drink are local to us too.

Yew Tree Farm Camping
The toilets and showers were clean and well maintained. The field was big and meant everyone had their own area without any close by neighbours so had our own space. Could have a small campfire and allowed to bbq. Overall was an amazing stay with shops near by. As well as this, there were many hikes around to keep you busy.

Nearby attractions

Yew Tree Farm is three miles from the Derbyshire market town of Alfreton. It’s a countryside location with some nice walks in the area including to local pubs (see below). The lovely market town of Matlock is seven miles away. It offers a riverside setting, a boating lake and plenty of independent shops and eateries in historic buildings. Lumsdale Falls on the outskirts of town offer a lovely place for a walk. There are plenty more waterfalls and walks on offer within the Peak District National Park; the eastern edge of which is 12 miles away. Not far within its boundaries is Bakewell and nearby Chatsworth (15 miles from site). The house, gardens and wider estate, home of the Duke of Devonshire, are one of the Peak District’s most popular attractions. Another historic house, the Elizabethan Hardwick Hall, is also close enough for a visit (nine miles from the campsite). Crich Tramway Village (seven miles), formerly the National Tram Museum, offers a living history museum where you can see and ride heritage trams. And there’s more family fun at Matlock Farm Park a similar distance away. The Peak District and Derbyshire offer plenty of outdoor adventure including climbing, caving, walking, cycling and more. Some of the closest adventures to the campsite are at Harboro’ Rocks (13 miles) and nearby Carsington Water.

Food and drink

There are a few pubs within a short drive or long walk of site. The Greyhound is the closest, less than a mile up the road. Its garden makes it a good option for families with kids or dogs. Further up the same road (but still only a mile away) is The White Bear which offers lovely views over the valley. The Red Lion in Shirland is another good one to head for food, drinks and a beer garden. It’s just over a mile from site with a route on footpaths across fields from the site if you fancy the walk. The village also offers a shop for basics if you want to cook back on site. The Sitwell Arms in Morton, is a similar distance and often has live music and pizza nights. For more shops and eateries, head into Alfreton (three miles) or Matlock (seven miles).
