Romantic shepherd's hut glamping on a Worcestershire farm, with stunning views towards the Cotswolds and a storybook setting

You needn’t be nutty about history to appreciate the pretty Worcestershire village of Abberton. It’s been secreted away here in the countryside between Worcester and the Cotswolds since early Saxon times and has a marvellously timeless mixture of redbrick homes, thatched wooden barns and an 18th-century, stone church whose spire was removed after World War II to help pilots land at a local base. It’s just beyond, in the fields that spitfires once glided over, humming above the trees, that today, you’ll also find one of the village’s prettiest country homes – Abberton Shepherd’s Hut.

Accessed via a sun-dusted gravel driveway and nestled against broad, green bushes, Abberton Shepherd’s Hut is a truly remarkable glamping hideaway. Handmade entirely from one single ash tree, that blew down on the farm several years ago, it manages the supreme feat of looking beautifully traditional in its old orchard setting, whilst also subtly offering all the modern comforts of a luxury glamping holiday – plush en-suite facilities, a modern kitchen space and a balcony with views all the way to the stone folly at Bredon Hill in the Cotswolds.

What really sets Abberton Shepherd’s Hut apart though are the minute details that owner, Catriona Sutherland, has woven into every aspect of the hut. The continuity of the exposed ash wood throughout – the floorboards, the chunky table top, the bathroom shelves – grounds it in the setting, while the décor, crockery and wood-burning stove lend it all a farm-house type feel. It's a unique farmstay, so it would be remiss not to also take the opportunity to sample the local produce – fresh eggs, lamb, pork and beef (from the heard of Aberdeen Angus cattle, resident here for more than 20 years) are all available seasonally on request.

Should the view draw you out, and it surely will, there’s some 260-acres of the farm’s own land to explore (including egg collecting from the hens, which children will love). Head further afield to enjoy the Cotswolds and the Malvern Hills, or start from base and walk the three-mile, cross-country route to Inkberrow for a confusingly named pair of pubs: The Bulls Head and The Old Bull. The latter, a white, half-timbered, low-ceilinged affair claims to be the inspiration for the fictional ‘Bull’ in The Archers on BBC Radio 4 and is dotted with memorabilia. It’s a fitting find in this quaint, countryside location. As if pubs, villages and tiny shepherd’s huts like those around Abberton are so good its almost fiction. You’ll just have to discover the reality for yourself.

What really sets Abberton Shepherd’s Hut apart though is the minute details that owner, Catriona Sutherland, has woven into every aspect of the hut. The continuity of the exposed ash wood throughout – the floorboards, the chunky table top, the bathroom shelves – grounds it in the setting, while the décor, crockery and wood-burning stove lend it all a farm-house type feel. On sunny days, enjoying  your pre ordered breakfast outside on the balcony is utterly divine, feel free to use your barbeque or light up the firepit to keep warm in the evenings. This particular shepherds hut can sleep up to 4 guests, 2 adults in a double bed and 2 bunks (4ft 9 inches). If the children are bigger  they can sleep on a  cube mattress with a sleeping bag (also provided). We have WIFI for the shepherds too! - No pets allowed inside the hut - Max 2 adults and 2 children in unit

Shepherd's Hut
A wonderful winter glamping stay
We loved staying in Catriona's shepherd hut. After staying in a few huts this year. It was by far the nicest. It was very clean and well-kept. Everything inside the hut had its place. It made us feel very homely. The log burner was a highlight, as it was easy to use, kept the whole place warm and had plenty of firewood to keep it going for a long time. Catriona left extra wood in a wood store outside the hut, so even if we had managed to run out there was always more. Catriona has a gorgeous dog, which will come to visit you if you go and introduce yourself. We met her on the last day and we wish we had seen her on the first. Catriona gave us plenty of good local recommendations. We would recommend visiting the Malvern Hills, Worcester or just walking around the local countryside. We ate at the boot inn, which we would also recommend as a good English pub. While in the Malverns we visited the Kettle sings, which is a great coffee house with a beautiful view. Overall, this was an excellent stay, we will return in summer for sure!

Shepherd's Hut
Unique Shepherd’s Hut!
The Shepherd’s Hut was amazing. Catriona and Alec were fantastic hosts. The hut is beautifully situated with lovely views and is very peaceful. The detail in the building and decoration of the hut is unique. We loved that it was a working farm. The bunks worked really well for an 8 year old. Evie the dog was the highlight for our daughter - so gentle and smart. She came to visit every morning and kept us company throughout. We were sad to leave and will definitely be going back.

Shepherd's Hut
Our second time staying here and we plan to come back a third time! If you like your peace and quiet, this is the place to come. It has everything you would need. The detail that has gone into the place is nowhere like I’ve visited before. Recommend trips to Malvern Hills and The Cotswolds, all within a 45 minute drive from the hut.

The ultimate isolated safe escape in a unique shepherds hut situated on a 260 acre working farm in a small village called Abberton. This particular area of the country has very low rainfall and is famous for their fruit and veg because of the consistent great weather. This unique village has had no building increase for at least 50 years, it is stunningly English with a very friendly and welcoming community and the local farm shop hillers providing click and collect or delivery.
Nearby attractions
Manor Farm (where Abberton Shepherd's Hut is based) is located within a conservation area in the heart of the Vale of Evesham. The area is famous for its fruit, vegetables and agriculture and is a joy to explore on foot – the 260-acre farm itself is a good starting point or try walking some of the Wychavon Way long distance footpath. From the Abberton Shepherd's Hut balcony you're also able to see The Cotswolds in the distance and the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is also within easy driving range. There are 3 pubs and 2 farm shops within 2 miles of the site and its a little further to Inkberrow – home to The Old Bull pub (01386 792428), inspiration, apparently, for BBC Radio 4 series The Archers (the oldest running soap in the UK, if not the world). Visit the market town of Pershore and its beautiful abbey (01386 552071) and is particularly beautiful in spring. Finally, there are some world class Shakespearean sights only 30 minutes away in the unmistakably Tudor town of Stratford-upon-Avon, be sure to stop off at National Trust Coughton court on your way to enjoy the beautiful gardens.
Food and drink
Guests will recieve complimentary essentials, including: tea, coffee, butter, sugar, milk and jam. For everything else fresh from the farm, there's Hillers Farm Shop (01789 773057) a 10-minute drive away also provide click and collect– it has a maize maze, sandpit and miniature railway that the kids will love, plus a proper on-site restaurant.
