Idyllic summer camping on a Wiltshire farm with weekend barbecues, close to the Test Valley, New Forest and Stonehenge

The dream is to finish work on a Friday, whizz down the motorway to an idyllic rural campsite and be barbecuing dinner with a beer in hand by 7.30pm. The reality is often a little different. But rather than giving up on your wholesome dreams and buying dinner for the kids at a service station, why not book your spot at Farley Camping? It’s less than two hours out of London, close to the Test Valley, the New Forest and Stonehenge – and your campsite hosts are in charge of the barbecue.

Farley Camping is based on Parsonage Farm on the Wiltshire-Hampshire border where the Parsons family have been farming since the 14th-century. It’s home to The Traditional Meat Company, through which the latest generation of Parsons sell the farm’s well-reared wares – but not before a campsite’s worth of gourmet burgers and delicious pork sausages have been carefully put to one side. The family have set aside one huge 12-acre field for summer campers. It's tents and small campervans only and, as if manning the barbecue wasn’t enough, they’ll pitch a tent for you too if you like. Their five bell tents are pre-erected and kitted out with beds so all you need to do is arrive and throw the bedding in before tucking in to one of their juicy burgers.

Apart from the helping hand with provided tents and dinner (if you want it), life on site is all about getting back to basics and surrounding yourself in nature. Cows graze in the fields around you and there’s a woodland to explore on one side of the field. Facilities are temporary and simple; there are chemical toilets dotted about and a trailer of hot water showers. There’s a “free-form” pitching policy which works well when there’s oh-so-much-space. It’s a family atmosphere and it’s especially good for groups who want to camp together. With just 40 pitches in the vast tree-lined field, each has a massive third of an acre so come with friends and you literally have acres of space to yourselves. Campfires are welcome, well-behaved dogs are allowed and it’s generally a relaxed atmosphere.

There are two pubs within walking distance, even for little legs, both within a mile of site and accessed on routes that don’t touch roads. Choose the Hook and Glove if you want to play petanque or The Silver Plough for a game of skittles. It’s about all that’s needed for a weekend away but this idyllic taste of country life is also incredibly well-located so you might want to stay a while longer. The Test Valley, the edge of the New Forest and historic Salisbury are within a few miles of the farm. Stonehenge is just 20 minutes’ drive away and the south coast a little bit further.

Cool camping farmer style
Really enjoyed our stay at Farley. It’s a big field and everybody is well spaced out. We camped as a group and you can pitch together which is nice. It has new showers and toilets on-site and also a big tent for cover. Weekends they do burgers and other stuff that comes directly from the farm. About a 20 minute walk from the site is the pub, huge portions! Good beer and friendly locals. What more do you want.

Group camp, great space, pub nearby
Recently camped at Farley. Nice site, based on a farm just outside Salisbury. They have new facilities which included showers and toilets, which were very clean and nice. They also do catering at weekends. Would recommend and thinking on coming back later on in the season.

The camp had a nice family laid back vibe, but we were rather disappointed with the ‘lovely hot showers and toilets dotted around the site’ as quoted in their website. Although we expected the camping to be quite basic, we were not expecting 4 portaloos and two make shift showers. We arrived on the Saturday and by the Sunday afternoon the loos were vile with every single one being so full that there was faeces blocking each toilet! The bbq was also now what we expected. As it was on a working farm we thought that there were be a choice of different bbq items made with local meats, however all that was on offer was sausages served in a white bun, with a side of tortilla chips and a Greek salad. Adults meals were £10 for two sausages in a bun and the sides and the children’s were around £5. A little overpriced we felt.

We booked Farley camping after our Greece holiday fell through. We wanted quiet and no rowdy groups and this is what we got. The field itself is great. Even when busy there’s plenty of space and noise doesn’t really carry so still pretty quiet. Ground didn’t get too muddy even though it rain, a lot! Farley itself is a tiny village with a small play park and a fairly decent village pub. It’s also about 20 mins from Salisbury and the New Forest. Now onto the down side. There are 4 portaloos to service the whole place which at capacity is 40 pitches so approx 120-160 people! They are also chemical portaloos and they are only cleaned and emptied once a week! This just isn’t good enough. They were a health hazard, were filthy, didn’t flush and stunk. Unlucky for those that pitched their tents down wind! As for the showers there were 2 (not a 4 bay trailer as advertised). The showers were homemade wooden huts with a boiler put on the back. The water was either freezing cold or dangerously scalding hot. These were in no way good enough at all and we actually used to dread the morning shower. Also 2 showers for 120-160 people! Not really enough in my opinion. There’s one sink with cold water bolted onto the side of the showers for drinking water but no washing up facilities as such. The track up to the field is literally a dirt track so not suitable for very low cars and was extremely slippy when it rained a lot. We managed in our family car though but it was absolutely caked in mud by the end of the week. If they can get their act together and invest in some decent toilets and showers they will be onto a winner and I’ll come back but if the facilities stay as they are then there’s absolutely no chance I’ll visit again. Shame really.

Loved - On site 'shed shop', morning coffee was delicious,as were the freshly baked pastries. Barbecue night - tasty sausages from the farm with yummy salad. Great !! Lovely setting, very quiet & peaceful. Disliked - Portaloos were very bad!!! There were only 4 portaloos which were very full, some overflowing. The smell was horrendous & people were opening the door & then walking away in disgust. More attention needs to be paid to this.I have stayed on eco sites with compost toilets which are so much better. No smell & pleasant to use, these were not at all acceptable & made our stay at this, otherwise, lovely site, disappointing.

Great size pitches - well run campsite and the small shop selling coffee etc was a nice addition you don’t get at a lot of campsites. The toilets were not very nice and reminded me of a loo experience at Glastonbury festival - also only one water point and no washing up area.

Farley camping is based on Parsonage farm in Farley on the Wiltshire, Hampshire border, just outside the cathedral city of Salisbury. Parsonage farm has been farmed by the Parsons family since the 14th century, today it is arable and livestock farm and is home to the Traditional Meat Company. Farley camping is about enjoying all the natural world around us has to offer. The-camping field is set down a farm track completely away from all signs of civilisation. On-site we have a little shop serving up proper coffee and freshly baked pastries every morning. You can also purchase a selection of local produce such as our award winning burgers, made from our own herd of Aberdeen Angus grass fed cattle along with local free range eggs, free range chicken and rare breed handmade sausages. At weekends we light the charcoal and sear up some of the award winning meat the farm produces to feed the happy campers. Think big juicy gourmet burgers served in a brioche bun with homemade slaw, 12-hour smoked pulled pork shoulder and fiery buffalo chicken wings. New for the 2022 summer season, brand new glamping showers and toilets, more bell tents to hire. Huge new communal stretch tent, with tables and straw bale seating. Plus bigger and better shop.
Nearby attractions
There are plenty of walking opportunities, with two pubs within a mile's walk from site, both reached via local footpaths. The more adventurous can even walk the Clardendon Way, which starts from the next field and will take you all the way into Salisbury (five miles away). It's worth mooching about Farley village. The church and hospital were both built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1681 and there's a great little playground, cricket pitch and pub. The Test Valley is just down the road there are lots of options to try your hand at fly-fishing on day ticket and in the next village there's great coarse fishing at Walden Estate Fishery (01722 710101). For wildlife visit Bentley Wood (two miles away) or Wiltshire Wildlife Trust's, Blackmoor Copse. The historic city of Salisbury, and the northern edge of the New Forest National Park are only a 15-minute drive from site with Stonehenge just a little further (13 miles; usually around 20 minutes in the car). The south coast at Lepe or Bournemouth are also possible on day trips (both around 30 miles).
Food and drink

The farm's first business is The Traditional Meat Company. You can pre-order and buy meat and eggs, buy some in the campsite shop or enjoy some from the catered communal barbecue at the weekends. The shop also sells fresh coffee and pastries, milk, Purbeck Ice Cream and other local goodies. There are two pubs within a cross-country mile of site: The Hook and Glove (01722 712247) where campers get 10% off and there's a petanque court and resident Shetland pony and The Silver Plough (01722 712266) in Pitton – which has a skittle alley.
