Dog-friendly camping near Chichester and the West Sussex coast

A flat field, drinking water taps, showers and somewhere undercover to do the washing up… Lagnersh Camping in West Sussex has all the basics covered. And it’s friendly and laid back too. This is a place where you can have a campfire, bring the dog and camp with kids. Tents, campervans and motorhomes are all equally welcome and you can take your pick between electric and non-electric pitches. It’s hard to please all types of camper – but this site is certainly giving it a go. Its location also gives you plenty of options. It feels pretty rural here but it’s incredibly close to a lot. The thrills and spills of Bognor Regis are just down the road, the beach at Pagham is almost as close and Chichester is a 10-minute drive. It’s also a great base for events at Goodwood which is only six miles away.

The campsite is a wedge of green between farmer’s fields that’s sheltered by hedgerows. It’s a nice place to pitch a tent and, generally speaking, a peaceful place to hang out. Electric pitches are designated but otherwise this is a pitch-where-you-please site and one where you can park up next to your tent. Folk tend to opt for the edges of this six-acre site which leaves kids to run free in the middle. There’s plenty of room for football and cricket and a little kids’ play area too. From a practicality point of view, the site is low-key but well set up. There’s a kitchen shed that offers a handy electric kettle, fridge and freezer as well as washing up sinks. There are unisex flushing toilets and hot-water showers in converted containers.

Once your ablutions are complete it’s time to head out for the day – if you can drag your kids away from their new-found friends. The promise of ice cream at the seaside might tempt them. Nearby Bognor is the obvious choice but if its prom is too bustling for you, there’s West Wittering and Bracklesham Bay, both 10 miles away. And then there’s inland West Sussex which is perhaps more well to do: there's Chichester and Arundel with their cathedrals, motorsports at Goodwood and plenty of glorious Sussex countryside as well.

Grass Pitch with Electric Hook-up
Nice, flat, level site.
The site is really flat and level. The young lady who checked us in was very welcoming and friendly, and gave good advice. The site seemed quite busy, but it seems many of the pitches are occupied by long term or permanent residents, and we were the only holidaymakers there for the first day (but it was late September). The road it is on has no pavement, so walking the ¼ mile or so to the nearest bus stop might not be great for families, and there wasn't really a shop in walking distance. Other than that I liked the site and would stay there again.

Grass non electric
Spent another 3 nights here but this time the site was almost full. Went to visit Marwell Zoo and when I came back someone was in my spot so I had to move... Overall is a nice , clean and beautiful camp site and I'll definitely come back next year.

Non-Electric Pitch
On arrival, there was no one to check us in. We drove in to see that the majority of people staying there were there long term. The toilet block looked very run down as did the play park. We decided not to stay as it did not feel secure.

Nearby attractions

There is a gate straight from the Lagnersh Camping out onto footpaths that’s handy for local, countryside walks. The campsite is less than three miles from the beach at Bognor Regis. This classic seaside destination offers a shingle and sand beach and all the usual seaside fun: buckets and spades, amusement arcades and mini golf. A similar distance from the campsite is the seaside village of Pagham where there are plenty of facilities and a quieter place to swim in the sea off shingle shores. It’s also got an RSPB Nature Reserve at its harbour which is a little further away (seven miles). Bracklesham Bay, East and West Wittering are other nearby beaches where watersports, including surfing, are an option and you can look out for fossils at Bracklesham Bay too. The city of Chichester with its cathedral and Roman history is four miles from the campsite. Chichester Harbour offers more natural highlights with boat trips available from Emsworth (14 miles). The edge of the South Downs National Park is a few miles to the north. On the edge of it is the country estate at Goodwood, famous for the Goodwood Revival and Goodwood Festival of Speed, is six miles from the campsite. Arundel with its cathedral and castle is also on the edge of the national park and 12 miles away.

Food and drink

There’s a pub, The Royal Oak, about half a mile from the campsite which serves a seasonally-changing menu. Another nearby option is The Walnut Tree in Runcton (two miles) which has a beer garden and a varied menu including gluten-free options. The edge of Bognor Regis, with all its shops and eateries, is just down the road and there are small convenience stores about two miles away including Oaksmeres Farm Shop and Refillery for local produce. The closest big supermarket is three miles away.
