Laid-back dog-friendly, family camping near Padstow

Tregella Place Camping is fantastically situated in countryside close to Cornwall’s north coast. It’s less than two miles from Padstow and less than three from a sandy beach. And, like all good Cornish campsites, this place is as laid back as you’d like it to be. It’s a pitch-where-you-please campsite in a big old field with lovely rural views. At weekends, there’s live music in the early evenings, a bar in a bus and a food truck which all help give the place a family festival feel. It’s a simply lovely place to hang out at in between days exploring the fishing villages and beaches of the north Cornish coast.

Facilities on site are contemporary and clean: hot showers and flushing loos in a neat little block with dishwashing sinks just outside. There’s a shared fridge freezer and somewhere to charge phones – handy on a site where pitches are all off grid. These little luxuries, plus the handy food and drink on site, make this a place where you could spend a week as easily as a weekend. It also sets the site apart from some of its nearby neighbours. There’s no shortage of campsites in this part of Cornwall but not all of them are as good as this one – so make sure if you book at Tregella Place Camping, that this is where you end up. Some are similarly named.

As the campsite is pretty much slap-bang in the middle of the north Cornish coast, it’s a good base to explore from. Apart from foodie Padstow itself which, at less than two miles away, is walkable for most people, there’s Newquay half an hour to the south-west and Port Isaac to the north-east – with plenty of beaches in between. The area is famous for seafood, surfing and, of course, Rick Stein whose closest establishment, The Cornish Arms, is only a mile from your pitch. There’s also walking on the South West Coast Path and inland on Bodmin Moor. You can head out to sea on a boat trip or inland on a traffic-free cycle trail. And after all that, the site’s sunset music sessions are a great way to finish the day.

Tregella Place Camping offers a peaceful retreat in the quiet Cornish countryside. With lovely farmland views, this rural park provides a satisfying stay while still being close to necessary amenities. You can easily pick up fresh eggs from a nearby chicken farm, and a supermarket and a pub serving food are just a short drive away. Food enthusiasts will appreciate the gastronomic hotspot of Padstow, which is only a 10-minute drive from the park and offers a variety of highly rated restaurants, coffee shops, and bars, including those helmed by chef Rick Stein. If you enjoy walking, you can take a scenic route through the cornfields to reach Padstow. On-site, you'll find a bar housed in a converted bus, serving Cornish beers and ciders, as well as live music on weekends. During high summer, there is a pop-up street kitchen and a communal picnic area for family dining. The facilities at Tregella Place Camping are pristine, including a shower block with family-size showers, changing areas, electric points for charging devices, hairdryers, and a washing-up area. The park also offers direct access to the South West Coast Path and is located near the Camel Trail cycle path for those who enjoy cycling adventures. Please note live music is only during the summer holidays! Food truck is also only available in peak season.

Peaceful basic field
Great Spot, stopped beginning of October and it was very peaceful and quiet. Basic field, really nice toilet and shower block. Would have benefited from a washing up station. Felt surrounded by nature, two wrens flew into my van in the morning, while I was laying in bed which was lovely

Great location and good facilities
The campsite was overall lovely. The kids and I enjoyed our time there. It is a good location (a bit exposed to the wind which can't be avoided in that area) as it is close to many wonderful beaches and close to Padstow and its facilities. The (female - we only used that one so can't comment on the male one) shower block is fairly new looking had 4 toilets and 3 showers, two sinks, all kept clean despite the bad weather, a hand dryer and plug sockets. The toilets were in good condition and so were the showers although the showers only lasted a few seconds and the shower doors occasionally didn't close so my kids struggled lock the door. There was an outdoor freezer we could use and a dishwashing area outside the shower block. Also drinking water tap to refill your water. We didn't get to use the bar/food facilities but it looked great with some live music on some days. I'd definitely go back. Thank you.

Nearby attractions

Padstow harbour is two miles from the campsite. You can drive there in a few minutes or walk there in about half an hour. There’s a little museum in town plus opportunities for boat trips including the ferry over to Rock on the other side of the Camel Estuary. Padstow sits on the South West Coast Path and at the end of the Camel Trail so walking and bike rides are easy from here too. There’s bike hire available in town, if you haven’t got your own, and The Camel Trail provides a largely traffic-free 18-mile route to Bodmin Moor. From the campsite, it's under three miles to the closest beach, Trevone Bay, where there’s a mixture of sand and rock pools. It’s a similar distance to Treyarnon Bay where there’s a natural tidal pool you can swim in at low tide. For a day off the beach, Camel Creek Adventure Park is just four miles from the campsite. Newquay is half an hour’s drive along the coast in one direction, Port Isaac half an hour in the other (both 14 miles).

Food and drink

There’s a bar and a food van on site at Tregella Place Camping serving on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays so if you don’t feel like cooking, you don’t have to go anywhere at all. Breakfast muffins are available in the mornings and homemade burgers are on offer in the evening. There are occasional guest caterers too. Off site, the closest place for a meal out is The Cornish Arms, a mile down the road. It’s the closest of eight Rick Stein-owned eateries in the Padstow area – and a good one; a Cornish inn serving woodfired pizzas as well as a menu of good pub food with a focus on seasonal local produce. In town (two miles), you can choose from The Seafood Restaurant for fine dining and Rick Stein’s fish and chip shop by the quay (among others). The Old Custom House is a non Rick Stein option on the quayside that’s good for food and there are plenty of others to choose from in the town. Trevisker’s Kitchen, a mile from site, is a cafe at a nearby garden centre that does good food. It’s Sunday carvery comes recommended by your hosts as does Padstow Farm Shop (two miles) if you want to stock up on food to cook yourselves or for picnics. The shop has its own butchery and a deli counter offering great sausage rolls, pasties and salads. There are independent shops in Padstow and there’s a big Tesco on the outskirts of town, just a mile from Tregella Place.
