The signpost to show you’ve arrived at this site in mid-Cornwall is a simple, hand painted one and the name it announces is pretty simple too: The Camping Field. It’s a fitting welcome to a campsite that’s as simple as it sounds – just five-acres of mowed grass with a trio of loos, taps and a few picnic benches scattered about.
With such simple facilities, this place won’t be for everyone but if you like to think of yourself as a “proper” camper or are self sufficient enough to just want somewhere to park up that’s bonafide, head for The Camping Field. With views across countryside to the nearby nature reserve at Helman Tor and a location that’s within easy reach of The Eden Project, you’re unlikely to be disappointed. In addition, owner Richard, will help you feel at home. This former dairy farmer and proper West Country-man runs a laid-back campsite where pretty much anything goes. Tents, campervans and caravans are all allowed as are campfires, kids and dogs.
This is an uncomplicated place where you can enjoy the simple pleasures of fresh air, plenty of space, campfires and starry nights – but it’s also well located. The Saints Way trail passes right by the site and there are walks up Helman Tor and in and around the nearby Luxulyan Valley. These are lovely local sights but it’s also incredibly conveniently positioned for visits to one of Cornwall’s biggest attractions, The Eden Project, whose stand-out biomes are just five miles away. For beaches, the closest are on the south coast, just eight miles and a 20-minute drive away at Par, for example, where dogs are welcome or Polkerris which is better for families. The north coast and its surf and seafood is well within reach too – Newquay and Padstow, both about a half-hour drive from here.
