A shepherd’s hut hideaway for two in rural Sussex

The Baker’s Hut is a neat-as-a-pin shepherd’s hut in the Sussex countryside near Steyning and the South Downs National Park. It stands alone in a glade among five acres of woodland and gardens offering a peaceful place to relax that’s surrounded by nature but not too far off the beaten track. And while there’s no denying that shepherd’s huts have a rustic appeal, this one is anything but inside. The comfort it provides is akin to a hotel room – albeit one with a log burner in the corner and a fire pit for nights under the stars outside the front door.

There’s an en suite bathroom with a flushing loo and a hot shower. The bed is kingsized, made up with quality linen and your towels are provided too. There’s space for a sofa and a Smart TV mounted on the wall. It’s well set up for self-catering stays with a kitchenette featuring a proper oven, a fridge and a microwave. On arrival here, the smell of freshly-baked bread will welcome you thanks to the loaf that’s been left by your hosts. There's eggs from their hens, honey from their bees and a few other goodies included too ensuring you're well set up for breakfasts during your stay. Food is an important part of what's on offer. In fact, The Baker’s Hut is a complement to their main business, The Artisan Bakehouse, a farmhouse cookery school in whose grounds you’ll be staying.

If you time it right, your stay might coincide with a bread-making workshop or another of the events they sometimes host here. This place is certainly good for foodies with great pubs, farm shops and vineyards all within easy reach. It’s also great for walking and for generally spending time enjoying the countryside. The River Adur meanders past a field or two away, the South Downs rise up a couple of miles to the south and the coast is just beyond them. There are plenty of stately homes, historic sites and pretty villages. The Baker’s Hut is a good base from which to explore them all – and an equally good place in which to relax and do nothing at all.

Nearby attractions

The Baker’s Hut is in the grounds of The Artisan Bakehouse in Sussex countryside that’s great for walking, cycling and horse riding. The River Adur passes close by with a riverside footpath along it and the South Downs National Park is a couple of miles away. There are plenty of footpaths and bridleways in the national park, the best of which is the South Downs Way National Trail which runs along the top of the Downs. The river offers opportunities for taking to the water by paddleboard or kayak and there’s kayak hire available nearby from the Kayak Coach. Steyning is the closest town (three miles) and is a pretty place for a wander with shops, eateries and historic buildings. The south coast is the other side of the Downs with Worthing (12 miles) the closest place to reach the beach. Brighton is just 14 miles away. For wildlife, head to Knepp, the rewilded country estate that’s seven miles up the road for a safari tour or perhaps head for the Arundel Wetlands (17 miles). Arundel also has a castle and an impressive cathedral.

Food and drink

One of the highlights of a stay in the Baker’s Hut is the range of food and drink on offer both here on site and in the area. A welcome hamper gives you the chance to try the bread that’s made on site and, time your stay right, and there might just be a supper club taking place, a bread-making workshop or a cookery masterclass (all would need to be booked in advance). There’s a pub serving good food, The Fountain, a mile up the road in Ashurst. You can drive there in two minutes or take a long walk (during the day) along the river to get there. Steyning (three miles) also has a choice of pubs and an Italian restaurant, Mamma Mia’s. The area has lots of vineyards nearby with Wiston (seven miles) one of the closest. Visit for a tour and tasting and stay for lunch in the recommended Chalk restaurant which uses seasonal Sussex produce in its menus. Springs Nursery (six miles) offers the chance to pick your own fruit and has a great farm shop and a cafe too; breakfasts there are a particular highlight. And if you fancy breakfast by the beach, your hosts recommend heading for Grub and Gumption in East Preston (15 miles).
