Back-to-basics camping with views of the sea in walking distance of St Agnes

With views of a tin mine and the Atlantic Ocean in one direction and rolling countryside in the other, Sunny Corner Campsite is as rooted in North Cornwall as campsites come. It’s within walking distance of both the surf at Trevaunance Cove and the village of St Agnes where pasties and cream teas are among the local treats on offer. And the campsite itself offers something typically Cornish too – a warm and friendly welcome with a laid-back approach to life on site.

This simple site occupies five acres in the teeny-tiny village of Wheal Kitty, overlooking the chimney stacks of the Wheal Kitty mine. It’s a flat field with a pitch-where-you-please policy and simple facilities that are just enough when you’re planning on spending all day on the beach: hot showers, flushing loos and handy USB charging ports to keep your phone topped up. It’s worth noting that campfires are a no-no here, but barbecues are a-okay as long as they are kept well off the grass. The on-site kids’ play area makes it family friendly and dogs are welcome too.

The South West Coast Path passes nearby and offers the perfect place for walkies, whether you’ve brought the dog or not. You can use it to head out on a long hike exploring more of this part of Cornwall’s tin-mining heritage or just to get to the beach. The closest is Trevaunance Cove, a mixture of shingle and sand which is ripe for swimming and surfing. At low tide there are opportunities for rock-pooling too and you can even walk round to another beach at Trevellas-Porth cove – but keep an eye on the tide. A bigger beach at Perranporth is about four miles from site and Newquay is seven miles beyond that. The arty harbour town of St Ives with its galleries and shops is about the same distance south west. If you want to explore the North Cornish coast on a back-to-basics camping holiday, you’re unlikely to find a base that’s better than this Sunny Corner.

Tin mines, cool coves and steam railways… Sunny Corner is a top pick for laidback outdoor breaks on Cornwall's north coast. Small and well-maintained, this campsite is in a five-acre field on the edge of the village of St Agnes with stunning sea views, spacious pitches and easy access to all the village's amenities (about 10 minutes' walk away). Families certainly aren’t forgotten here, as the site is well-equipped for all ages. There’s a spacious play area where the kids can blow off steam and make new friends in a safe and welcoming environment. And in terms of practicalities, Sunny Corner has functional toilets and showers for guests, all of which are well-maintained and a short walk away from the pitches. Sunny Corner is in the area of St Agnes known as Wheal Kitty, so you’ll only be a short five-minute walk from the historic buildings of the Blue Hills Tin Mine, where there’s a small exhibition about Cornwall's industrial past. Trevaunance Cove, a spectacular lifeguarded beach, and the more secluded Trevellas Cove are around a 10-minute walk away, while other coastal havens like Perranporth can be reached in as little as a 10-minute drive. Food on the brain too? Don’t worry, as you’ll be well-set with a number of family-friendly cafés, pubs, restaurants and a couple of small supermarkets in the village that are easy to reach on foot within roughly 10-15 minutes.

schoon sanitair

What a great campsite! Huge pitches, loads of space to play, beautiful location, spotless facilities. We’ve always been to very basic campsites before and although this is said to basic, the toilets, showers and washing up facilities were really well built, with plenty of loo roll etc. It’s only a short walk down to the village. Highly recommended 👍

Rain
There are too little facilities for the amount of campers. However, they are well maintained. The welcome is impersonal, if the reception is open from 11am to 2pm be there. In addition sunny.... Rather very windy and bad weather. The field is well maintained then, though.

We’ve just spent 5 nights at Sunny Corner, well kept site, plenty of space in the centre of the fields for kids to play / to play with the dog etc, basic clean facilities, and lovely and quiet. Would definitely recommend.

Sunny Corner Campsite is two large 5 acre fields with great sea views. Sunny Corner is a ten minute walk to Trevaunance Cove and Trevellas Cove and has direct access to the North Cornish Coast footpath. The village is a ten minute walk with bakers, butchers and convenience stores and many great pubs and restaurants.
Nearby attractions

Sunny Corner Campsite is situated on the north Cornish coast, a ten-minute walk from the village of St Agnes and a 10-minute walk from the beach at Trevaunance Cove. Breakers Surf School offers surf lessons on the beach. The South West Coast Path passes close by the site and offers the best local walks with ever-changing views of the coastline. Arty St Ives is half an hour’s drive south-west and lively Newquay is about the same distance in the other direction along the coast.

Food and drink

From your pitch at Sunny corner Campsite it’s a walk of about half a mile to the closest places to eat and drink in St Agnes. Genko Cafe and Cafe Q are two recommended options for breakfasts, coffee, cake, cream teas and lunches on the way to the beach – and there’s a beach cafe on the sands too. Fissions Fish and Chip Shop comes recommended and for pubs there’s a choice between the traditional St Agnes Hotel (known to locals as The Aggie) or the more modern bar/restaurant The Taphouse. There’s also a butchers, bakers, fruit and veg shop and a general convenience shop in the village.
