Yurt glamping between Chesterfield and Matlock in Derbyshire

Glamp with views of rolling Derbyshire countryside and Chesterfield’s most famous landmark at Spire View Yurts. As the name of this small glamping site suggests, that landmark is a church spire; the very crooked spire of St Mary and All Saints. This medieval tower, which looks like something from a fairytale, points wonkily towards the sky some five miles away. It’s just visible between the folded fields that are typical of Derbyshire and the Peak District; filled with sheep and stone walls. You can ponder this peaceful scene as you sit on the deck outside your yurt or, perhaps, sink into the warm waters of your private hot tub.

Two of the three yurts on this site have those. All of them provide a comfy place to stay, fully furnished for four or five, warmed by a log burner, each with its own bathroom. That little luxury means there’s no sharing of facilities beyond the communal kitchen which has a few luxuries of its own. There’s a full-sized oven for example, and a Nespresso machine for your morning coffee. There’s a pizza oven too which you can hire for the cost of the wood you’ll need to fire it up. While bookings for individual yurts are welcome, these facilities make Spire View a perfect place for a group glamping getaway; one where three families, couples or groups of friends holiday together. There’s space to spread out and room to come together too. It’s perfect for a celebratory stay.

If you’re here for one of those you might be content to stay right here on site, spending time with friends and family, gazing at that view. But the scenery might also give you the urge to get out and explore. The countryside here is just a taste of what lies to the west; the Peak District National Park. Within it there’s walking, cycling and outdoor adventure plus the stateliest of homes, Chatsworth House. That’s only 20 minutes’ drive away. The twin towns of Matlock and Matlock Bath are not as far as that. And closer still is Chesterfield – with your chance to get an even better view of that crooked spire.

Brilliant reception from Jayne. Beautifully sited yurt. Me and my wife to be have came back completely relaxed and such an amazing weekend. Facilities are spotless and everything is catered for. An additional extra but we'd definitely recommend the scones! Hopefully we'll return there again soon.

The yurt was beautiful and the attention to detail including welcome cupcakes and lemonade was very sweet. The hot tub was a lovely extra and we also made use the pizza oven and communal kitchen, which is amazingly well kitted out.

On a beautiful rural site near the village of Ashover, discover these three yurts positioned in the Derbyshire countryside, Spire View Yurts. Earning the name from the wonderful far-reaching views of Chesterfield’s unique twisted spire atop the Church of St Mary and All Saints, Spire View Yurts lie in Northedge and are comprised of Silver Birch, Mighty Oak and Horse Chestnut, the former two sleeping five guests and the latter hosting four, allowing a group of up to 14 to enjoy a unique glamping experience.
Nearby attractions

Spire View Yurts is almost equidistant between the market towns of Chesterfield (five miles) and Matlock (six miles) so a good base from which to visit both. In Chesterfield, you can get a closer view of the crooked church spire that gives the glamping site its name. It stands 228 feet tall, over the Church of St Mary and All Saints. You can also visit the independent traders of the town’s Market Hall and perhaps wander The Shambles for a coffee. Matlock (seven miles) and neighbouring Matlock Bath (eight miles) are popular towns connected by the River Derwent. On the outskirts of Matlock you can hop aboard one of the heritage trains of Peak Rail and from Matlock Bath you can jump aboard a cable car to be whisked to the Heights of Abraham, a 60-acre country park with show caverns and more. Gulliver’s Kingdom, a kid’s theme park, is also nearby. Crich Tramway Village is another popular attraction in the area (nine miles from the glamping site). For more active adventures, perhaps head to Carsington Water (14 miles) for watersports or into the Peak District National Park. Its boundary is only about eight miles from the site and there’s plenty of walking, cycling and climbing opportunities within it. Plus places to visit including the magnificent Chatsworth House and its wider estate (13 miles), the town of Bakewell (also 13 miles) and medieval Haddon Hall (nine miles).

Food and drink

You can pre-order local breakfast hampers, afternoon teas and charcuterie boards directly from your host – perfect if you are celebrating a special occasion on site. There’s also the option to hire the  pizza oven and to buy ready made dough and tomato sauce for your own on-site pizza night. Otherwise the closest place to pick up supplies for your stay are a convenience store in Clay Cross (two miles), the village shop, Stamp, in Ashover (just over two miles) or from a couple of nearby farm shops. There’s Marsh Green Farm Shop (two miles) which has a butchery and deli counter as well as a cafe, and Stretton Hall Farm Shop (also two miles) which offers a tearoom too. Chesterfield (five miles) has lots of independent shops and stalls in the town’s Market Hall and Market Place as well. For a meal out, Ashover offers a choice of pubs including The Black Swan and The Crispin Inn, both traditional country pubs with menus to match. The Miner’s Arms is a little further but it’s family run and in beautiful surroundings in the village of Milltown (four miles away).
