If you want to impress the kids on your next British staycation how about booking a stay in one of the American school buses at Southwinds Campsite this summer? You’ll surf Cornish waves by day and sleep a converted skoolie after a campfire at night. Summer holidays don’t get much cooler than that. And it’s all thanks to Roarsome Adventures who have timetabled their three iconic all-American buses to stop off for the summer at Southwinds Campsite.
These moveable beasts; the Original Yellow Bus, the smaller Magic Green Bus and The Stargazing Red Bus, are styled inside like Alpine ski chalets. They’re all dark wood cladding and faux fur throws with cosy bunk beds; just right for sunkissed, salt-skinned, wave-weary kids to clamber into after a long day on the beach and a campfire dinner. Meanwhile, you can stay out to enjoy the last embers as the stars come out overhead, ready to do it all again tomorrow – after a delicious breakfast at Beach Farm, the cafe next door. Though if you want to cater for yourself, each of the buses has simple cooking facilities inside, as well as a barbecue and a fire pit outside. Toilets and showers are shared and a short walk away.
Southwinds, where the buses are parked up, is under a mile from Polzeath beach where there are daily surf and fitness lessons on the beach. There’s also paddleboard hire and boat trips around the coast. Head out to spot dolphins or to visit Padstow or picturesque Port Isaac. Polzeath sits between the two. It’s a great location on the north Cornish coast; a foodie hotspot with fresh fish, pasties and Cornish ice cream on the menu. This Roarsome Adventure has all the ingredients of a classic British staycation with the style of the Swiss Alps and some old-school stateside cool thrown in. Your kids are going to love it and you might just find that you do too.
