Eco-friendly, campfire-friendly, family-friendly camping on the farm – plus Somerset's famous Wookey Hole caves on the doorstep

The world famous Wookey Hole Caves, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), has been used by humans for over 45,000 years. But it’s only in the last couple of decades that the limestone caverns have also prompted an array of other attractions. Wookey Hole’s website now points you to the 4D cinema experience, pirate adventure golf, Valley of the Dinosaurs and a scale model village, among many others. The latter replica doesn’t show a goat farm anywhere on the model. But, back in the real world, it’s little over two miles from the caves that you’ll find one – a sweet little smallholding on the edge of Wookey Village. And the farm boasts a cracking pint-sized campsite too.

Established by friendly proprietors Ian and Sarah Davies, the two-and-a-half-acre site is split across pair of adjasent meadows; the first with a recycing bin, firepit and picnic table at each of the shrub-lined pitches, while in the second you can just pop your tent where you please in the open grassy space bordered by the River Axe (bring your own firepit if you wish to have a campfire).

Sarah and Ian take pride in offering a basic and sustainable camping experience. Loos are are clean and well kept but of the composting kind and there are no showers on the site at all. You’ll have to take a dip in the river if you’re truly desperate for a wash – idling its way lazily past the site it's great for paddling and dam building, while tire swings hang from a couple of large oak trees on the bank.

Yet while Sarah and Ian have worked hard to craft the perfect family campsite, there’s no denying that their first love at Wookey Farm is still the animals. Their herd of near-100 goats – curious British Toggenbergs with white stripes down their faces and a tendency to nibble toggles off your overcoat – is milked twice a day (watch in the milking parlour at 8:30am or 5pm). There’s also a pair of Gloucester Old Spot pigs, a clutch of egg-laying hens and a bashful donkey named Mr Pickles who, once befriended, is exceedingly fond of a rub behind the ears.

In summer, Sarah supplements the farm’s usual cheeses with homemade halloumi – a superb treat when toasted over the campfire – as well as goats’ milk ice-cream, which is only available to campers and tastes all the sweeter as a result. Their other cheeses are also sold at markets around Somerset, including in nearby Wells on most Wednesdays. It’s well worth popping to the tiny city anyway to marvel at the grand gothic-style cathedral before venturing into the Mendip Hills for a walk. It’s also a 15-minute drive to Glastonbury and just over half an hour to the Somerset coast. That’s all if you get past the endless list of attractions at Wookey Hole, of course. Adventure golf anyone?

Large grass pitch - campsite 1
A really lovely site. Sheltered, generous pitches, clean facilities, relaxed bar on site despite the small size. Great campfire spots. All in all a lovely place to stay.

We had pitch 15 and loved it!! Very sheltered surrounded by trees. The toilets were clean and liked that the toilet included a little seat for our 3 year old! Very thoughtful.

Lovely site
Lovely site, great little shop! We were only here for one night as a stop over but would come again. Only thing was no showers, but was okay for less than 24 hours!

Small grass pitch for tents only - campsite 1
Campsite 1- A lovely secluded tent pitch in a nicely kept field. ( This is the better field out of the 2 to camp in) Nice to have the donkeys nearby and the goats to visit in the barn. A very child friendly campsite with lots of areas to play. Also has craft activities set up outside the farm shop to keep them entertained. Only a 10 minute walk away is a nice, little pub that sells reasonably priced food and drink. Only negative is that the compost toilets can be abit smelly!

Wookey Farm campsite is situated near the famous Wookey Hole Caves, in the sister village of Wookey. The level 2.5 acre site is part of a small family-run goat farm, where children can pet the animals and campers of all ages can learn about the day-to-day running of a dairy goat farm. We also have lambs, donkeys, rare-breed pigs and piglets at certain times of the year. The site is quiet and spacious with a large grass area in the middle and has stunning views of the Mendip Hills. The river Axe runs through the next field and campers are welcome to paddle and relax along the banks of the river. What we offer: - we welcome tents, caravans, campervans, motorhomes, trailer tents - mains drinking water - chemical disposal point - electric hook-ups on the larger pitches - compost loos - well behaved pets are welcome - campfire areas next to pitches and logs for sale - rope swings by the river - individual recycling bins on pitches - a round house where campers can shelter from any downpours - a farm shop selling our products (goats cheese and goat meat, lamb and pork), essentials, alcohol and gifts - electric car charging point - 3 village pubs - the Wookey Hub (cafe and small shop in the village) - village church - suggested walks
Nearby attractions

It's 2½ miles to Wookey Hole (01749 672243; Wookey Hole and Wookey Village are separate places), where there really is a wealth of attractions: The Wizards Play Castle, the Mystic Fairy Garden, the Penny Arcade, the Cave Museum, Wookey Model Village, Pirate Adventure Golf and 4D cinema, to name but a few. Plus, of course, the caves, which are by far the most deserving point of interest. The full extent of the cave system is still unknown, but around 4,000 metres, including 25 chambers, having already been explored, and include one cave noted for 'the Witch of Wookey Hole' – a human-shaped stalagmite that legend says is a witch turned to stone by a monk from Glastonbury. Talking of which, it's 5½ miles to mystical Glastonbury itself, where a walk up to Glastonbury Tor is practically mandatory if you're visiting the area. Wells is also on the doorstep – daily cathedral tours except on Sundays and a regular market – and, just north of the town, the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty begins.

Food and drink

Visit the site's farm shop to buy their own produce, including their excellent goats cheeses, as well as goat meat, lamb and pork, or head to one of the three pubs in the village. The Ring of Bells (01749 678079) is closest (easy walking range) and is a lovely old spot with white-washed walls, low beamed ceilings and open fires. There is also a good café and small shop – The Wookey Hub (01749 672784) – which comes highly recommended by the campsite owners and is also an easy walk away in Wookey Village. Wells' (3½ miles from the campsite) has a Farmers' Market every Wednesday and a regular market on Saturdays.
