Adults-only camping on a simple Somerset site, just two miles from Cheddar Gorge

Welcome to the recently upgraded Paddocks Glamping!

When you think of Somerset your mind likely conjures up images of Cheddar cheese, Cider, Glastonbury or even strawberries! That’s right, Strawberries! These delicious, juicy red fruits are right on the doorstep.

The Cheddar Valley has been supplying the nation with strawberries for generations, and while not all of the strawberry fields have survived, there are still plenty of places to pick up a punnet or two.

‘The Paddocks’ is a retired strawberry farm that is now home to a magnificent glamping site! Situated on the southside of the Mendip Hills between the historic village of Draycott and the awe-inspiring Cheddar Gorge, this place boasts amazing views over the Somerset levels with an abundance of walks in the surrounding area of ‘Outstanding Natural Beauty’.

There are just two pitches here which contribute to the privacy and natural calm of the place. Each dome tent is situated on a raised decking where you can enjoy some home comforts such as a double bed, gas BBQ, fire pit and lots of cosy furnishings. Utilities include mains power, water, a communal barn (with wood burning stove, microwave, fridge, freezer, toaster, kettle and washing up facilities) toilet block and shower room with a heated floor.  It’s a great spot for couples to enjoy a relaxing and romantic break in rural surroundings or for small groups of friends to get together, with exclusive hire a viable option. There is even a large natural pond that you can sit next to and enjoy reading a book, or simply take in the local wildlife.

You’re on the edge of The Mendips and it’s a short hike up the hill for breath taking views. A walk in one direction takes you to Cheddar and; in the other you’ll reach Priddy, well-known for its annual folk festival. If you do want to go further, One of Britain’s smallest cities, Wells, and the caves at Wookey Hole are just seven miles away. Medieval Axbridge is even closer and Glastonbury a half hour drive. To round it off, a local cider barn is within a 5 minute walk which offers live music and delicious pizzas.

We are a quiet, countryside Adults only Glamping site

(sorry, but we cannot accommodate stag /hens parties or pets )

Glorious Little Spot
What a beautiful weekend we had staying at The Paddocks. The glowy tent provided a cosy and atmospheric feel, with a bonus heater inside. Huge thanks to Miriam, Harry and Steff for providing us with everything we could have wanted- the indoor(ish!) kitchen in the barn was a nice touch for when the British weather decided not to behave. It was lovely and peaceful, with minimal noise from other guests and a lot of privacy. There is an abundance of wildlife around, for anyone interested in birdwatching we saw a number of red kites amongst other animals! Thank you again- we will definitely be back and would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet retreat away from it all ❤️

Camping with a view!
The Paddocks is a small campsite with a large field, so you have a lot of space to setup your tent, while still not disturbed by your neighbours. Don't forget to turn around, what an outstanding panoramic view right out your tent! While I was staying at The Paddocks, there was typical British weather; rain, rain, rain. But there is a nice barn equipped with chairs, a couch and kitchen. So even during the rain I could stay outside for a drink and breakfast. A tidy bathroom with hot shower is available next to the barn. Well done Miriam, thanks for having me camp on your campsite!

Fabulous stay!!
Miriam was an amazing host, she made every effort to make sure we were comortable and confident about all the facilities in her lovely camping site. Site had beautiful views, a very clean shower with hot water and two toilets as well as a little communal 'chill' area where there was a kettle, fridge and a fire with sofas which was lovely on a night where we didnt want to be out and about. Site is a decent walking distance to main town cheddar (about 30mins, flat walk) and 5-10 mins from the Cider Barn (which I would highly recommend! very sweet place with good cider and a pool table etc). Will definetley be returning if I find myself near by again!

Nearby attractions
The site is just two miles away from Cheddar with the famous Cheddar Gorge (01278 751874), caves, shops and eateries and it is a pleasant walk to get there. The site is on the edge of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a beautiful place to walk with the West Mendip Way passing site, just a few hundred yards away, and Draycott Sleights Nature Reserve nearby. From the hills above the site views are over the Somerset Levels and as far as the Welsh hills and Bristol Channel to the West, the Quantocks and Blackdown Hills to the South. The villages of Wedmore and Priddy, famous for its folk festival, are about four miles from the site and medieval Axbridge is a little further but worth a visit.
Food and drink
There are lots of farmer's outlets selling strawberries and fresh market produce, just a short walking distance away. The Strawberry Special (01934 742177) and The Cider Barn (01934 741837) are both within a mile of site and, only slightly further away (two miles from the site), is The Rodney Stoke Inn (01749 870209) with a restaurant. Cheddar has many good pubs and restaurants and further away is Wells with many pubs and restaurants to chose from too. In the nearby village of Priddy choose from the Queen Victoria (01749 676385) pub and Hunters Lodge (01749 676385), well known to cavers and walkers alike. In Wedmore, The Swan (01934 710337) is recommended.
