Simple ppp-pleasures by the riverside – Pooh Sticks, paddling and picnicking
Family-run for 21 years, The Green Caravan Park sees many families return year after year. Maybe it’s the magnetic effect of the river (particularly on the kids) that keeps ‘em coming back. The site sits in the Onny Valley, with the River East Onny running through it. Shallow enough for paddling and catching tiddlers (don’t worry if you didn’t bring a net – the shop will be happy to sell one to you), the river is also great for playing Pooh Sticks from the little bridges. And the local wildlife likes it here, too. There are 32 bird boxes along the river and 59 species of bird have been recorded by campers. Bat boxes, a wild area, recycling facilities and energy efficient lighting have also helped the site to gain a David Bellamy Gold Conservation award for good environmental practices and commitment to preserving the natural world. The site has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and your friendly hosts like to keep it a fairly rule-free zone – though there are three: keep to the five-miles-an-hour speed limit, keep your doggy friend on a lead and be sure to clear up after him, too. Well, four if you count the quiet zone from 10pm to 8am.

Nearby attractions
This is great walking country. The Offa’s Dyke National Trail runs close by, and the Onny Valley lies between the heather-clad Long Mynd and the craggy outcrops of the Stiperstones Ridge. But don’t tell the children that! Of course we are not just going for a walk up that big hill – we are hunter-gatherers foraging for wimberries.
Food and drink
If you don’t fancy the Inn on the Green (01588 650105), which is right next door to the campsite, a short, steep walk up the hill brings you to the Crown Inn in Wentnor (01588 650613), which has real ales, roasts, baguettes and a children’s menu. Bishops Castle has lots of eateries, with children welcome at the own-brew Three Tuns (01588 638797) and the (also own-brew) Six Bells (01588 630144).
