Nearly wild, back-to-nature camping on a regenerative farm in Buckinghamshire

It’s all about balance at Pitchcott Farm where a simple campsite co-exists with nature and low-intervention farming. You might hear owls or spot deer but you will barely know other campers are there. This is a dog-friendly campsite of ten pitches and a single bell tent in a 15-acre meadow with lovely countryside views. The grass can be long, the facilities are low key and who knows what wildflowers will be growing during your stay. But that’s the beauty of this place – it’s on the wild side and perfect if you’re looking for nearly wild camping in Buckinghamshire.

Midway between Aylesbury and Winslow, Pitchcott Farm occupies a pretty, peaceful spot and stretches across 150 acres. The camping field may only be a tiny proportion of this but it’s still huge for the number of tents and campervans allowed at any one time. The toilet is composting, the washing-up sink is sheltered only by a tree and the shower is tucked in a hedgerow. Using it is a unique experience that won’t be for everyone – but most who try it love it and the water under the canopy is warm. A barn where you can shelter in bad weather and a communal fire pit near the pond complete the facilities here.

The single bell tent comes with its own and has seating provided outside. Inside, it has two double mattresses, side tables and a light. And there’s another bed included too – this one is tucked away and open air for nights under the stars. If this is glamping, it’s simple, wild and relaxed, rather like the rest of this back-to-basics campsite in Buckinghamshire.

Bell tent and outdoor bed

The host is nice and friendly but the tent itself is not equipped for weather below 20 in the night. There is a gap around the perimeter of the tent which makes it very cold. The water comes in, and the cold air as well. We were staying late August and the temperature outside was around 13-12 degrees in the night, meaning inside was the same, including all the wind and water from the rain. I wish this information was provided while booking, as not everyone i can sleep in these conditions.

We had such a great time camping in our van here- lovely big field full of interesting insects and birds the kids loved looking at. The forest shower brilliant and location beautiful. Thank you.

Motorhome

Beautiful site, lovely walks direct from the farm, peaceful and very enjoyable. I went in my motorhome with my dog. Had a wonderful weekend. Communication before coming was great, open and honest and very helpful. The site is basic and wonderful. Absolutely loved the shower in the hedgerow. Will definitely come again.

Lovely views but grass too long.

We loved the space that the site offered, we felt like we had it to ourselves plus the views and local area were stunning. Unfortunately the very long grass made it unpleasant at times and it wasn’t what it looked like in the pictures. It meant the kids couldn’t run freely around the field, we had to make our own paths pushing the wheelbarrow through and pitch on unknown areas. Where a few paths had been created it was very narrow and grass was chest high in places. We’ve camped in meadow campsites before but we wouldn’t stay again if it was like that. Can’t comment too much on the hosts as we didn’t see anyone but quick replies via texts.

The field where we camped was amazing and the sunrises and sunsets were unbelievable. However the facilities are very basic with a compostable toilet and a hedge shower. These are probably an acquired taste or better experienced by those with a sense of adventure. Amazing weekend

Perfect Gateway - Camping in Nature

We loved tent camping on Tony’s land. This was our second time and will definitely be back many more times! There is plenty of room for all campers even at almost full capacity! The outside shower between the trees looking at fields is the best experience. Host directions and pre arrival messages are very helpful and really appreciated Elise checking up on us during our stay to make sure we were settled in well! Thanks and see you soon

Pitchcott Farm is set among the rolling hills of the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside. The farm is a total of 150 acres and campers have access to a 15 acre meadow with vibrant wild flowers in spring and summer. The farm prioritises the protection and expansion of biodiversity so camping pitches are limited to retain the wild nature of the site. Look out for wild deer in the meadow, and you might hear the hoot of owls at night.

Nearby attractions

Pitchcott Farm is in the Buckinghamshire countryside with some good walking nearby. There are plenty of local footpaths and bridleways including a straightforward route of about two miles which takes you to the village of Quainton where there’s a tea room, The George and Dragon, and a working windmill (open for limited hours on Sundays only). A little further in the same direction (three miles) is the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre which has model railways, exhibitions and summer steam days. The campsite is equidistant between the market town of Winslow and the county town of Aylesbury (both seven miles), where there are lots of historic buildings. For kids, the Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery (open weekends and school holiday only) at the Bucks Museum is a good visit. Whipsnade Zoo (18 miles) is also a family-friendly day out that’s not too far away and Bletchley Park (14 miles) is another big-name attraction nearby.

Food and drink

The closest pub to Pitchcott Farm is The Black Boy in the nearby village of Oving (one mile). It’s an easy walk up the lane away and serves good pub food as well as pizzas and burgers. Takeaways are possible too. For breakfast, lunch or coffee and cake, head a bit further in the other direction to Quainton and The George and Dragon Coffee Shop and Tea Room. There’s also The Betsey Wynne in the village of Swanbourne (six miles away) which offers a mostly Mediterranean menu in a modern country pub setting. The town of Winslow (seven miles) is a good place to head to if you want to stock up on supplies to cook for yourselves. There’s a good deli and a butchers among the other high street shops and eateries there.
