A campfire-friendly country campsite on a farm in walking distance of seaside Southwold

Stay at this campsite and you’ll experience much of what makes Suffolk special: countryside, coast, lots of great food, a little quirkiness, and plenty of Adnams ales. That last one is optional but you won’t avoid the others. Pigs in Blankets is a campsite in the rural surrounds of a working livestock farm on the edge of the seaside town of Southwold. Farm fresh barbecue fodder is available on site, just-caught fish and seafood can be found in the harbour and that quirkiness? Well, apart from in the name of the campsite, you’ll find that down on Southwold Pier which, by the way, is a short walk away.

The set up here is on the simple side but not completely back-to-basics. In fact, the cleanliness and general loveliness of the facilities are oft commented on. You have flushing loos, hot water showers, and a communal campers’ area in a converted Dutch barn. There’s also a chilled vending machine full of fresh farm produce, picnic tables for if the weather’s a bit iffy and table tennis too. Most of your time, however, will be out in the field. It’s a six-acre meadow that’s kept deliberately car-free so kids can run about without worry. You pitch where you please and enjoy the views across fields towards, but not quite, to the sea.

That pleasure (a sea view) is not too far away though. There’s a handy footpath from the campsite across the farm towards Southwold and you won’t get far along the way before you spy the sea. In fact, it’s only 15 minutes until you hit the shore. Take a stroll along the pier, wander into town, sunbathe on the beach or take a tour of Adnams Brewery. With plenty of eateries, shops, and low key things to do, it’s a charming little seaside town that’s perfect for a week or a weekend away. And Pigs in Blankets is the closest tent-focused site to town. It’s the only one with a car-free approach to camping and a traffic-free route straight to the pier. It’s also campfire and dog friendly. If that sounds like your kind of campsite, we think you’ll love it here.

The piglet
The three of us girls stayed in the glamping pods for two nights, and they were perfect—warm, cozy, with a great shower, nice amenities, and convenient plug sockets, along with tea and coffee. The space felt comfortable and not cramped at all. The pods are ideally situated, about a 12-15 minute walk from Southwold, making for a lovely stroll through beautiful surroundings. Everyone at the farm was incredibly welcoming, and the staff went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect. We can't recommend this campsite highly enough!

Grass Tent Pitch
A lovely, spacious tent pitch with views of the surrounding fields. The location is so convenient for walking into southwold , only 15 minute walk to the pier. Such a good option to have use of a bar on site from 2-10pm. Only negative would be to have a slightly cleaner shower and toilet area with spare toilet rolls to hand. Would love to come back in the future as it’s a fairly quiet site in a great location!

Here at Pigs in Blankets we offer a stunning selection of camping pitches, scattered across our secluded 6 acre meadow that lies within the grounds of our working livestock farm. Re-connect with the wilderness and camp with an unspoilt view of our farm animals, wildfowl marshland and the breathtaking Suffolk coastline. All while having the luxury of staying within a stone's throw of the bustling seaside town of Southwold. Renowned for its plentiful pubs, designer high street and sandy beaches. The recently refurbished 'straw shed' is at the heart of the campsite. A dutch barn that used to service the farm has been tastefully brought back to life, offering all amenities, a game's room, wash up area, washing machines and tumble dryers. High welfare produce from the farm is available to campers through a self service farm pantry vending machine
Nearby attractions

Pigs in Blankets campsite is about a mile from Southwold and there’s a great walking or cycling route via a mixture of private and public footpaths straight from the campsite. If you don’t want to bring your own bike, you can hire them from Southwold Cycle Hire who will deliver them to site. Down at Southwold, there’s a sandy beach backed by beach huts and a lovely pier with quirky amusements at The Under The Pier Show as well as shops and ice cream kiosks. The town has lots of eateries and independent shops, a boating lake and adventure golf. It’s also home to Adnams Brewery where you can enjoy a tour and tasting – and if you’re more into gin than beer, no problem you can set off on the distillery tour instead. You can go crabbing from the harbour wall or hop aboard the foot ferry (a 12-person capacity rowing boat – not a ship) to cross the River Blyth to the idyllic neighbouring village of Walberswick.

Food and drink

Local produce for your barbecue at Pigs in Blankets comes straight from the farm via a vending machine in The Straw Shed. Bacon, sausages, eggs and milk from a local dairy…. Other than that head into Southwold where your every need is catered for whether you want to eat out or pick up supplies for more campsite cooking. Don’t miss the fish and chips from The Little Fish & Chip Shop in town – or head to the harbour for a different take on fish and chips from Sole Bay Fish Co where fish platters and lobster are on the menu too in rustic and atmospheric little restaurant. Sole Bay Fish Co also offers takeaways and has a fishmonger’s counter too. The Crown is a good option on the High Street for a drink or a meal and your hosts recommend picking up a Portuguese custard tart from the Two Magpies Bakery. In Walberswick, Jess and Matt recommend The Bell Inn.
