Simple camping surrounded by all the delicious Oxfordshire and Cotswolds village food offerings

Under new ownership since the summer of 2019, Cotswold Camping, haf an hour from Oxford, has long been a stalwart of the quieter camping scene in the north of the Cotswolds. Thankfully, Keith and Nicole Dighton have picked up where the previous owners left off, not only maintaining a well organised, extremely relaxed experience for everyone who stays but also making extra additions, including new glamping pods, a cute toy shed for youngsters and two seperate meadows for groups, with their own kitchen and toilet facilities.

The campsite is on the edge of the beautiful market town of Charlbury, with stunning views across the Evenlode Valley. It offers a spacious main camping field flanked by pine trees, with walks across open countryside accessible through a gate at the back. Caravans aren’t banned, but there’s more grass than hardstandings and the scale of this site appeals far more to dedicated tenters. It’s a perfect place to kick back, fill your lungs with fresh air, read the paper, and listen to the surrounding cows, sheep, and chickens. Oh, and waking up to the soft cooing sounds of resident wood pigeons is priceless.

As well as being a great springboard for visiting the surrounding Oxfordshire and Cotswolds villages, with their honey-coloured stone buildings, Cotswolds Camping is surrounded by yumminess of the food variety. Wander into Charlbury for its many pubs, or head to the little village of Chadlington for a community-managed shop at its best, complemented by a coffee shop that sprawls out on to the pavement a few doors down. You’re not in the middle of nowhere here, but it feels like it.

Hipcamp Update, December 2020: Due to issues regarding Covid and an unexpected increase in demand, the new owners of Cotswolds Camping endured a difficult first season and standards temporarily slipped below those expected during peak months. Hipcamp has been working with the campsite to ensure standards are returned to usual and we visited Cotswolds Camping in September 2020. As a result, Cotswolds Camping has now been re-approved for continued inclusion in the Hipcamp collection and we are happy to once again recommend Cotswolds Camping to Cool Campers. Your ongoing feedback is appreciated.

The campsite offers a peaceful and well-organized environment, perfect for families and solo campers alike. With friendly hosts and clean facilities, it seems to be a welcoming spot for everyone, although some guests noted occasional issues with amenities like toilet paper and overflowing bins. The small cafe and play area for kids add to the site's charm, making it a convenient and enjoyable place to stay. Visitors also appreciate the site's location, with its proximity to local villages and scenic trails, though a few have remarked on noise levels during busy periods.

Lovely place and good layout. However, toilet facilities were a let down. The toilet roll holders were inefficient and couldn't get any out on multiple occasions. Even by morning this had not been fixed and was the same in many of the toilets. The lights for the bathroom went out when I was having a shower which was also very uncomfortable. I understand about energy saving but the design needs to be better.

A brilliant night away
We loved our stay in the gypsy wagon. It was quaint and cosy, the campsite itself was so friendly and well maintained and the live music in the evening was a brilliant touch. We will be back!!
