A secluded off-grid woodland cabin in North Cornwall

This cabin in a Cornish woodland offers an experience that is both back to basics and back to nature. It’s tucked in a 15-acre woodland and completely off grid and, in case you’re in any doubt, we mean that both literally and metaphorically. There’s no electricity and no running water but helpful host Derek makes sure it’s as comfortable as can be – in a rustic way that feels right for the woods. The cabin is christened Owl’s ‘Oot and the location is Raven Hill Farm. Take a seat outside this hideaway and it won’t take you long to see why.

This mostly wooded site has three acres of fields and a stream so it’s no wonder that owls and ravens like it here alongside the deer, foxes, and badgers. The woods have an almost magical appeal that could keep you right here for your stay, but it’s more than likely that you’ll want to see more of the south west while you’re here. Raven Hill Farm is situated near North Cornwall’s border with Devon and just over a 15-minute drive from the coast. Widemouth Bay and Bude are perhaps the closest spots but Crackington Haven and Boscastle are nearby too. Inland, Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and the Tamar Valley are all about half an hour away.

However you spend your days, the woods offer a welcome return. You leave your car a three-minute walk from the cabin and as you make your way there, modernity slips away. There’s an outdoor kitchen for cooking, a compost toilet, and basic camp shower a few steps away. Once the sun sets, you’ll need torches and lanterns to light your way and you’ll have to light a fire to keep warm outside. There's a gas stove provided indoors. It’s a simple space with ply-wood walls but the bed is made and camping kit is included. It has everything you need to be comfortable but not enough to distract you from what’s outside: wildlife and the wonder of the wood.

Welcome to Owl's 'Oot our quirky woodland cabin. The unique delight of this off-grid treasure is it's tucked away within 15 acres of wild woodland for you to explore. Off-grid and off the beaten track with a myriad of paths to meander and stream side walk. You'll be sharing the wood with Roe Deer, Fox and an occasional Badger. Alongside the Barn Owl, Tawny Owl, Raven and Buzzard there's much more wildlife to discover. If peace and solitude is your calling then come and find a treasure. Really comfy double bed, outdoor covered kitchen with gas hob and fresh water supplied. Private use camping shower and toilet. It's a short 3 minute walk to the location from your vehicle yet you'll feel miles away from everything (we supply a trolley if needed).

Owls 'Oot Woodland Cabin
Fantastic cabin in peaceful woods!
We had the most wonderful time at Owl's Oot cabin! Serene, well kitted out, and just what we needed to unwind & connect. A really great find! Derek was a fantastic host - communication was swift, and any requests we had were no bother at all. We'll be back, for sure...

Owls Oot Woodland Cabin is tucked away in secluded, nature filled woodland wonderland. The farm property is in North Cornwall, 15 minutes from the rugged coast with good beaches nearby, yet easy access from the A30. The land consists of 3 acres of grass field, occasionally used as a retreat event centre and 15 acres of secluded woodland and stream where you'll chance upon resident Fox, Roe Deer and so much wildlife to spot. There is a small log burner to keep you cosy on those autumn evenings and the cabin is super insulated to keep you nice and snug. The double bed has a lovely comfy mattress so you wake up refreshed and you'll be surprised when you remember you're in the middle of these abundant woods. The two-seater sofa converts to a single bed to give further options. The unique outdoor covered kitchen has a two ring burner, sink, water supply, cool storage, and fully kitted out with all crockery and pans. Preparing your meals will give you that off-grid camping feel whilst you can then eat in or out in the picnic area. The solar panel gives full lighting and a usb charger for your phone, though, trust me, you'll want to put your phone away for most of the time and just sink into what nature is offering you. .

The closest beach is sandy Widemouth Bay, 10 miles from the farm, and good for swimming and surfing. Bude is a few miles north with traditional seaside resort fun at the back of its sandy beach. At low tide there’s sand and rockpools at Crackington Haven (12 miles from site) and the fishing village of Boscastle is 16 miles away.

Food and drink

This is rural Cornwall so there’s not much that’s too nearby but you can stock up on basics at Whitstone Stores just under four miles from site or head to Chelsfield Farm Shop just under two miles from the site. There’s also a pub and restaurant at the same site (also a holiday park) called The Stumble Inn. Alternatively, The Eastcott Arms, four miles from site, is a traditional pub with a friendly landlord which serves drinks only. For more options of places to eat out, head to Launceston (seven miles).
