Less than a mile away from Hadrian’s Wall

The 82 miles of Emperor Hadrian’s monumental, Pict-proof stone wall is Northumberland’s most famous landmark. Though its military barracks are in ruins, the historical structures remain impressively atmospheric. It’s easy to imagine how the soldiers must have felt, keeping watch at the very outpost of the civilised world. By day scanning a horizon of rolling hummocks and wind blown heathland, by night using the light of the moon in a sky that, to this day, remains one of the darkest spots in Europe. The wall is now a World Heritage Site, but you can still camp just a mile or so from one of the most complete and dramatic sections at Hadrian’s Wall Campsite.

The site is terraced on four levels, each commanding amazing views over open country side and to the wall itself. In the summer months, an extra ‘wild camping’ field is opened up, with oodles of space for large families and campfires by arrangement. Weary backpackers can also rejoice: there’s a strip dedicated entirely to your aching bones – no need to book, just stagger up on the day – with a handy cook house to help speed the post-walk meal along. The campsite is well located for rambles along Hadrian’s Wall Path, an 84-mile National Trail shadowing the line of the wall. Your hosts will even arrange transport to or from your start/finish points, leaving you free to enjoy your linear walk and the wall.

Great stay in the bell tent
Lovely clean campsite, something for everyone from tent pitches to shepherds huts. We did glamping in the bell tent and found it very comfortable with one adult and two children staying. 3 power points were very useful and even had radiators to keep us warm at night. We hired the kitchen stuff which had everything we needed. Amazing setting with lots of walks on the door step, we did a nice walk to Sycamore Gap. Haltwhistke is a 5 minute drive with plenty of shops, supermarkets, restaurants and takeaways, me used the outdoor pool and the gym at the leisure centre. Would definitely be back and would recommend to anyone x

Perfect location and beautiful site
The bell tent was absolutely amazing for a few nights with the cosy wood burning stove in the cold nights, and the mobile kitchen made all the difference. The site is beautiful and the facilities are really well maintained. Finally it's in a great location with only 15 minute walk to the wall and easy walking distance to two great pubs, particularly the Twice Brewed Inn which brews its own beers and is really worth a visit.

Our campsite is situated in the glorious Northumberland landscape. The campsite is a small, compact and peaceful site with pitches on different levels. The bell tents and the shepherd hut are part of the main campsite but share the space with only a small number of others so even when busy it doesn't feel that way. You will be entertained by the birds including swallows, starlings and robins that like to visit the tent. We have a small duck pond with our special crested ducks. Hadrian's wall is less than a mile away and you can easily get to the famous Sycamore Gap from the site and we are ideally situated for the museums and Roman forts.
Nearby attractions

The Housesteads Roman Fort and Museum (01434 344363) is just down the road and The Vindolanda & Roman Army Museum (01434 344277) allows you to experience the world famous Vindolanda Writing Tablets, live archaeology in summertime and a collection of Roman finds from local sites. They are always digging and finding new treasures. North of the campsite is dominated by the Kielder Forest National Park, a huge expanse ideal for walking and cycling, centred around Kielder Water, a vast man-made lake and one of Britain’s largest nature resorts. Things to do include fishing, boating and an array of water sports.

Food and drink
There is a small cafe and shop offering home cooking and groceries including breakfasts. Pizza can be delivered to your pitch, evening meals can be arranged and even a pack lunch can be organised if your out for a walk! Haltwhistle is also a short distance away and has plenty of excellent shops, cafes and take aways. The stone-built Milecastle Inn (01434 321372), a mile to the west, has everything an age-old country pub could want including wooden beams covered in nick-nacks, an open fire and a resident ghost. It also has the benefit of ‘wall’ views from the beer garden.
