Luxury Lotus Belle tent glamping with sweeping views, within walking distance of Bamburgh town and castle (and beach)

Adults-only glamping awaits in Northumberland, only a mile from the historic village of Bamburgh and its vast sandy beach, and with the Holy Island of Lindisfarne a drive away. This glampsite’s spacious Lotus Belle tents are luxuriously furnished with all that’s necessary for a relaxing stay – including a comfy double bed, a stove for those chilly evenings, and a firepit – and they’re set in an open field with unobstructed views towards the Cheviot Hills. When it's clear, the sunsets are to die for.

It’s all about the location here; Bamburgh Under Canvas is in a prime position for exploring what Northumberland has to offer. Based in the peaceful hamlet of Glororum, it’s only a 20-minute walk into Bamburgh, where you can visit its historic castle with spectacular views of the North Sea. Alnwick Castle – a filming location for Harry Potter and Downtown Abbey – is nearby, too, and there are plenty of popular beaches lining the Northumberland Coast.

The site is a real romantic couples' getaway, with no children allowed – though feel free to bring your four-legged friend, as up to two dogs are more than welcome for a small additional charge. There are only five tents, meaning lots of peace and quiet, and the Lotus Belles have some considerable advantages over a traditional bell tent, most notably the additional headroom that lets you move around without crouching.

Even though there are only a handful of tents, there are still two well-maintained shared bathrooms with hot water and clean toilets. Both are in quirkily refurbished horse boxes, befitting the luxury-meets-boho aesthetic of the site. Bath towels are provided, naturally, along with eco-friendly toiletries. The luxuries are such that you don't really notice the place is entirely off-grid. Save for when night falls and Northumberland's famously dark and starry skies are in full show. It means it's well worth packing a torch (though USB battery packs for phone-charging and lanterns are provided). It also means, for stargazing, there's no finer place to be.

Lovely two nights in a yurt. Just 30mins walk from Bamburgh. Lovely and toasty with a log burner and nice touches with the horsebox shower rooms and outdoor kitchen

The yurt was absolutely great and everything in it, you have thought of everything, nice little touches. We were disappointed that on our last day there was no hot water in toilets or kitchen to wash up. A little bit sceptical about leaving the site to go site seeing when there was nobody around so we took all valuables with us. Unfortunately the weather was not too kind to us but would definitely recommend. The £10 you charge for a bag of logs was a bit steep, fortunately we didn't need to buy any as it was not pleasant sitting out. Would certainly revisit hopefully when it's warm sunny weather but that can't be guaranteed 🌞

Nearby attractions

Bamburgh is a 20-minute walk away, a town awarded the best seaside town in the UK by Which? magazine. An idyllic place to explore, Bamburgh is overlooked by its castle, positioned within nine acres of land that lead onto the sprawling and dog-friendly Bamburgh beach. From here you'll be treated to views of Holy Island. It's a 20-minute drive to the causeway leading to the island, which is only accessible by low tide making it one of the more unique places to visit in the UK. Here you can visit the dramatic ruins of the Lindisfarne Priory, the dreamy Lindisfarne Castle perched atop a spiralling hill, or taste the locally brewed Lindisfarne Mead in its local village shop.

Food and drink

The Potted Lobster is just over a mile away in Bamburgh, providing a dining experience that sits between relaxed and elegant – much like Bamburgh Under Canvas itself! Serving a robust menu of locally-sourced seafood, the lobster comes highly recommended – served in one of three ways – though there are also gluten-free and dairy-free options. The Victoria Hotel is another popular Bamburgh bar and restaurant; expect to pay for quality, with food served from breakfast through to dinner and outdoor seating available. Here there's a mix of pub classics and more unique options, ranging from fish and chips through to Salmon tikka vegetable kebabs. For food to bring back to your firepit, pop into the local Bamburgh butcher R Carter and Son, who boast a top reputation locally for their high-quality produce, along with meals directly from their kitchen including homemade souls, chicken casseroles, and even curries such as rogan josh and korma.
