Life on Britain’s canals and sleepy inland waterways tends to chug along at a maximum of four miles an hour. There’s little more relaxing than a holiday on these waters — but we can think of one: a holiday by them. A holiday where entertainment comes in the form of passing canal boats and the occasional heron or kingfisher flying by. One where you can refill your glass with chilled Champagne without leaving the waters’ edge or sink into a hot tub and still enjoy the view. That’s what’s on offer at Heygates Lodging. Here, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, two pleasingly curvy log cabins offer self-catering stays with thoughtful touches including outdoor fridges for cooling that fizz and a plentiful log supply for your fire pit.

The location is the tiny hamlet of Elkington in Northamptonshire and those cabins are Fox and Pheasant Lodge, each styled with touches which reference the country creature they’re named for. Fox is tucked on the edge of a little, well-maintained woodland, Pheasant occupies a more open spot. Both sit in a canalside paddock that’s gently maturing into a wild and grassy meadow. These are self-contained and well-kitted out cabins; each with its own bathroom, running water, electricity and a kitchenette with a made-up king-sized bed and a sofa too.

This is comfortable, nicely styled glamping that’s got a grown-up feel about it thanks to the calm atmosphere, neat planting and availability of carefully-selected wines. These come (if you want them) via your hosts Graham and Allison, who’ve created this bijou site in a paddock, which neighbours the garden of their home. They’ll meet you on arrival, settle you in and are happy to provide local goodies as well as good quality wines and tips on everything from firelighting to places to visit.

In truth, the site is not near anywhere in particular and that’s part of the beauty of the place. There’s no shop or pub in the village and you can join the canalside tow path to walk for miles in either direction without getting anywhere specific. But there’s an A-road handily close which means you can whizz you to where you want to go quickly and there are pubs, nature reserves, gardens and stately homes not far from here. By road you can reach Market Harborough in 20 minutes and get here and away as easily as days by the canal slip by.

Fox Lodge
Outstanding experience.
We had the most wonderful time at fox Lodge, the place felt like a little home from home, fairly well isolated and situated far enough from the other cabin to feel like it was just us there...it was exactly the kind of privacy we were looking for. Graham and Allison were extremely attentive hosts, there at the drop of a hat if needed and offered to pick us up anything we had forgotten whilst also being very respectful of our privacy, they made us feel very welcome. I would recommend the breakfast package to anyone! We managed to get 2 days breakfasts out of it with eggs still left over. Our dogs had the best time and enjoyed playing in the garden area all day long and we also went for a few walks down the canal which were lovely. The hot tub was phenomenal with a full explanation of how to use by Graham on arrival. We will most definitely be visiting again, couldn't be happier with our experience. Thanks again Graham and Allison I'm sure we will see you again soon!

Beautiful spot on a sleepy canal in the British countryside. A perfect weekend break with the best hospitality from Graham that we’ve experienced over the years. We’ll be back.

What a wonderful few days away! Graham and Allison were very welcoming and showed us around the pod on arrival. They checked in on us and made sure everything was okay during our stay, as well as beautiful views all around the pod. We will definitely return in the future.

A place to unwind in the heart of the countryside. Canalside walks are on your doorstep and nature is never far away - birds of prey such as red kites and buzzards are plentiful, and you may be lucky enough to see otters in the canal. There's a variety of pubs and restaurants within a short drive, and the market towns of Rugby and Market Harborough area about 20 minutes away. Unwind in the hot tub, enjoy local beers and ciders or pick from our expertly curated wine list. Our Lodges have their own fire pits and BBQs, and all fuel is provided. Each lodge has its own hammock, and a designated private fishing peg at a turning point in the canal, meaning that you'll be largely undisturbed by passing boats.
Nearby attractions

The site is very rural, and offers a number of walking and cycling routes and there's plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities too — otters have been sighted in the canal and various birds of prey are a common sight. You may also hear owls and foxes hunting at night. Local points of interest include Naseby Battlefield (six miles away), and reservoirs/nature reserves at Hollowell (eight miles away) or Pitsford (13 miles). Northamptonshire has an abundance of stately homes with Coton Manor Gardens (01604 740 219) and Althorp House (01604 770107) both within 15 miles of site. There are several golf courses in the vicinity, and we are situated midway between Northampton and Leicester (about 20 miles from each), which offer rugby, football and cricket viewing options at various times of the year. The market towns of Rugby and Market Harborough are about 20 minutes' drive away.

Food and drink

The nearest coffee shop is Squisto (07544 428165), an Italian deli in Yelvertoft (three miles away).  Local pubs include The Wharf at Welford (01858 575075) four miles from site, and The Red Lion (01604 740238) in Thornby. Ask your hosts for more tips on places to eat out.
