Glamping in natural surroundings near Dartmoor

Choose between a shepherd’s hut overlooking a pond and one of two modern domes in a meadow. Those are the glamping options on offer at Nettle and Dock, a rather lovely site in the Devonshire countryside. Each is self contained, well designed, and stylish and located just a few miles from Dartmoor. But there are some big differences too. The shepherd’s hut, for example, is the glampiest of the three, with a solid roof, an electricity supply, a log burner and, even, an outdoor bath. Meanwhile, over in the hay meadow, the domes are closer to camping. Pitched in a field with huge windows to the stars they are further immersed in the outdoors and have access to a woodland hot tub. As tough decisions go, it’s rather a nice one to contemplate.

All three are set up for couples but one of the domes, Fern, can accommodate up to two children too – and both of the domes are dog friendly. These modern, lozenge-shaped tents are light, airy and large enough for an en-suite shower room, living space and separate bedroom. The shepherd’s hut has a more traditional feel and is cosier into the bargain. As you might expect, it is a single living space. It has a kitchenette, an ingenious bed that tucks away and an en-suite shower room too. Outside there’s a camp kitchen and a fire-warmed bath tub too, all looking over a pond.

There are little pathways around the site’s woodland, fields and ponds where you might spot grazing deer. But one of the real pleasures of this place is that it’s just a few miles from Dartmoor National Park where wilder space for walking is not in short supply. Head to Fingle Bridge to explore a wooded riverside gorge or to Belstone to walk on the open moor. Nettle and Dock is just a 10-minute drive from the A30 and, as such, it’s well positioned if you’re touring the west and want a few days in the national park – but it’s also good for adventures further afield. Its position in mid-Devon means both the north and south coasts are within reach – as well as everything in between.

Fern
Fantastic stay
One of our best experiences of camping/glamping. The site is very beautiful and peaceful, the tent is comfortable and gives plenty of light and space - and there is a nordic hot tub down the meadow ! The hosts give you tips for great walks in the area and good food in local pubs. Wonderful days for our family.

Glamping domes
Wonderful first glamping experience
Absolutely loved our stay in the Dandeilion glamping dome! It was cosy and inviting with the essentials you'd need to be comfortable! We loved the welcome book and all the great recommendations too. For me the best part was being able to open the dome, sit on the deck and enjoy seeing our dog run around the field having the time of his life. I would definitely recommend the domes to friends and family. If we were coming back at this time of year though I'd pack my wellies as the field was quite damp walking to and from the car in the mornings and evenings. However, that's just us needing to be more prepared!

Nestled on our beautiful farm in the rolling hills of Devon, our spacious Glamping dome tents offer you an escape from it all. Experience an off-grid eco stay, come and enjoy the great outdoors, camping with luxury’s, low-level lights, running water, gas hob, a full bathroom inside the tent with hot shower and flushing toilets. We have two tents in a 7 acre meadow, so they can be perfect for couples wishing to holiday together. They are also really secluded on there own.
Nearby attractions

There’s a lovely woodland walk on the farm and, if you’re competent with an OS Map, further walks in the surrounding countryside but for more dramatic scenery head into Dartmoor National Park itself. The park’s northern boundary is six miles away and Fingle Bridge is a great place to start a riverside walk into a wooded gorge and the Castle Drogo Estate, which is a good place for a visit in its own right. To walk across the classic heathland scenery of Dartmoor, perhaps head for Belstone, 12 miles from site, and for wild swimming there are plenty of places to take a dip (including near Fingle Bridge). Gardeners might like to visit RHS Rosemoor which is a 35-minute drive from site and if you can’t fathom going to Devon without paying a visit to the beach, that’s possible too. The south coast at Dawlish and Exmouth is closest (about 50 minutes) while the north coast’s Bude is not much further, about an hour’s drive.

Food and drink

Tea and coffee are provided as part of a welcome pack and there’s fresh milk available in the communal barn. For more than that, there’s a Co-op in Bow (three miles) and plenty of shops where you can buy local produce in the Dartmoor town of Chagford (10 miles). As you might expect in such a rural location, there’s no place to eat out within easy walking distance but there are two recommended ones both about five miles away. Try the changing modern menus and own-brewed ales at The Duck at Yeoford or the good-value pub grub at traditional Devon pub The New Inn at Coleford which also has a garden overlooking a stream. Even closer to site is the Tom Cobley Tavern (three miles) which also serves traditional home-cooked pub fare. For craft ales head for the Taw Valley Brewery Taproom (five miles) on a Saturday afternoon or if wine is more to your taste, there are three vineyards within 30 miles: Alder, Swanaford and Pebblebed.
