Mangerton Lake backs on to a footpath that leads into the Dorset countryside. The Monarch’s Way, long-distance footpath, passes close by too and the coast offers the South West Coast Path for walks by the sea. The closest place to join it – or to reach the beach – is West Bay (three miles), a mile or so beyond the market town of Bridport. The whole area is part of the UNESCO world Heritage-listed Jurassic Coast but, perhaps, the best place to go for fossil hunting is Charmouth or Lyme Regis. Scour the beach or join one of the guided fossil hunts on offer from Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre or the Lyme Regis Museum where you can also see some local finds. Lyme Regis, with its cobbled streets and The Cobb harbour arm, is a particularly picturesque place to visit. In the other direction along the coast, Abbotsbury (11 miles) is famous for its 600-year-old colony of mute swans, established by Benadictine monks. There’s a sub-tropical gardens nearby too. Closer to site, the Furleigh Wine Estate offers a grown-up day out with tours on the vineyard and tastings of the sparkling wine that’s produced there.
