Secluded bell tent glamping in Kent's North Downs for a romantic couples' getaway

Its name says it all — Eggarton Escapes is a retreat for rest and relaxation, with this deeply private setup providing a bolthole for those looking to get away from it all. A campsite limited to just two bell tents in Kent’s picturesque North Downs, on the grounds of the gorgeous Eggarton Manor, this is a simple but well-equipped setup exclusively for couples (and a dog, for a small extra charge). There’s no need for elbow-rubbing with other campers here; hosts Lissa and Stuart understand that visitors want to get away from it all when they visit Eggarton, and that means not being stuck in an overcrowded site replete with noisy neighbours and crying children. If you come here, you’re serious about your stress-free break, and your hosts want to accommodate your need for a countryside getaway.

Eggarton has everything you need for a much-needed escape right on-site. The bell tents are comfortably furnished, the bathroom is indoors, and purchasable breakfast and barbecue boxes provide you with enough food for the duration of a weekend stay. This includes a selection of local jams and seasonal fruit for the morning, complete with traditional brekkie foods such as bacon, sausage, and eggs, while in the evening you can expect either rib-eye or sirloin steaks, potatoes and corn on the cob, and marshmallows for roasting on the provided fire pit. Tucked away within the 12 acres of land owned by its hosts, you will also have access to their swimming pool, situated in the three acres that make up their own garden.

If you wish to venture out, the infamous cathedral city of Canterbury is but a short drive away, a place of historical significance with all the modern bars, pubs, and restaurants required by the modern explorer, while Godmersham Park Heritage Centre is a stone’s throw away from the site, letting visitors explore the grounds of the Austen family’s home. Of course, with Eggarton being a destination so focused on R & R, guests will be given everything they need to not feel compelled to venture too far from their bell tent. Just try not to get too comfortable here, or you might never want to leave.

Each tent is uniquely set up, fully finished, with linen, towels and basic utensils provided. This tent has electricity, use of a shower room with hot running water and WC, fridge, kettle, nespresso machine, crockery,  fully furnished, linen, towels  fire pit, outside chairs, complimentary logs ans bag of charcoal, camping WC near tent, water butt with water near to tent. Use of swimming pool, by agreement with owner.

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by our host and we knew that we had picked the perfect place, the attention to detail and the location was perfect. The tent was clean , cosy and everything was comfortable , The Heated Swimming pool was also well maintained and spotlessly clean. We will definitely be returning soon

Beautiful location and comfy tent
Absolutely beautiful spot. The tent is in a lovely meadow with great views. Really comfy bed and great to have had the fridge for wine and the firepit to sit and enjoy it by. So many good things to mention! Lissa was a fantastic host, really thought of little touches to make our stay enjoyable, like deckchairs so you can take advantage of the sun throughout the day. It was absolutely gorgeous, thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you

Nearby attractions
Godmersham Park Heritage Centre (01227 732272) is a 20-minute walk from the site, a Grade I listed house most notable for being the home of Jane Austen’s family. While the house isn’t accessible to the public, guests can wander its beautiful grounds, including the titular park, and journey through its network of footpaths. This includes the popular Pilgrims’ Way, called as such due to being the route apparently taken by the pilgrims from Winchester to Canterbury.

Lying on the Pilgrims Way is the historic medieval village of Wye, a 10-minute drive away from the site and voted one of the best places to live in the country back in 2013. Here you’ll find a pocket of retailers, along with a selection of medieval houses along Bridge Street, and walks along the North Downs. Take a trip and admire the views from the Devil’s Kneading Trough, with the Wye National Nature Reserve slightly further out by car, providing a circular trail along with various footpaths from which to spot its abundance of wildlife.

A 25-minute drive away and you’ll reach Canterbury. While Eggarton is intended to provide an escape from the hustle and bustle, the world-famous city requires a visit from anyone looking to venture out a little, with the Canterbury Cathedral (01227 762862) being one of the most famous religious structures in the whole of the UK, while visitors can also enjoy the idyllic Westgate Parks and for riverside walks and picnics in the sun.

Food and drink
The Kings Head (01233 812418) in Wye is under a 10-minute drive from the site, with this coolly designed restaurant and hotel providing pub classics cooked to perfection. The pizzas are a sight to behold here. The White Horse Inn (01227 730355) is also reachable in under a 10-minute drive, a 15th-century coaching inn that was name-dropped in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, serving local ales and belly-warming pub scran. While strolling through Canterbury, locals would strongly recommend Mr. Falafel, a food trailer serving exactly what it says on the tin in the most mouth-watering of fashions. Speaking of mouth-watering, Notorious BRG (01227 787318), also in Canterbury and a 20-minute drive from the site, aims to provide you with a burger you won’t forget.
