1 glamping pitch
Duncan and Alexis live here with their young family and we want to continue to improve the biodiversity of the farm alongside building a sustainable farm business incorporating luxury rural accommodation and grass-fed beef and lamb.
We are lucky enough to have a wide variety of wildlife on our farm including tawny and barn owls, deer, buzzards, pheasants, swallows, bullfinches, fieldfares and numerous bats, butterflies and beetles! Take a look at our Wildlife page.
We follow a grass-fed, low input, regenerative agriculture philosophy. This means that (apart from our bulls, rams and boars which have to be bought in to prevent in-breeding) all of our animals are born on the farm. They stay with their mothers’ as long as possible growing well on their mothers’ milk and our beautiful grass. Apart from our pigs, all of our animals are only fed grass from the farm or hay (from our species rich hay meadows) in winter. We believe this is more sustainable, gives us a minimal carbon footprint and provides our animals with the best possible lives. Our shepherd’s huts have constant hot water, proper showers and flushing loos. The kitchen area has an electric fridge and hob. There is a wood burning stove and a very comfortable double bed – with those outstanding views over Exmoor and the Brendon hills.
We aim to be as environmentally friendly as possible so use Ecover cleaning products, you will notice the toiletries are all in refill pots to reduce single use plastic, Alexis’ line dries all of the towels to reduce tumble drier usage, we recycle as much as we can. We also firmly believe in buying locally and buying British. Our bedding is all British, the shepherds huts themselves came from Wiveliscombe and all of the wood burner wood is either from our farm or comes from local, sustainable woodlands.
Our luxury rural accommodation is in its infancy so we have lots of plans including a holiday cottage and hot tub and solar panels (with battery banks) to reduce our fossil fuel electricity consumption so watch this space! In the meantime, our electricity all comes from renewable sources through our energy provider.
We provide all bedding, towels, tea towels, Bayliss and Harding toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and hand soap), ecover washing up liquid, Miles tea and coffee (from Porlock). We have a good 4G signal on the farm so you can stay connected if you need to. Higher Roddon Farm is a family run business, we’re very approachable and want to make sure you have a happy holiday here. We’ll leave you in peace during your stay unless you need us, but we’re always around if you need to ask us anything.
