Quiet farm glamping in Herefordshire's cider country

Homestead Glamping, situated in the hamlet of Norton Wood in rural Herefordshire, a half-hour drive from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, boasts a setting so serene that even the butterflies are falling over themselves to get here. The meadow opposite the site is a true wildflower spectacle, owned by a local nature trust and used to collect wild seed mixes to send around the country. Natural pollination, however, means the Newhouse meadow is a riot of lush grasses too and the perfect setting to get back-to-nature.

With the peaceful setting put first, there’s really very little to the place. The meadow, just off of quirky named ‘Pig Street’. The farm is all about space and simple pleasures. Spotting red admirals and purple emperors, exploring the surrounding hills or setting out on a walk from the farm to return to nights beneath the clear, unpolluted skies.

There are several footpaths running from the site, which is located along the Black and White Property Trail, a local walking route that takes in a series of picturesque villages known for their black-and-white half-timbered style and buildings dating back to medieval times. There are plenty of good pub stops along the way, with the route running through a rich landscape of orchards and hopyards that supply the local eateries. The cathedral city of Hereford is a half-hour drive and has endless foodie options and there are plenty of good boltholes in Kington and Hay-on-Wye too. At the latter you can hire canoes for river adventures or pick them up by the old toll bridge across the Wye in Whitney.

Bluebell
Homestead Glamping provided such a tranquil and peaceful staycation. Nick and Heather were great hosts and had thought of everything you could possibly need for your stay. The location of the site was beautiful, inside a small meadow with only three tents providing a real feel of privacy. The bell tents were spacious and comfortable and extremely cosy with the added benefit of the log burner. Having your own cooking, toilet and shower facilities was a real bonus too. Sitting outside the tent on a summer evening with the fire pit going whilst sampling the local ciders was the perfect way to end the day! I would highly recommend staying here so much so that I extended my stay for a couple of extra nights. Thank you Nick and Heather

Rosiebell
We really enjoyed our stay at Homestead Glamping and Camping. Nick and Heather were the most attentive hosts and gave us a warm welcome on our arrival. The site is beautiful - three glamping tents (we stayed in Rosiebell) with their own private compost toilet, shower and kitchen, and the lovely long grass meadow provided a lot of privacy perfect for a couple's getaway. The kitchen was great too and had everything (and more) that was needed; all presented with really nice attention to detail. There was a firepit bbq too (charcoal and wood provided) and sitting by the fire of an evening and cook our evening meal was just great! The location is very convenient for Hereford and Hay-on-Wye as well as the river and countryside walks but once you've seen the site you would want to make the most of it. We thoroughly recommend it and hope to be back ourselves.

Bluebell
An amazing glamping experience. Homestead is a great countryside hideaway that's run so well by Heather and Nick. They provide everything you need for a great outdoor experience - firepit, wood/charcoal, super comfy bed, hot showers, compost toilet emptied regularly, fitted kitchen and even a picnic hamper that you could take to the many riverside locations locally. We stayed in ‘Bluebell’ which was beautifully decorated and tucked away in the corner of the field. The animals onsite, butterflies in the meadow, bats and swifts flying overhead make this a nature lovers happy place. We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 nights spend there and wish Heather and Nick all the very best for many seasons to come.

This was our first ever Glamping experience, we both throughly enjoyed our stay and the views that we were surrounded by were stunning. Loved all the animals that were around on the property too. Nick & Heather on arrival provided a warm and friendly welcoming to Homestead Glamping, also little touches that you may need during your stay! We arrived a little late on our check in however Nick and Heather were happy to accommodate us on our arrival showing us around the site. We stayed in ‘Bluebell’ tent which was beautifully decorated and homely. The added bonus of having your own shower, toilet and own kitchen area adds to the feel of luxurious glamping experience. Facilities were very clean and well organised. Would highly recommend.

This was my first ever Glamping experience and I am so glad I got to spend it in the tranquil surroundings at Homestead! Not only do the owners, Nick & Heather provide all the little touches that you may need during your stay, they also offer such a warm and friendly face welcoming you to Homestead Glamping which definitely makes you wish you were staying for longer! We arrived a little late on our check in however Nick and Heather were happy to accommodate us on our arrival showing us around the site. We stayed in bell tent ‘Bluebell’ which was beautifully decorated and homely. The added bonus of having your own shower, toilet and own kitchen area adds to the feel of luxurious glamping experience. The roosters early wake up call and sounds of galloping horses is what really makes the experience at Homestead unique. We thoroughly enjoyed our couple of nights spent at Homestead and can only hope many other guests get to discover this gem!

This is such a tranquil location, with stunning views. I was almost tempted not to write a review to keep it a secret! The meadow is perfectly flat and Nick has thought of everything to make this wild camping experience go smoothly. Very clean facilities and extremely well organised. Highly recommended.

From the host
Situated in the depths of rural Herefordshire countryside, in the hamlet of Norton Wood, Homestead Glamping has lovely views of the far reaching Welsh hills. This is an excellent walking and cycling area with many marked out paths and is located on the Black and White Trail which leads through pretty villages and beautiful landscape. The local area has nature reserves and conservation fields, and this cider-growing region is home to many stunning orchards. Nearby villages have many pubs and restaurants and the unique book town of Hay-on-Wye which also hosts the famous Hay festival in May is only 30 minutes away. The beautiful River Wye is notorious for Barbel, Chubb,Trout and Salmon. Carp and course fishing lakes are close by and offer day ticket fishing facilities. The Cathedral city of Hereford, on the border between England and Wales is a treasure trove of historic buildings and artefacts. The Cathedral holds the Mappa Mundi and also has one of the four surviving copies of the 1217 version of the Magna Carta and if that isn't enough the Cathedral houses the largest Chained Library in the world and only 12 miles approx from the Glamping site.
Nearby attractions

The surrounding area is rich with scenic walks, not least the ridge at The Cat's Back and the famous Offa's Dyke path. For the more intrepid, the Wye Valley has some great kayaking and canoeing trails. The historic cathedral city of Hereford is around 12 miles from Newhouse Farm while the Welsh border town of Brecon and the bibliophiles' haven of Hay-on-Wye are a mere 30 mins drive away. For pony treks try Brwyngwyn Riding Centre in the beautiful hills just above Hay-on-Wye. (01497 851 669; one hour hacks kids/adults £17/20). Cycle mapped routes in the stunning Black Mountains and Brecon beacons with Black Mountain Activities (01497 847897; half a day/full day hire £20/30).

Food and drink

The Stagg Inn (01544 230221) 15 minutes’ drive from Newhouse Farm offers very fine dining. The other side of Hay, The Griffin at Felin Fach (01874 620111) is lauded by top newspaper critics and is best visited for lunch for its set menu. Hereford, Hay-on-Wye and the surrounding area have a mass of eating options to suit all budgets.
