21st-century shepherd's hut glamping – stargaze from your bed, bathe in a Scandinavian hot tub and cook pizzas in a wood-fired oven

Sheep? They’re so last year. The world of wool has moved on. It’s all about alpacas now. Come to this eight-acre smallholding in rural Hampshire and you’ll see the two species grazing side by side. How fitting it seems, then, that just as livestock has gone up-market so too has the traditional shepherd’s abode. For here, edging the vast green swathe of Bentley Wood, you’ll find a modern shepherd’s hut that even top hotels will envy.

Set at the end of a private gravel track, with views across a paddock to the woods beyond, this wood-clad, curved-roofed wonder is a masterpiece of design. Sympathetic to it’s surroundings, the hut is full of sheep-like tradition – a split stable door, cast-iron wheels and a log-burning stove – but pairs it all with alpaca-esque modernism – there’s a powerful en suite shower, mains electricity and water, plus a giant curved window above your bed so that you can stargaze all night long. The large double bed folds back into the end wall, providing extra space during the day, while, outside, designer furniture and decking awaits. The real treat? A luxurious Scandinavian hot tub, where you can simmer away with a glass of bubbly.

While headline features like the hot tub or the hut’s wood-fired pizza oven certainly stand out, the real beauty of Bentley’s Frenchmoor is the smaller touches and the acute attention to detail. The three Ts are provided – towels, toiletries and Twinings tea – and, along with a local map, there are books, games and a radio. A complimentary breakfast hamper lies in wait for your arrival – think Dorset cereals and artisan bread – and a beautiful Victorian wooden wheelbarrow sits in the car park to help you take your luggage from car to hut. Combine that with friendly owners Peter and Georgie, who are happy to recommend a local pub or point you in the direction of a scenic footpath, and you’ve everything you need.

The first footpath you should take, in fact, is across and into Bentley Wood itself, a 1,700-acre space originally owned by Lady Colman of Colman’s Mustard and a delightful place for a stroll (particularly in bluebell blooming spring). There are a handful of country estates nearby, too, as well as the historic cathedral towns of Salisbury and Winchester and the, too often overlooked, Romsey, a the beautiful medieval market town clustered around a magnificent Norman Abbey.

Bentley's Shepherds Hut
Absolutely Wonderful
Bentley's Shepherd's Hut Glamping is all you want it to be and more. The setting is private, quiet and tranquil. The Hut itself is gorgeous, and very clever with its space and the décor is stunning, makes you feel cosy as soon as you walk in the door. It is lovely looking out to the woods and seeing sheep and alpacas in the field. The hosts are super lovely too - had everything prepared for us and even heated up the outdoor hot tub for our arrival. Would certainly recommend it for a getaway, you won't be disappointed. Can also speak highly of the scones!

Bentley's Shepherds Hut
We loved our stay at Bentleys Frenchmoor! Our hosts were welcoming and the accommodation, a stunning shepherd's hut was amazing, everything you need is provided. Such a beautiful and peaceful place, with woodland walks and Alpacas and sheep, feeding the Alpacas was a great treat. We enjoyed the woodfired hot tub, bbq and making and cooking our own pizzas in the pizza oven was a great experience. A relaxing few days away from it all, pure bliss. We will definitely return!

Bentley's Shepherds Hut
Perfect place for relaxation
Peace and tranquility, whilst having a bit of luxury too. Tucked away on its own with views across the paddock and woods beyond we watched the local wildlife including buzzards and swallows and got away from it all, often whilst in the wood fired hottub! The shepherd's hut has all that you need, a quality shower, electric hob (for the bacon sarnie) and fridge to keep the beer and Prosecco cold. A comfortable bed too with a glass roof for stargazing. All whilst having three alpacas, some sheep and a horse for company. A truly lovely spot to relax and unwind, thoroughly recommended.

Bentley's Shepherds Hut
Rest and relaxation guaranteed
What an idyllic place to stay. Your own field, surrounded by 3 lovely alpacas (who make no noise) plenty of sheep (who baa when being fed) and a horse (who whinnies as soon as he see's Peter). Rest, relaxation, peace, quiet and a hot tub to boot. Plenty of places to explore locally, if you can drag yourself away from the Prosecco and your latest book. The Shepherds Hut is very well equipped - to a high standard, even the kitchen, which is often sadly lacking in the utensil department. Highly recommend and I do mean *highly.

A luxury shepherd’s hut “in a field of your own” Peter and Georgie’s 8 acre smallholding adjacent to the 1,700 acre Bentley Wood in West Tytherley is the most idyllic retreat for your stay – and they want to share its beauty and tranquillity with you. We wanted a name that represented the local area. Our smallholding is adjacent to part of the Bentley Wood – gifted into trust by Lady Colman (Colman’s Mustard) hence the name “Bentley’s” was born The beautifully hand crafted hut which sits on cast iron wheels and made by Blackdown (the finest manufacturer), is clad in feather edged oak, insulated with sheep’s wool, features hand crafted oak units and fittings, together with the magical pull-down double bed and en-suite shower. In case of a chill, the hut also has a log burner to keep you snug and warm. As if that is not enough, the stunning curved glass ceiling above the bed enables you can continue star-gazing long into the night, wrapped up in your Hungarian goose down duvet. In the summer why not star gaze whilst relaxing in the wood-fired hot tub with a bottle of prosecco! Dawning in a field of your own with birdsong, our three lovely alpacas (and the sheep) the choice of activities beckons.. Or if you prefer, relax in the paddock and take it easy. The choice is yours.
Nearby attractions
Local walking is a treat and, if you purchase a permit, the fly fishing in the River Test is some of the best in Europe. There are several manor houses and country estates nearby: The National Trust-owned Mottisfont Abbey is one of the closest (8 miles); set beside the Test it houses a good museum and regularly changing exhibits, along with a walled rose garden and a pleasant river-side walking route. It’s 9 miles to Broadlands (01794 505080) in Romsey and 14 to Wilton, home to the 18th Earl of Pembroke. Built on the site of a 9th century nunnery, Wilton House (01722 746714) is a wonderfully historic spot, with some 21 acres of landscaped gardens and parklands to explore beside the River Nadder. For something different, animal lovers will adore The Hawk Conservancy Trust (1264 773850), a feeding station and reserve where you can witness some of the most spectacular flying displays in the UK, as well as meeting owls and other birds.
Food and drink

For a luxurious head start, pre-order food hampers directly from the glamping site. BBQ packs include locally produced burgers and sausages and fresh brioche buns; all-day breakfast packs include the site’s own free range eggs, locally produced bacon and sausages, fresh tomatoes and local mushrooms; and you can also order cream tea packs, which include 2 locally produced scones, strawberry jam and Devon clotted cream. Elsewhere, head to picturesque Stockbridge High Street (8 miles), where there are plenty of good shops and eateries to browse. The Greyhound pub (01264 810833) and Woodfire Pizza (01264 810248) are both great spots for food and there are plenty of decent coffee shops. Just beyond, the Peat Spade (01264 810612) is also excellent. If you’re in Salisbury, our pick is Charter 1227, while, in medieval Romsey, The Three Tuns (01794 512639) is the place to go.
