Secluded almost wild camping spots in an ancient woodland in the Cotswolds

There’s not much to separate the experience you’ll have at Voltaire’s Wood from wild camping – but the things that exist are important. Firstly there’s the friendly permission of the owners. Secondly, there’s water and logs supplied and, finally, there’s a compost loo on site. This dog-friendly, wild woodland campsite in the Cotswolds offers five, private sites in a 120-acre wood. Book one, start your campfire, and settle in for a weekend surrounded by nature.

The pitches (or private campsites) here are set in clearings between trees, far enough apart that you may not see anyone from outside your group for the duration of your stay. Each is at least a five-minute walk from the car park and – apart from a couple which can accommodate a campervan or two – are accessible with a 4x4 only. If you don’t have one, fear not, your hosts can ferry your gear to and fro but those who will enjoy this place the most are probably self sufficient anyway. They’ll be the type to pack light and get the flint striker out to have the fire going in minutes. For this, there’s a fire pit at each site.

Each pitch also has a rain shelter, benches and access to a compost loo. Water is supplied in 20-litre containers and replenished daily – or on demand. This is properly off-grid camping in the woods and the delight is in the isolation of it all. Your closest neighbours are woodland birds and creatures and you might find yourself reluctant to leave them for the duration of your stay. Should you want or need to, however,  it’s less than a mile to the nearest pub and less than two to the nearest town. This is the Cotswolds so there’s plenty to see and do that’s perfectly civilised and all rather lovely but if you want to go wild in the Cotswolds, stay right here.

Charcoal Kiln: The Off Roader
Into the woods
We had a truly wonderful time. The site is very well maintained and felt remote and exclusive. Bo was an excellent host, and we wanted nothing.

Camping in the woods
This is a beautiful woodland campsite that is accessible to campervans. The pitches are so far apart that we didn’t see another tent or van all weekend. You feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but the pub is only a 20 minute walk away! Ev and her team were very helpful throughout our stay.

Rustic, back to nature camping
We had a great weekend camping in the woods, I loved the "almost wild" feel as a wild camper myself. Great for getting away from it all, brilliant for dogs who can be off lead and roam as dogs should. Our host Chris was really accommodating, allowing us to switch pitch when we realised my disabled dog would struggle to access the one we originally booked. One small thing that could have been improved was to include some kindling to light the fire, the logs were damp and although we managed to light a fire both nights, I did have to cheat a little! I will definitely be back!

Cotswold Woodland Camping
Wow! What an amazing experience- Chris our host was really friendly welcoming us and making sure we had the right pitch for our needs. Our stay was amazing - tucked away in the woods away from everything. It was a great adventure and fun to go back to basis for us with our 2 year old daughter and golden retriever. Would highly recommend to anyone!!

Individual pitches set 120 acres of broadleaf woodland. Pitches are well separated so you feel you have the woods to yourself. Great for a relaxing weekend next to the campfire.

Disappear into the woods. Come and stay in one of our five camps within the 120 acres of Cotswolds woodlands - Voltaire's Wood - your own private base to explore or just watch the world go by. Firewood and spring water delivered daily. Benches around a fire pit. A dining table and a bush crafter's den - great for hiding from the rain. Each camp is unique, set deep in the woods down its own track in several acres of space. Your nearest neighbours, other than your camping companions, will be deer and owls. Given the unique location of our sites, they are best suited to 4x4 vehicles because of the forest tracks leading to the sites. Selected summer dates now available to book. Prices are set for a group of four people. For larger or smaller groups, or other requirements, please do get in touch first.
Nearby attractions

If the 120 acres of woodland does not contain enough trees to keep you entertained, head for Westonbirt and The National Arboretum, which is just eight miles away. This is the Cotswolds, so there are plenty of picturesque villages to explore too on walks, bike rides and scenic drives. A traffic-free route from nearby Nailsworth uses the route of the old Midland Railway to take you five miles to Stonehouse. Minchinhampton Common and Rodborough Common are nearby National Trust lands with scenic views of the Cotswold’s rolling scenery, Stroud and the Severn Vale. They are home to ancient earthworks, wild flowers and grasslands.

Food and drink

The Weighbridge Inn is the closest pub to site (less than a mile) and if you fancy a meal out, don’t miss their two-in-one pies which combine a pastry-topped pie with a healthy dose of cauliflower cheese! The Bell Inn at Avening is also nearby, just over a mile away in the village of Avening. A little further in the other direction, is the town of Nailsworth where you will find plenty of eateries and shops for campsite supplies too. Don’t miss Hobbs House Bakery or the fancy William’s Food Hall where there’s a deli counter and fishmongers as well as a seafood restaurant.
