Want to go glamping near the western end of Hadrian’s Wall Path? The Garrison Shepherd’s Huts are where you should be headed. These self-contained huts are the closest glamping accommodation to the start of the national trail in Bowness-on-Solway. They're also parked up on the site of a Roman fort that once marked the northern boundary to the Roman Empire. In short, there's nowhere more appropriate to spend a night or two if you’re exploring Hadrian’s Wall and the heritage of the area.
There are four different huts at this Hipcamp, all situated in a former farm courtyard, in the very middle of the village. Each of them offers self-contained accommodation for up to three people. Book a stay and you don’t have to worry about bringing much at all. Beds are made, towels provided, and each has its own en-suite shower and loo as well as a simple kitchenette. Although the facilities are all there to self cater, you may not need to use it; as the on-site Garrison Bistro serves up food at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Each hut has a double bed with a single bunk above—so they're best suited to a couple, a family of three, or perhaps two friends about to tackle the walk or cycle across the country, west to east. But this is also a great stopping off point for people travelling north to south, as Bowness-on-Solway is very much a border village. Stand on the river bank and you are looking across the Solway Firth to Scotland. Gretna Green is 20 miles away from here, just a little further than Carlisle with its castle, cathedral, and riverside parks. All worthy places to visit.
