Safari tents in North Essex, close to the Suffolk border, with a fishing lake nearby.

If you’re angling for a peaceful glamping trip with the family, in spacious, luxuriously furnished accommodation next to a beautiful fishing lake, look no further than North Essex’s Woodchests Glamping. The three sizeable ensuite safari tents are positioned in an open clearing, backed by woodland and a short stroll from the water’s edge where guests can enjoy a secluded day out catching carp with the kids.

The open-plan safari tents come packed with more than just your creature comforts. There’s a fully-equipped solar-powered kitchen, complete with all crockery, cutlery, and utensils, a master bedroom with king size bed, a second bedroom with bunk beds, and the kids will love climbing up to the cabin bed – like a cubby-hole in the wall and the perfect, private den. This hipcamp is off-grid but you’ll still have access to your own private shower room, with a hot shower and a separate eco-friendly toilet.

Raise the canvas entrance for a view out onto the countryside, where you can sit out on the veranda with a glass of wine – your hosts helpfully confirm that the tent’s fridge can fit up to 12 bottles of the good stuff. The stunning views continue when you make your way down to the secluded lake, a huge expanse of water stocked with carp, pike, tech, bream, and hybrids. All fish must be returned to the water and at least one experienced angler should be in your group, making this a great chance to teach the little ones how to catch.

Walking boots are essential here, with the hipcamp’s positioning next to the Suffolk border ensuring plenty of countryside walks and flat cycle routes. Bring your bikes and take a trip out to the nearby village of Castle Hedingham, where you can admire its titular castle – England’s best-preserved Norman keep – and explore its historical grounds. Or you can drive out to the idyllic market town of Sudbury or Roman Colchester, both of which provide plenty of shops to peruse and a variety of coffee shops, pubs, and restaurants.

Beautiful
Clare is a fabulous host & helpful. Loved our glamping safari tent! Very comfortable, spotless and spacious. We all enjoyed the peaceful surroundings with gorgeous views. There's a gas stove & heater, also outdoor pizza oven with logs provided, perfect for making s'mores. It has a private bathroom at the back with nice shower & good water pressure. Definitely recommend!

Woodchests is part of a family run farming business and is located at Hunts Hall just outside the village of Pebmarsh in North Essex, close to the Suffolk border between the Colne and Stour Valleys. The wooden framed Safari tents have been placed in a quiet spot next to a mature woodland between the farm and the 19 acre fishing lake. The two acre site is being transformed by planting the site with native trees and hedgerows to allow it to become a harmonious addition to the woodland ensuring that our guests are surrounded by the countryside you expect from a rural get away. Hedingham Castle is less than a 15-minute drive away or, if you're feeling fit, a 30-minute flat cycle. Guests can visit its historic gardens and Keep of Hedingham, with there being a number of walks that take you through its beautiful estate. Bring a picnic if the weather's warm, or get your food and drink from the Keep Tea Room. The kids will love Colchester Zoo, less than a 30-minute drive away and home to over 160 species of animal across its massive 60 acres. There are a variety of activities to take part in here, too, from hand-feeding the giraffes, to holding creepy crawlies in the Discovery Den, to letting the little ones enjoy one of the various outdoor play areas. Or you can take a day trip to Colchester Castle, the oldest Normal Keep in Europe, steeped in history and boasting interactive displays, star exhibits, and a beautiful surrounding park.

Food and drink

The King's Head is only a 20-minute walk away in the small village of Pebmarsh, a 15th-century former coaching inn that is owned by its local community. As such, this is a pub that the locals are proud of, positioned along a pretty ride with thatched roof cottages and a stroll away from the church. There's outdoor seating in its large patio area, and classic pub grub is also served along with a Sunday roast. Five Bells is another popular local less than a five-minute drive from your hipcamp, a 16th-century free house in the village of Colne Engaine that provides stunning views across the Colne Valley from its terrace. Traditional pub food is also served here, with it also boasting a separate restaurant, and it also hosts live music events.
