Treehouses on the edge of Dorset’s Blue Pool

The Blue Pool is a well-known but low-key and rather lovely tourist attraction in Dorset. People have been coming here since 1935 to visit the tea rooms and walk woodland paths around the pool’s impossibly turquoise waters. The important difference is that, these days, you don’t have to go home. A pair of treehouses built in and around the pine trees on the water’s edge now offer rustic accommodation at this truly special site. Once the day visitors have left, overnight glampers get the whole place—all 20 acres—to themselves.

There’s no better time to spot the resident wildlife than when everyone else has gone home. You’re almost guaranteed to see sika deer and squirrels and, if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a peregrine falcon or hear the haunting sound of a nightjar. The treehouses are named after these two birds: Choose Peregrine to sleep up to four, Nightjar if you’re coming with a significant other. Both were handcrafted using timber sourced within the estate and are completely unique. Each has its own private facilities; at Peregrine there’s a toilet at the living space level and a kitchen corner with kettle and sink inside. A refreshing open-air shower is underneath the cabin. Over at Nightjar the facilities are grounded and a short walk away from the treehouse, which is really a bedroom at canopy level with a living tree trunk right through the middle. For both, you must bring your own bedding.

Both treehouses have decks outside, so you can enjoy your lofty viewpoint, and both have a firepit area and seating too. The treehouses, the nearby summer-only camping site, and The Blue Pool itself are all part of the Furzebrook Estate. It’s privately owned and located on the Isle of Purbeck, a couple of miles from Corfe Castle and not more than 20 minutes from most of the places you’ll want to visit: Studland Bay, Swanage, Kimmeridge Bay, Lulworth Cove, and Durdle Door.

Peregrine - Hand Built Treehouse
Positives: - Friendly and helpful staff - A beautiful setting - A perhaps unique opportunity to have a nature reserve to yourself once it has closed to the public for the day Negatives: - The Peregrine treehouse is located only a short distance from one of the main footpaths. Therefore, from 9am to 5pm there is a steady stream of people gawping and taking photos of you. What’s more, whilst there are ‘Private’ signs on the perimeter, no-one pays any attention to them so lots of people come up to the treehouse and on a couple of occasions tried to enter the treehouse whilst we were inside. The lack of privacy is particularly problematic as the shower is outside. Unfortunately, it got so bad that we left a day early. The other treehouse appears to be much further away from the footpath so there may not be the same issue. - There is a big gap between the front door and the frame which allowed numerous mice to enter during the night. Bring some rags to stuff into all the gaps. - I originally made the booking in the wrong week. Even though I noticed and remedied the error immediately, I was charged a 50% cancellation fee to cancel and rebook. My fault, yes, but it’s still a little harsh and it meant that I paid £240/night. In fact, as we left a day early, it ended up costing £360/night. - the Peregrine treehouse is supposed to be for up to 4 people. There were only 2 of us and we struggled as it’s very cramped. If you’re planning to accommodate 4 people then beware.

A special and magical experience!
Staying in this beautiful little treehouse at The Blue Pool in Dorset was just about one of the most magical experiences we have ever had! Surrounded by woodland, animals (including visits from the local peacocks at night), nature and the most stunning scenery, we felt so privileged so stay here. We had out of hours access to the lake when everyone else had gone home (staff included) and spent evenings by ourselves watching the sunset over the glassy blue lake, cooking by the fire, cosying up in the comfy, and charming treehouse, watching the stars and enjoying every moment. In the day between 10am -5:30pm the walks and pools are open to the public, but it never got too busy and you still feel very secluded and nice and private. We also received quick replies from the team, and they were so happy and friendly and accommodating. We couldn’t recommend this stay more, anyone who visits is in for such a treat!

What an experience! The photos and description don’t do this place justice, my family and I had the most amazing 2 night stay with memories made we shall never forget. The treehouse itself is just perfect for a family, surprisingly spacious and well kitted out with all the essentials, we even braved the outdoor shower! But this spot is all about the location, the Blue Pool reserve is just stunning, great cafe and play area a bonus too. At dusk we sat around the pool watching for wildlife, lucked out with spotting an owl and some bats! Highly recommend, thanks to all the staff who were all so friendly and welcoming too.

Nightjar- Private Treehouse Getaway
Stunning woodland heath stay
Almost don't want to leave a review, to keep this gem to ourselves! A gorgeous, simple, clean, warm little treehouse set privately in the most stunning woods. There is a small cafe and shop at the Nature Reserve, and the treehouse is only a 3 minute walk away but completely hidden and private. After hours there is time to explore the nature reserve, where deer and peacocks roam, and blue pool - you have it all to yourself (or shared only with visitors to the 1 other treehouse)! The loo and hot outdoor shower (another highlight!) is down a little path, but very close. We will definitely be back.

We are delighted to announce that from May 2023 The Blue Pool Nature Reserve & Tearooms will be offering Blue Pool Camping on The Furzebrook Estate in one of our Boutique Bell Tents or for something completely different why not consider a treehouse! A small and exclusive site has been allocated within the grounds of the Furzebrook Estate. This five acre site will consist of only ten fixed bell tents and two treehouses for that true ‘back to nature’ experience. We look forward to welcoming you to this new and beautiful site. Come and explore nature, expect wonderful birdlife, rabbits and free roaming Sika Deer in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Nearby attractions

Obviously you don’t have to go far to see one of Dorset’s tourist attractions as you are camping within The Blue Pool. Access to the site is included with your stay. There are woodland walks and viewpoints and occasional events too. You can access parts of the wider Furzebrook Estate, its heathland and woodland, and the surrounding countryside by striking out on local footpaths including The Purbeck Way which passes right by and provides a route to Corfe Castle, about a 20-minute walk away. It’s just over five minutes in the car. RSPB Arne, Dorset Adventure Park, the Swanage Railway and Monkey World are all within 15 minutes’ drive of here – and then there’s the Jurassic Coast which you are well-placed to explore. Studland Bay marks this UNESCO World Heritage site’s eastern end and is 20 minutes’ drive. So too are Kimmeridge Bay where fossils are frequently found, the sheltered waters of Lulworth Cove and the chalk bridge and stacks at Durdle Door.

Nearby attractions

The Blue Pool Tea Room and Coffee Shop is the obvious choice for breakfast, lunch or coffee and cake as it’s on site and open from 9.30am everyday serving a menu featuring local produce. Once the site is closed though, you might want to head elsewhere for your dinner. There’s The Halfway Inn, two miles away, which serves a menu of pub grub including options for vegetarians, vegans and kids. Wareham is under four miles from site and has plenty of good options too – as well as shops and supermarkets for stocking up at. Perhaps try The Quay Inn for riverside dining.
