Bell tents and camping with alpacas near Dorset’s Jurassic Coast

Eco-friendly, animal-friendly and people-friendly, Flowerdew Farm offers camping and bell tents on a small site just inland of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. There’s a welcoming host, a resident artist, a small herd of alpacas and a couple of pygmy goats. As they graze in the paddock next to the campsite it’s hard not to fall for the charms of these friendly creatures. Or indeed for the whole experience at Flowerdew Farm. It’s a place that’s been handbuilt with real care for the land, the community and, of course, visiting campers. Plus, it’s only half a mile to a great local pub, a mile to the nearest farm shop and two miles to the closest beach.

Campers are greeted at the gate by host, Claire, who shows you where to park your car and where your pitch is in the car-free camping field. She’ll point out the site’s simple facilities – though her hand-painted signs do that too. There’s a portable toilet, a rustic but lovely timber and tin hot-water shower and an open-air wash-up station. There’s also an undercover rest area in The Stables with seating and a communal-use fridge freezer. It’s occasionally used by some of the community groups who visit the farm for wellness or willow-weaving workshops (ask Claire in advance to find out when these take place). The site is home to a maximum of 15 tents at a time with four bell tents for hire as well. Three are unfurnished, one comes with everything you need for your stay.

This is a sociable site; the kind of place where you get to know your neighbours and your host. Don’t be surprised if an impromptu wellie-wanging competition or craft session kicks off. It’s all part of the charm of Flowerdew Farm. But there’s plenty to charm you off site too: the 16th-century pub down the road, the surrounding scenery of the peaceful Bride Valley and the beaches of the Jurassic Coast. Here, you are just about midway between Weymouth and Lyme Regis, a great base from which to explore all of West Dorset.

We had an incredible time at the farm staying in one of the bell tents, which was perfect for a group of four. Claire was wonderful and so helpful, always giving brilliant recommendations for the surrounding area. This was our second time staying at the campsite and we can't wait to go back next year.

Grass Pitch
A lovely campsite. Our second time here, like the upgrade for the " chill out area". Unfortunately we had to abandon camp early due to bad weather, but we will be back.

Flowerdew Farm was awesome! We loved our few days camping there over half term - it was the perfect spot. Claire is a fantastic host, super helpful and welcoming, and the whole atmosphere of the site is really relaxed and friendly. Such an ideal spot for family camping, we’d definitely go back!

Flowerdew Farm is a eco friendly two acre working alpaca and goat smallholding, glamping and camping wellness site. Located in an area of outstanding natural beauty on West Dorset’s stunning Jurassic coast, surrounded by stunning views. Perfect for those that want to experience sleeping next to our alpacas and goats; go explore the beautiful Dorset beaches; of for those that want to adventure off on a hike. We also offer animal experiences for those that want to meet our animals.
Nearby attractions

Flowerdew Farm offers Alpaca Meet & Greet sessions for campers, which should be booked in advance (at an extra cost). It’s a lovely and therapeutic way to spend time on the farm, all supervised by host Claire and/or her friendly volunteers. You can head out on walks from the campsite on country lanes and footpaths – including towards the coast which is just a couple of miles away. West Bexington is the closest beach, just beyond the village of Swyre. This is also where you can hop aboard a Jurassic Coaster, a handy bus service that runs up and down the length of the coast. Use it to travel west to the village of Burton Bradstock (three miles), West Bay (six miles), inland to the market town of Bridport (six miles) or even all the way to Lyme Regis (16 miles). West Bay is the closest beach that’s good for swimming, Lyme Regis is a great place for fossil hunting and there are plenty of other beaches and coastal highlights along the way. In the other direction, you skirt Chesil Beach all the way to Weymouth (14 miles). There’s lots of family fun there. Other attractions in the near area include Vurlands Family Farm (one mile), Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens and Abbotsbury Swannery (five miles).

Food and drink

Flowerdew Farm is only half a mile from Puncknowle village where you’ll find the charming thatched 16th-century pub, The Crown Inn. The pub is a sociable place with a beer garden that serves food and sometimes hosts food trucks, quiz nights and local music. For lunch out overlooking the sea, head for The Hive Beach Cafe down at Hive Beach (three miles) which offers fresh fish and seafood on its menus. There’s a pub, The Three Horseshoes, which does good food in the pretty village of Burton Bradstock too (also three miles). For food to cook at the campsite or for picnics, head to Modbury Farm Shop, just a mile away from the campsite. Burton Bradstock has a small convenience store and for more than that, there’s Bridport (six miles). Market day there is Wednesday and there’s a good range of independent shops and small supermarkets too.
